  • The proliferation of the internet and electronic commerce has given the manufacturers the opportunity of direct marketing. This study analyzes the decision of manufacturers regarding whether to sell the products through independent sales company or to sell the products to the consumer directly. To do this, a new demand function is proposed and sub and super games are modeled and analyzed based on the demand function. By analyzing the Nash equilibria, it is shown that the manufacturers' decision of direct or indirect marketing not only depends on the competitiveness between the products but the absolute and relative marketing capabilities of the manufacturers. It is also shown that, in some cases, the manufactures have incentive to rise the competitiveness between the products to maximize the channel profit.

  • Purpose: While empirical importance of dimensionality of perceived value is widely accepted, our understanding of experiential value dimensions in other retail channels and other cultures has not been explicitly tested. This study attempted to determine if the dimensions of experiential value scale (EVS) by Mathwick, Malhotra, and Rigdon (2001) identified in US catalog and Internet contexts could be applied in other international markets (South Korea) and in other retail channels (department store versus Internet shopping mall). Methodology/Approach: Two data sets, one from 220 department store shoppers and the other from 359 Internet shopping mall shoppers, were analyzed. Findings: Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed four different EVS dimensions by retail channels. Overall, entertainment and intrinsic enjoyment values were found to be more important in department store while economic and efficiency value dimensions were interpreted critical in Internet shopping mall context. Visual appeal aspect constitutes distinct value dimension in two channels. Practical Implications: One separate dimension of time efficiency in Internet shopping mall suggests that more efficient web design and functions that can save time and promote convenience are needed to better accommodate their customers. Internet has heavily relied on traditional attributes, such as factual information, price comparability, and brand name reliance. However, this study suggests that Internet shopping mall retailer should offer visual diversion and stimulation just as brick and mortar shopping malls do. Originality /Value of Paper: Although the research findings must be viewed as tentative because the results are from one country, they provide a rich basis for further understanding the dimensions of experiential value in other international markets and other retail channels. • As a major obstacle to active online purchase at the level of consumer in China, distrust is raised in this study. Most of previous studies showed that trust is a major variable to cause a relational unity between company and consumer, on the other hand, this study attempts to show that according to the two dimensional point of view regarding trust each dimension of both trust and distrust distinctly contributes to marketing achievement. Interaction, perceived popularity, information usefulness, perceived security risk and perceived dealing risk were created as preceding variable, trust and distrust were constituted as parameter and relation absorption and purchase intention as consequential variable. These variables were analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM) in LISREL 8.3 program. The results for this study are as follows. First, relation between exchange actors in marketing is divided into two concepts of trust and distrust differently from the previous studies. On the assumption that trust and distrust might exist simultaneously and they would distinctly have an influence on marketing consequency such as relation absorption and repurchase intention, it is identified that trust and distrust are a different dimension in online context. Second, the formative factor of online trust-distrust is identified and it is shown what relationship between internet shopping mall and relation absorption and foregoing purchase intention resulting from online trust-distrust exists. Third, it is shown that in online context the formative factor of online trust-distrust is distinctly contributed to relation absorption and repurchase intention. It is suggested that trust needs to be managed two-dimensionally separating from trust and distrust. Fourth, it is shown that both trust and distrust factor in terms of relation absorption and repurchase intention of consumer in internet shopping mall are significant variables. Trust is linked with repurchase intention through relation absorption, however, distrust is not directly linked with repurchase intention through relation absorption. Thus, the ripple effect of distrust appears to be much higher than that of trust.

As the sites on line were disappeared frequently, all the monitored sites were selected on April 25, 2003. 3 disciplined personnels analyzed the contents of the selected sites by using self-developed monitoring format. The results are as follows. Most of sites were administered by the marketing companies and only 8% by public institutions, associations and school. Especially, most of the contents of the sites by marketing companies were advertisement about their goods instead of nutrition information. Only 42.6% of sites indicated the sources of nutrition information. Only 10.3% of site administrators responded about on-line questions quickly within 1 day. Moreover, 46% of sites were not conformed their answering periods. On the other hand, 94.8% of sites offered more than 1 feedback methods. Monitors checked purposes offering on-line informations plurally. Leading purpose was for advertising and marketing their goods(59.5%) and 47% of them were opened for offering food and nutrition information. They offered various informations at the same time. More than half of the sites had the menus for food and nutrition information and connected sites, but the other half of them only advertised their own goods. Positive sides from monitored informations were as follows : 'communicating informations easily' (8.7%) / 'definite informations for daily living' (7.2%) / 'beneficial informations for nutritional management' (4.6%) / 'new informations' (2.1%). Negative sides of offered information were ‘not enough to give scientific basis and/or to simplify special evidences too much’(60.8%) / ‘to exaggerate the contents’ (41.4%) / ‘not to indicate the notice of side effect and/or to advertise that there are not side effect from using their goods’ (34.1%).
