  • Lately, high production rate welding processes for Al alloys, which are used as LNG FPSO cargo containment system material, have been developed to overcome the limit of installation and high rework rates. In particular, plasma-metal inert gas (MIG) hybrid (PMH) welding can be used to obtain a higher deposition rate and lower porosity, while facilitating a cleaning effect by preheating and post heating the wire and the base metal. However, an asymmetric undercut and a black-colored deposit are created on the surface of PMH weld in Al alloys. For controlling the surface defect formation, the wire feeding speed and nozzle diameter in the PMH weld was investigated through arc phenomena with high-speed imaging and metallurgical analysis.

  • Industrial gas drying, dilute gas mixtures purification, air fractionation, hydrogen production from steam reformers and petroleum refinery off-gases, etc are conducted by using adsorptive separation technology. The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) has certain advantages over the other methods, such as absorption and membrane, that are a low energy requirement and cost-effectiveness. A key component of PSA systems is adsorbents that should be highly selective to a gas being separated from its mixture streams and have isotherms suitable for the operation principle. The six standard types of isotherms have been examined in this review, and among them the best behavior in the adsorption of $CO_2$ as a function of pressure was proposed in aspects of maximizing a working capacity upon excursion between adsorption and desorption cycles. Zeolites and molecular sieves are historically typical adsorbents for such PSA applications in gas and related industries, and their physicochemical features, e.g., framework, channel structure, pore size, Si-to-Al ratio (SAR), and specific surface area, are strongly associated with the extent of $CO_2$ adsorption at given conditions and those points have been extensively described with literature data. A great body of data of $CO_2$ adsorption on the nanoporous zeolitic materials have been collected according to pressure ranges adsorbed, and these isotherms have been discussed to get an insight into a better $CO_2$ adsorbent for PSA processes.

  • Hydrogen is getting more attention owing to the seriousness of air pollution and dependance on oil import, UNCCC(United Nations Convention on Climate Change) for reducing the emission of $CO_2$. This fact is not confined in a certain country but global recognition and several countries initiated R&D competition for commercializing the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Within 20${\sim}$30 years cost effective hydrogen production can be possible using fossil fuels because so much research is carried out up to now. But it is so far to produce the most of the hydrogen using renewable resources considering the present status of R&D and cost effectiveness. Several automobile companies planed for mass production of hydrogen vehicle by 2010 but changed or canceled the plan owing to the difficulty of R&D and the low status of infrastructure penetration. This paper surveyed the hydrogen energy policy, R&D program and commercialization strategy of advanced country, international agency, automobile and energy company to analyze the global status of R&D and policy. And the survey of R&D program is focused on the part of hydrogen production, storage, delivery and fuel cell.

  • Microalgae are aquatic microorganisms capable of photosynthetic growth using water, carbon dioxide and sunlight, and can replace petroleum for transportation. It is receiving great attention as a potential next-generation biological resource. The microalgae biodiesel production process is largely based on the development of highly efficient strains and mass production. It consists of cultivation, harvesting, oil extraction, fuel conversion and by-product utilization. Currently, microalgae diesel is 3-5 times more expensive than petroleum diesel. However, with the optimization of each element technology and the development of integrated systems, not only biofuels, but also industrial materials, wastewater treatment, and greenhouse gases As application expands to various fields such as abatement, the timing of commercialization may be brought forward. Oil prices have recently fallen due to the influence of sail gas. Although there has been a significant drop, global warming is an urgent challenge for current and future generations. In particular, Korea, which does not have oil resources, We must always prepare for political environmental changes, high oil prices, and energy crises. In this paper, the need for eco-friendly biofuel for carbon dioxide conversion. In addition to research trends, domestic and international research trends, and economic prospects, the concept of microalgae and the element technologies of the biodiesel production process are briefly discussed introduced.

  • Research collaboration between industry and universities is high on many policy agenda's nowadays, especially with regard to science-based technological innovation. Nonetheless, there have been few attempts at examining large-scale systematic and quantitative data on the nature and extent of university-industry collaborations. The objective of this paper is to explore the patterns and trends of research collaborations between universities and companies for scientific knowledge production in the seven science-based technologies. This paper uses co-authored articles published in major scientific journals in the world as an indicator of collaborative scientific research between universities, companies and governmental research institutes. The tens of thousands of co-authorship papers in the northeast region in the US over the years 2006 to 2010 were analyzed for collaboration patterns and their spatial characteristics. This paper finds that there were increases both in the proportions of multiple authored, particularly five or more, papers, and in the volume of international collaborations. By examining a type of collaborations between different institutions, research collaboration between universities and companies in this region is relatively high share at national level. This suggests that the national or even international scale seems more appropriate for innovation policies.

  • To promote the industry of PEMFC, the commercialization of its parts especially bipolar plate is needed. The bipolar plate is one of key parts for PEMFC, which occupies cost portion of 5~8% in the system. To replace the bipolar plate of machined graphite highly costly, the stamped thin matal or the molded carbon composite has been developed. According to the merits and demerits of each material and its forming process, the stamped metallic plate has been considered to the bipolar plate of PEMFC for automotive, and on the other hand, the molded composite plate has been considered to one for building applications. Hankook Tire Co., Ltd. has developed the carbon composite material and the manufacturing process for the bipolar plates. The developed bipolar plates were proved to be fully applicable to PEMFC of building applications in characteristics and performance, and so government strategic project to develop the mass-production technology for bipolar plates was started and is being conducted by the company. Through the government project for obtaining both the commercialization technology and production capacity for the bipolar plates, the price and the performance of domestic PEMFCs are expected to become competitive in international market.

  • Nowadays major shipbuilding companies are trying to expand their business not only to shipbuilding but to offshore projects as well. DSME is one of them. DSME is trying to set up a flexible design and construction environment for shipbuilding and offshore construction in a single shipyard. The shipbuilding and offshore projects, however, have their unique technology but they need to be designed and constructed in one site. To support this new requirement, DSME has developed an integrated CAD system for ship and offshore projects. In this integrated design environment, the designers can design commercial ships and offshore projects in a flexible manner. Concurrent design is very important for ship and offshore design. As compared to the complexity of the product, the design period is quite short. In effect, the design system for the ship and offshore project has to support concurrent design. One essential point of concurrent design environment is a product model based design system. DSME has developed and implemented the 3D product model concurrent design environment based on Tribon M3. Tribon is a widely used CAD system in shipbuilding area that is developed by Tribon Solutions. DSME has both customized the Tribon system and developed in-house application systems to support its own design and production procedures. All the design objects are modeled in one common database to support concurrent design and accurate production. The major in-house development focused on the modeling automation and automatic drawing generation. During the drawing generation process many of the additional production information are also extracted from the 3D product model. In addition, several applications and functionalities have been developed to apply the shipbuilding based Tribon M3 system to offshore projects. The development of shape nesting, tubular connection, isometric drawing, grating nesting systems are the typical.

  • The scopes of the supply chain management in construction projects has expanded from the field management focusing on field storage, transportation, and lifting to the whole supply chain from the materials to field. The expansion of the supply chain management can raise the possibilities of leaner production, which enables shortened lead time of the difficult-to-operate materials, and prevents the work interference or delay. However, the expanded management range requires more information and management than an existing management style currently used for factory production of iron frame, curtain wall, PC, etc. In addition, there are limitations that expand the existing management style into the new supply chain management in construction projects and therefore it is required to automate the existing management style in order to extend the management range. The objective of this study is to propose the process and equipment that can manage the supply chain of the materials which range from the factory production to the field storage based on RFID/USN techniques, introducing small-sized transportation equipment(intelligent pallet), the vehicle tool kit(intelligent trailer), and in-and-out management equipment(Gate Sensor) as a prototype to effectively develop the appliances for operating the proposed process, and present the application possibility of the appliances. The full paper will present then the test results that the proposed appliances for the supply chain management automatically transmit and receive the generated information between the appliances or the appliance and sever under various wireless network circumstances such as zigbee, wibro, Wi-Fi, and CDMA.

  • A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, dubbed SNUFOAM, was developed to predict the performance of ship resistance using a CFD tool kit with open source libraries. SNUFOAM is based on a pressure-based cell-centered finite volume method and includes a turbulence model with wall functions. The mesh sensitivity, such as the skewness and aspect ratio, was evaluated for the convergence. Two wall functions were tested to solve the turbulent flow around a ship, and the one without the assumption of the equilibrium state between turbulent production and dissipation in the log law layer was selected. The turbulent flow around a ship simulated using SNUFOAM was compared to that by a commercial CFD code, FLUENT. SNUFOAM showed the nearly same results as FLUENT and proved to be an alternative to commercial CFD codes for the prediction of ship resistance performance.

  • It was investigated whether or not flight has any effects on oviposition and colony development of the artificially hibernated Bombus terrestris queen and ,$CO_2$-treated queen. Flight periods were defined as 0 days (control), 1 day, 3 days and 6 days. The weights of queens after flight were 1.5-8.9% lower than those before flight depending on the flight periods. The oviposition and colony development of artificially hibernated and $CO_2$-treated B. terrestris queen were affected by the flight. Among flight periods tested, in particular, the queens start to flight for 3 days showed better flight effect than those other flight periods in the colony development, rate of colony foundation, rate of progeny-queen production, the number of worker and queen produced. But, the longer the flight periods is, the worse the oviposition and colony development of the queens hibernated artificially and $CO_2$-treated are (i.e., the 6 days-flight queen).
