Examination on Combustion Quality Analysis of Residue Heavy Fuel Oil and Improvement of Combustion Quality Using Pre-injection (중질 잔사유의 연소성 분석과 보조 분사에 의한 연소성 향상에 관한 검토)

  • Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO.   • The use of diesel engines has recently increased due to the need for internal combustion engines with a high thermal efficiency and low harmful exhaust gas. The PCCI(premixed charged compression ignition) technology has been studied specifically to simultaneously reduce NOx and PM. While the PCCI means has the merit of reducing NOx and PM, control of the combustion phase is difficult. In this study, Flame visualization was then performed with an endoscope system in order to compare combustion flame characteristics in an commercial diesel engine.

  • This paper is to suggest a simple flame model for the analysis of an internal flame of rotary kilns and to present the application cases. Reaction rates in the multi combustion stages of the selected solid fuel were calculated considering the reaction rates with the Arrhenius type equations. In addition, primary and secondary air flow arrangement were considered. As a simple application case, the combustion trends according to the different solid fuels were described. Improved operating conditions as related with the fuel characteristics were shown to be important for the stable combustion characteristics and the performance of the reactors as defined by the exit temperature of the solid materials.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Natural Gas Engine under Different Operating Conditions

  • Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

  • In the present study, the internal combustion engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problems on thermal load, abnormal combustion, etc in the engine. Thin film instantaneous temperature probe was made, and the measuring system was established. The instantaneous surface temperatures in the constant volume combustion chamber were measured with this system and the heat flux was obtained by Fourier analysis. Maximum instantaneous temperatures were obtained after 55∼60ms from ignition and they increased as equivalence ratio and varied differently as the position of probe. Total heat loss during combustion time was affected by the equivalence ratio and differed widely as the position of probe.

  • Mild combustion or Flameless oxidation(FLOX) have been considered as one of the most prospective clean-combustion technologies to meet both the targets of high process efficiency and low pollutant emissions. A mild combustor with high air preheating and strong internal exhaust gas recirculation is characterized by relatively low flame temperature, low NOx emissions, no visible flame and no sound. In this study, the Steady Flamelet Approach has been applied to numerically analyze the combustion processes and NOx formation in the mild combustor. The detailed discussion has been made f3r the basic characteristics of mild combustor, numerical results and limitation of the present combustion modeling.

The Evaluation of NOx Emission Factor from Large Combustion Facilities in Seoul (서울지역 대형연소시설에서의 질소산화물 배출계수 산정)

  • The emission factor of nitrogen oxides(NOx) was evaluate to clarify the characteristics of NOx emitted from seven large combustion facilities in seoul area. The emission factors of NOx at A-1 and A-2 facilities of internal combustion engine were 66.957kgNOx/ton and 20.913kgNOx/ton, respectively. The emission factor of A-1 facility was higher than that of A-2 facility even same internal combustion engine, because A-1 facility adopted SCR(selective catalystic reactor) for reduction of NOx emission factor of A-2, A-4, and A-7 power generation boiler facilities were 4.300kgNOx/ton, 2.460kgNOx/ton and 1.796kgNOx/ton, respectively. The capacity of A-2 facility was about two times than that of A-4 and A-7. These emission factors were lower than those at facilities in other areas of korea, because of using low NOx burner of power generation boiler. The emission factors of NOx at A-3 and A-6 incinerator facilities were 0.147kgNOx/ton and 0.221kgNOx/ton which were lower than other facilities, respectively, because these facilities incinerate municipal solid waste of low heating value and uwe SCR for reducing NOx concentration.

Large Eddy Simulation and Parametric Study of Turbulent Flow Characteristics in the Internal Combustion Chamber using SGS Model (연소실 내 난류유동장 특성에 대한 아격자 모델을 사용한 LES 모사 및 관련인자 영향 평가)

  • Large eddy simulation (LES) is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in combustion chamber flows due to the promise of wider generality and more accurate results compared to Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) models. This study presents the appropriate subgrid-scale(SGS) model in LES for predicting the turbulent flow field in the internal combustion engine. The study of the effects of model and numerical parameters such as discretization scheme, initial condition, time step and SGS model was performed. The results of LES using the SGS model were found to be in the good agreement with experimental data.

Cross-section micrography of burning pulverized coal particles (연소중 미분탄의 단면관측)

  • An experimental investigation on the combustion behavior of pulverized coal particles was performed using the cross-section micrography techniques while sample coal particles were collected in-situ from the flow reactor. The coal particles were representative of pulverized bituminous coal undergoing a raped pyrolysis and combustion, however, quenched at the time when the particles were deposited onto a sample plate. The internal structure of coal was observed to change as deposited. Upon injection into a flow reactor, bituminous coal particles showed many holes which represented internal pore formation during the pyrolysis. The relative portion of the remaining matrix of coal was decreasing as the residence time progressed. This direct observation of cross-section of burning particles enabled better understanding of the coal combustion behavior.

IN-CYLINDER FLOW ANALYSIS USING WAVELET ANALYSIS

  • Better fundamental understanding of the interactions between the in-cylinder flows and combustion process is an important requirement for further improvement in the fuel economy and emissions of internal combustion(IC) engines. Flow near a spark plug at the time of ignition plays an important role for early flame kernel development(EFKD). Velocity data measurements in this study were made with a two-component laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) near a spark plug in a single cylinder optical spark ignition(SI) engine with a heart-shaped combustion chamber. LDV velocity data were collected on an individual cycle basis under wide-open motored conditions with an engine speed of 1,000rpm. This study examines and compares the flow fields as interpreted through ensemble, cyclic and discrete wavelet transformation(DWT) analysis. The energy distributions in the non-stationary engine flows are also investigated over crank angle phase and frequency through continuous wavelet transformation(CWT) for a position near a spark plug. Wavelet analysis is appropriate for analyzing the flow fields in engines because it gives information about the transient events in a time and frequency plane. The results of CWT analysis are provided and compared with the mean flows of DWT first decomposition level for all cycles at a position. Low frequency high energy found with CWT corresponds well with the peak locations of the mean velocity. The high frequency flows caused by the intake jet gradually decay as the piston approaches the bottom dead center(BDC).
