  • A highly transparent interfacial layer (HTIL) to enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was prepared via a polymer-assisted (PA) approach. Poly(vinyl chloride)-graft-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (PVC-g-POEM) was synthesized via atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and was used as a sacrificial template. The PVC-g-POEM graft copolymer induced partial coordination of a hydrophilic titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) sol-gel solution with the POEM domain, resulting in microphase separation, and in turn, the generation of mesopores upon calcination. These phenomena were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-visible light transmittance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The DSSCs incorporating HTIL60/20 (consisting of a top layer with a pore size of 60 nm and a bottom layer with a pore size of 20 nm) exhibited the best overall conversion efficiency (6.36%) among the tested samples, which was 25.9% higher than that of a conventional blocking layer (BL). DSSC was further characterized using the Nyquist plot and incident-photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra.

  • For estimation of chain-matching phenomena between normal paraffin as a solvent and straight-chain fatty acid as an additive, the density measurement of n-dodecane, n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane were carried out at oil temperature 313K and pressure up to 1.3 GPa. Their solidification pressure were easily determined by the appearance of molecular crystal, abrupt volumetric contraction and generation of heat of solidification and showed minima under the matching condition. The bulk modulus K of molecular crystal was evaluated using phase diagram. The bulk modulus showed maxima under the each matching condition. The chain matching effect on the bulk modulus beyond the scope of the interfacial phenomena are confirmed.

  • A level-set (LS) method is presented for computation of boiling phenomena which involve liquid-vapor interfaces that evolve, merge and break up in time, the flow and temperature fields influenced by the interfacial motion, and the microlayer that forms between the solid and the vapor phase near the wall. The LS formulation for tracking the phase interfaces is modified to include the effects of phase change on the liquid-vapor interface and contact angle on the liquid-vapor-solid interline. The LS method can calculate an interface curvature accurately by using a smooth distance function. Also, it is straightforward to implement for two-phase flows in complex geometries. The numerical method is applied for analysis of nucleate boiling on a horizontal surface and film boiling on a horizontal cylinder.

  • In this thesis, the electrification phenomenon was studied by measurement of charging current and discharging current in polymers when the carriers generated by corona discharge were supplied to the surface of polymers. Corona charging current of PVC, polar and noncrystalline polymer, was larger than that of nonpolar and amorphous polymers. Corona charging current on the specimen of naked upper surface (CIM) was larger than charging current on the specimen of electrode made. Carrier injection differed from interfacial phase of polymer surFace. The transfer phenomenon vaned with chemical structure of polymer and then the polar effect of PVC was remarkable because of large electron affinity of Cl. In the characteristics of discharging current of PVC, the abnormal current was observed. It was supposed that this phenomena presented the trap of injected carriers in PVC and that static electricity phenomenon was generated by trap.

  • Some interested phenomena, which were appeared near the bonding interface, were investigated by angle lapping and delineation method, SEM, and TEM observations. Voids, defects, material continuity, and interfacial oxide stability were observed and discussed in the fusion-bonded Bi-Si or Si-$SiO_2$/Si wafer pairs.

  • In multiphase systems, surface wettability is one of dominant design parameters to enhance system performance. Since surface wettability can be maximized and minimized with micro-textured surfaces, therefore micro-textured surfaces are widely countered in various research and engineering fields. In this study, for better understanding of micrometer scaled surface wettability, spreading phenomena is experimentally investigated on the hydrophilic micro-textured surfaces. By photolithography and conventional dry etching method, there are prepared the surfaces with uniformly arrayed micro-pillars. The interfacial motions of a water droplet on the test sections are visualized by high speed camera in top view. On the basis of visualization data, it is analyzed the relation between dynamic coefficient and geometrical features on micro-textured surfaces.

  • The interaction and mixing of high-temperature melt and water is the important technical issue in the safety assessment of water-cooled reactors to achieve ultimate core coolability. For specific advanced light water reactor (ALWR) designs, deliberate mixing of the core-melt and water is being considered as a mitigative measure, to assure ex-vessel core coolability. The paper provides the background of past experiments as well as key fundamentals that are needed for melt-water interfacial transport phenomena, thus enabling the development of innovative safety technologies for advanced LWRs that will assure ex-vessel core coolability.

  • The recent trends in numerical simulation of various spray phenomena are reviewed in this article. Major subtopics are atomization/breakup, collision/coalescence, wall collision, interfacial transfer, droplet dispersion, two-phase injection and spray combustion. Each submodel has been under continuous refinement and validation against more extensive data base by advanced laser diagnostic techniques. Most uncertainty in current spray simulations come from these physical submodels, not from excessive computational constraints.

When the chemical A was pasted in laminate interface, there was little space charge in XLPE/EPDM interface and it was shown that breakdown strength of XLPE/EPDM laminate was influenced by laminate condition.

  • Data on the solubility of p-hydroxy-benzoate in amide-water cosolvent system and surface tension of the binary amide-water cosolvents are analyzed in terms of the possible mechanism for cosolvency. The results of the study suggest that strong partitioning of the alkylated amides to the ester surface, thus reducing the hydrophobic interface within the system, nay account for much of the cosolvency phenomena observed in these systems.
