  • Strength of loess that experienced cyclic freeze and thaw is of great significance for evaluating stability of slopes and foundations in loess regions. This paper takes the frequently encountered loess in the Northwestern China as the study object and carried out three kinds of laboratory tests including freeze-thaw test, direct shear test and SEM test to investigate the strength behaviors of loess after cyclic freeze and thaw, and the correlation with meso-level changes in soil structure. Results show that for loess specimens at four dry densities, the cohesion decreases with freeze-thaw cycles until a residual value is reached and thus an exponential equation is proposed. Besides, little change in the angle of internal friction was observed as freeze-thaw proceeds. This may depend on the varying of soil structure, based on which a clue can be found from the surface morphology and mesoscopic scanning of loess specimens. Clearly we observed significant changes in surface morphology of loess and it tends to aggravate at higher water contents or more cycles of freeze and thaw. Moreover, freeze-thaw cycling leads to obvious changes in the meso-structure of loess including lowering the particle aggregates and increasing both the proportion of fine particles and porosity area ratio. A damage variable dependent on the ratio of porosity area is introduced based on the continuum damage mechanics and its correlation with cohesion is discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear parameters on cutting slope of weathered granite soils by using small dynamic cone penetration test on the very moment of its cutting. The results were : On the relations among N$\_$c/, Li, and CEC, the condition of Li>6%, CEC>14(meq/100g) corresponds to that of N$\_$c/ values of 2∼30, and 3<CEC<14(meq/100g) to N$\_$c/=30∼50. Comparing the smallest penetration depth from two small dynamic cone penetration tests done at 5m below from the top of the slope on April 15th, October 31t. there was a l0cm difference. So we could find out the degree of weathering on the slope. And dividing the difference by 190 days (the whole testing time), we could know it's being weathered 0.052mm each day. The more N. value increases, the more shear parameters(internal friction angle ; $\phi$, cohesion : c) increase at a standard pressure($\sigma$>32㎪). So the condition of N$\_$c/=2∼50 corresponds to that of $\phi$=27∼50, c=12∼49㎪. From the above testing results, the N$\_$c/ values more correspond to $\phi$ values than c values. In conclusion, this study suggests that on small dynamic cone penetration test a penetration boundary line of 5 centimeters is decided at around Li=4%, CEC=3(meq/100g) which is classified as a strong weathering soil. It also shows that as Li increases CEC increases as well, while N$\_$c/ decreases.

  • Jeju-do is a island formed by the volcanic activity and has more than 360 volcanic cones distributed widely along the long axis of the elliptically shaped island. The volcanic cones consist mainly of scoria, so called "Song-I" in the local dialect. In this study the chemical and soil mechanical properties of scoria being very different from those of the inland were investigated with the various tests. In the sieve-passing test the particle size of scoria had more than 10 of uniformity coefficient and gradation coefficient of 1 ~ 3, showing relatively homogenous distribution. Based on the uniformity classification, scoria was assorted into GW. In the large scale direct shear tested for measuring the mechanical strength of scoria the internal friction angle of red scoria was $37^{\circ}$ and that of black scoria was $36^{\circ}$. This indicated that there was no difference in the mechanical strength between two types of scoria. On the other hand, red and black scoria had $1.24{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3.55{\times}10^{-2}$ cm/sec of k values for the static water level permeability, thus being classified into a coarse or fine sand as compared with that representing the saturated soil. They also had 1.411 to $1.477\;g/cm^3$ of notably low $r_{dmax}$ values for the compaction test as compared with common soil, which was considered to be due to their low specific gravity and high porosity. In conclusion, the soil mechanic properties of scoria obtained from this study are thought to be very helpful for reducing lots of trial and error happening in the civil engineering construction.

  • Application of mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSEW) abutment has been rapidly increasing in United States of America, Pennsylvania since 2002. MSEW is effective for reducing construction cost and period compared to general concrete reinforced wall. In the paper, theoretical background and conventional criterion of MSEW abutment that is widely used abroad are analyzed. Based on the results, application of suitable MSEW abutment to domestic bridge type is examined. For the application of MSEW abutment in Korea, load interacting with upper shoe in domestic bridge types and structural analyses of beam seat and pile are investigated. As a result, all applications are possible except for PSC BOX Bridge that has heavy self-weight of girder. Through two and three dimensional numerical analyses, horizontal behaviour mechanisms between pile and MSEW were analyzed and field tests are also carried out for seven piles behind earth walls. From results of field tests, it is confirmed that an angle of internal friction of backfill material needs to be greater than 34 degree to use H-Pile as foundation of MSEW.

  • Ferrous slag is a by-product from steel making process and waste concrete is generated from construction activities. Large part of ferrous slag and waste concrete are recycled as construction materials. However, Ca2+ leaching out of ferrous slag and waste concrete in the water-contacting environment can cause a strength change. Strength can be reduced due to the dissolution of solid form of CaO which is one of the main contents of ferrous slag and waste concrete. On the other hand, strength can be enhanced due to the pozzolanic reaction of cementitious components with water. In this study, steelmaking slag, blast furnace slag, and waste concrete were aged by exposure to raining events, and the change of their compaction and shear strength characteristics was investigated. Optimum moisture content of all materials used in this study increased with aging period while maximum dry unit weight slightly decreased, implying that the relative contents of fine particles increased as the CaO solid particles were dissolved. Internal friction angle and shear strength of recycled materials also increased with aging period, indicating that the materials became denser by the decrease of void ratio attributed to the fine particles generated during the weathering process and the development of cementitious compounds increasing the bonding and interlocking forces between the particles. The results of this study demonstrated that mechanical strength of recycled materials used as construction materials has little chance to be deteriorated during their service life.

  • In this study, application potential of SINMAP, a GIS-based landslide hazard mapping tool, is evaluated through a case study. Through the application to the severe landslide events occurred during a heavy storm in 1991 on the Mt. Dalbong area about 78 kilometers south from Seoul, SINMAP successfully spotted most landslide sites. The effects and proper ranges of three calibration parameters of SINMAP, i.e. the soil internal friction angle, the combined cohesion of tree roots and soil, and T/R, were examined through comparison of predicted landslides with the landslide inventory data. From the findings of this study, it seems that SINMAP could be used as an effective screening tool for landslide hazard mapping especially for mountain areas with fairly steep slopes and relatively thin soil layers.

  • In this study, the in-situ stress, strength and stress-strain characteristics with shear parameters (UU, CU, ${\bar{CU}}$) are analytically evaluated and the stability analyses are carried out under loading/unloading conditions. The in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour may become different according to input shear parameters in finite element analyses with construction step, Especially, if the internal friction angle in Mohr-Coulomb model is set to zero, the in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour might not be properly predicted. The results from CU parameter of total stress analysis have no significant difference with the results from CU of effective stress analysis. Therefore, in the numerical analysis for soft ground, CU parameters can be applied to predict in-situ stress and stress-strain behaviors. In addition, the calculation method was proposed to determine the shear parameter of Mohr-Coulomb model, which is corresponding to the shear strength equivalent to that of in-situ soil.

  • In order to study the mechanical properties of rock salt, triaxial compression tests under different temperatures and confining pressure are carried out on rock salt specimens, the influence of temperature and confining pressure on the mechanical properties of rock salt was studied. The results show that the temperature has a deteriorative effect on the mechanical properties of rock salt. With the increase of temperature, the peak stress of rock salt decreases visibly; the plastic deformation characteristics become much obvious; the internal friction angle increases; while the cohesion strength decreases. With the increase of confining pressure, the peak stress and peak strain of rock salt will increase under the same temperature. Based on the test data, the Duncan-Chang constitutive model was modified, and the modified Duncan-Chang rock salt constitutive model considering the effect of temperature and confining pressure was established. The stress-strain curve calculated by the modified model was compared with the stress-strain curve obtained from the test. The close match between the test results and the model prediction suggests that the modified Duncan-Chang constitutive model is accurate in describing the behavior of rock slat under different confining pressure and temperature conditions.

  • This paper investigates the pseudo-static analysis of reinforced slopes with geosynthetics under the influence of the uniform surcharge to evaluate the maximum tensile force of reinforcements. The analytical approach has basically been used to develop the new practical procedure to estimate both tensile force and its distribution in the height of the slope. The base of developed relationships has been adapted from the conventional horizontal slice method. The limit equilibrium framework and the assumptions of log-spiral failure surface have directly been used for proposed analytical approach. A new analytical approach considering a single layer of non-cohesion soil and the influence of uniform surcharge has been extracted from the 5n equation and 5n unknown parameters. Results of the proposed method illustrated that the location of the surcharge, amount of internal friction and the seismic coefficient have the remarkable effect on the tensile force of reinforcement and might be 2 times increasing on it. Furthermore, outcomes show that the amount of tensile force has directly until 2 times related to the amount of slope angle and its height range. Likewise, it is observed that the highest value of the tensile force in case of slope degree more than 60-degree is observed on the lower layers. While in case of less degree the highest amount of tensile force has been reported on the middle layers and extremely depended to the seismic coefficient. Hence, it has been shown that the tensile force has increased more than 6 times compared with the static condition. The obtained results of the developed procedure were compared with the outcomes of the previous research. A good agreement has been illustrated between the amount results of developed relationships and outcomes of previous research. Maximum 20 and 25 percent difference have been reported in cases of static and seismic condition respectively.

  • More than 64% of Korea's land is occupied by mountain regions, which have terrain characteristics that make it vulnerable to mountain disasters. The trails of Taebaeksan Mountain National Park-the region considered in this study-are located in the vicinity of steep slopes, and therefore, the region is vulnerable to landslides and debris flow during heavy storms. In this study, a slope stability model, which is a deterministic analysis method, was used to examine the potential occurrence of landslides. According to the soil classification of the detailed soil map, the specific weight of soil, effective cohesion, internal friction angle of soil, effective soil depth, and ground slope were used as the parameters of the model, and slope stability was evaluated based on the DEM of a 1 m grid. The results of the slope stability analysis showed that the more hazardous the area was, the closer the ratio of groundwater/effective soil depth is to 1.0. Further, many of the private houses and commercial facilities in the lower part of the national park were shown to be exposed to danger.
