Numerical Simulation of 2-D Estuaries and Coast by Multi-Domain and the Interpolating Matrix Method (Multi-Domain과 행렬 보간법을 이용한 강 하구와 연안의 2차원 수치해석)

  • This paper presents a two-dimensional horizontal implicit model to general circulation in estuaries and coastal seas. The model is developed in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates system, using the Interpolating Matrix Method (IMM), in combination with a technique of multi-domain. In the propose model, the Saint-Venant equations are solved by a splitting-up technique, in the successive steps; convection, diffusion and wave propagation. The ability of the proposed model to deal with full scale nature is illustrated by the interpretation of a dye-tracing experiment in the Gironde estuary.

Explicit Matrix Expressions of Progressive Iterative Approximation

  • Just by adjusting the control points iteratively, progressive iterative approximation (PIA) presents an intuitive and straightforward scheme such that the resulting limit curve (surface) can interpolate the original data points. In order to obtain more flexibility, adjusting only a subset of the control points, a new method called local progressive iterative approximation (LPIA) has also been proposed. But to this day, there are two problems about PIA and LPIA: (1) Only an approximation process is discussed, but the accurate convergence curves (surfaces) are not given. (2) In order to obtain an interpolating curve (surface) with high accuracy, recursion computations are needed time after time, which result in a large workload. To overcome these limitations, this paper gives an explicit matrix expression of the control points of the limit curve (surface) by the PIA or LPIA method, and proves that the column vector consisting of the control points of the PIA's limit curve (or surface) can be obtained by multiplying the column vector consisting of the original data points on the left by the inverse matrix of the collocation matrix (or the Kronecker product of the collocation matrices in two direction) of the blending basis at the parametric values chosen by the original data points. Analogously, the control points of the LPIA's limit curve (or surface) can also be calculated by one-step. Furthermore, the $G^1$ joining conditions between two adjacent limit curves obtained from two neighboring data points sets are derived. Finally, a simple LPIA method is given to make the given tangential conditions at the endpoints can be satisfied by the limit curve.

  • Optimal layer sequencing of a multi-layered acoustical foam is solved to maximize its sound transmission loss. A foam consisting of air and poroelastic layers can be optimized when a limited amount of a poroelastic material is allowed. By formulating the sound transmission loss maximization problem as a one dimensional topology optimization problem, optimal layer sequencing and thickness were systematically found for several frequencies. For optimization, the transmission losses of air and poroelastic layers were calculated by the transfer matrix derived from Biot's theory. By interpolating five intrinsic parameters among several poroelastic material parameters, dear air-poroelastic layer distributions were obtained; no filtering or post-processing was necessary. The optimized foam layouts by the proposed method were shown to differ depending on the frequency of interest.

  • A gain-scheduled autopilot design for a bank-to-turn (BTT) missile is developed by using the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) optimization technique and a state-space lineal interpolation method. The missile dynamics are brought to a quasilinear parameter varying (quasi-LPV) form. Robust linear control design method is used to obtain state feedback controllers for the LPV systems with exogenous disturbances at the frozen values of the scheduling parameters. Two gam-scheduled controllers for the pitch axis and the yaw/roll axis are constructed by linearly interpolating the robust state-feedback gains. The designed controller is applied to a nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulations.

  • A simple and efficient method is presented for the dynamics of interconnected flexible beams having large rigid body rotations. A simple mass matrix is obtained by interpolating the displacements in the global inertia frame, and the elastic force is also simply computed by using linear finite element technique with the moving frame attached to the beam. For the beams connected by revolute joints, kinematic constraints and relative rotations between the beans are not required and the equations of motions are time integrated by a simple ODE technique. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present technique.
