  • The main difference between mono-volume rendering and multi-volume rendering is data intermixing. In this paper, we first propose a selective rendering method for fast visualizing specific volume according to the surface level and then present data intermixing method for multiple volumes. The selective rendering method is to generate distance transformed volume using a distance transform to determine the minimum distance to the nearest interesting part and then render it. The data intermixing method for multiple volumes is to combine several volumes using intensity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method with depth information and then render it. We show the results of selective rendering of left ventricle and right ventricle generated from EBCT cardiac images and of data intermixing for combining original volume and left ventricular volume or right ventricular volume. Our method offers a visualization technique of specific volume according to the surface level and an acceleration technique using a distance transformed volume and the effective visual output and relation of multiple images using three different intermixing methods in three-dimensional space.

  • Optical characteristics of InGaAs quantum dot (QD) laser structures with an Al native oxide (AlOx) layer as a current-blocking layer were studied by means of photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, and spatially-resolved micro-PL techniques. The InGaAs QD samples were first grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), and then prepared by wet oxidation and thermal annealing techniques. For the InGaAs QD structures treated by the wet oxidation and thermal annealing processes, a broad PL emission due to the intermixing effect of the AlOx layer was observed at PL emission energy higher than that of the non-intermixed region. We observed a dominant InGaAs QD emission at about 1.1 eV in the non-oxide AlAs region, while InGaAs QD-related emissions at about 1.16 eV and $1.18{\sim}1.20eV$ were observed for the AlOx and the SiNx regions, respectively. We conclude that the intermixing effect of the InGaAs QD region under an AlOx layer is stronger than that of the InGaAs QD region under a non-oxided AlAs layer.

  • We demonstrate a polarization insensitive waveguide filter using quantum well intermixing(QWI). The bandgap of epitaxial layer is modified from 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ using QWI and a Bragg grating filter is demonstrated using electron beam lithography technology. The fabricated waveguide filter has a 70% reflection efficiency and a 1.46nm filter bandwidth. Furthermore polarization insensitive transmission characteristics are observed. The device can be applied to photonic integrated circuits(PIC).

  • We report the selective area bandgap tuning of multiple quantum well structures by an impurity free vacancy induced quantum well intermixing technique. A 3dB waveguide directional coupler was fabricated in the disordered section of an intermixed quantum well sample as a demonstration of photonic device applications.

  • We investigated the quantum well intermixing (QWI) of a compressively strained InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple quantum well (MQW) by using impurity free vacancy diffusion technique. The samples with InGaAs/$SiO_2$ capping layer showed a higher degree of intermixing compared to that of InP/$SiO_2$ capping layer after rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Band-gap shift difference as large as 123 meV (195 nm) was observed between samples capped with InGaAs/$SiO_2$ and with InP/$SiO_2$ layer at RTA temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. Using the InGaAs/$SiO_2$ cap layer, the band-gap wavelength of MQW was changed by the intermixing from 1.55 $\mu\textrm{m}$ band to 1.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ band with a wavelength shift of a 237 nm. The transform from MQW structure to homogenous alloy was observed above the RTA temperature of $700^{\circ}C$.

  • We have investigated aluminum cluster deposition using a classical molecular dynamics simulations. We studied the variations of the cluster momentum and the impulse force during collisions, and found that the close-packed cluster impact has some of properties of the single particle collision and the linear atomic chain collisions. We also simulated the series of energetic cluster deposition with energy Per atom. When energy Per atom in cluster has some eV rather than very low, the intermixing occurred easily in growth film and we can obtain a good film without subsequent annealing process.

  • Coherent precipitation of Zn3P2 during Zn diffusion in a GaInAsP/InP heterostructure was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Zn-diffusion-induced intermixing of Ga and In across the GaInAsP/InP heterointerface provided a Ga-mixed InP region which was nearly lattice-matched with Zn3P2 crystal and thus allowed thecoherent precipitation of Zn3P2. The Zn3P2 precipitates were preferentially nucleated at stacking faults which were formed to relax interfacial strain built up by the intermixing. The precipitates were grown to planar epitaxial layer along (100) plane in the lattice-matched region. The TEM images and diffraction pettern revealed that the tetragonal Zn3P2 crystals were coherently matched to the fcc structured GaInP matrix by the {{{{ SQRT {2} $\times$ SQRT {2} $\times$2 }} arrangement. The precipitation reaction of Zn3P2 was explained by an atomic migration model based on the kick-out mechanism.

  • Utilizing impurity free vacancy diffusion (IFVD) method, area selective intermixing of InGaAs/InGaAsP multi-quantum well (MQW) structure was done. After this, wavelength division demultiplexing waveguide type photodetectoers was integrated and measured. It showed large blue shift in bandgap due to intermixing of MQW. Photodetectors are based on typical p-i-n structure and devices having large and small bandgap areas line up linearly. Width of waveguide and length of each photodetector are 20 and 250 ${\mu}m$, respectively, TE/TM polarized light from tunable laser was butt-coupled to the photodetector and spectral response was measured. Photodetectors can demultiplexing 1480 and 1550 nm wavelength.
