  • For one-dimensional two-phase flow without phase change and without axially-temporally rapid change of pressure, the interrelationship between the drift-flux model and the two-fluid model is studied. It is derived on the basis of the fact that the vapor conservation equation is related to the momentum equation by the drift flux. Starting from the two-fluid model, we obtain the interfacial friction expressed in terms of drift-flux parameter. Also, by deriving the void propagation equation, the drift-flux is shown to have jnterrelationship with forces in the two-fluid model.

  • TiC coating formed on $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composite ceramic by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has an improved microstructures, better thermal shock resistance and interfacial bonding than TiN coating does. TiN coating formed by CVD, however, has lower friction coefficients against steels and better chemical stability. The experimental results indicate that the coated insert is superior to the uncoated one in flank and crater wear resistance. And the multilayer coating shows an improved wear resistance than the monolayer coating.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC), Titanium nitride(TiN), and Titanium carbonnitride(Ti(C,N)) films were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$, $TiCl_4-N_2-H_2$, and $TiCl_4-CH_4-N_2-H_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The experimental results indicate that TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings on $Si_3N_4$ -TiC ceramic have an improved microstructural property, good thermal shock resistance, and good interfacial bonding. However TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good chemical stability. It is found by cutting test that coated insert compared with $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramic have a superior flank and crater wear resistance. And multilayer coating compared with monolayer coating shows a improved wear resistance.

  • Light Mg alloy stands on the center of investigation due to the high potential of industrial application not only to the structural, but also to the functional fields. However, the intrinsic low strength and corrosion resistance have limited to extend its industrial use. In order to overcome the disadvantage, various attempts have been come to the modification of composition, resulting in finding Mg-Zn-Y alloys. The cast Mg-Zn-Y alloy leads to the high strength and hardness, low friction coefficient and low interfacial energy in both the ambient and elevated temperature.

  • Recent researches have reported that the superposition of ultrasonic vibrations in metal forming provides beneficial effects such as the reduction of forming load, flow stress and interfacial friction which improves the surface quality of end products. This paper presents experimental investigations on the effects of ultrasonic vibrations in upsetting tests of aluminum. The ultrasonic exciting system consists of piezoelectric transducer and resonator was designed and constructed to superimpose high frequency oscillation on the forming tools. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted upsetting tests were performed for three vibration modes five amplitudes, and the results were compared with those of conventional upsetting tests. The results showed that the superimposition of ultrasonic vibration reduces the upsetting load, and the load reduction is only dependent on the amplitude of the applied vibration regardless of deformation histories and vibration modes.

  • Track-bridge interaction has become an essential part in the design of bridges and rails in terms of modern railways. As a unique ballastless slab track, the longitudinal continuous slab track (LCST) or referred to as the China railway track system Type-II (CRTS II) slab track, demonstrates a complex force mechanism. Therefore, a comprehensive track-bridge interaction study between multi-span simply supported beam bridges and the LCST is presented in this work. In specific, we have developed an integrated finite element model to investigate the overall interaction effects of the LCST-bridge system subjected to the actions of temperature changes, traffic loads, and braking forces. In that place, the deformation patterns of the track and bridge, and the distributions of longitudinal forces and the interfacial shear stress are studied. Our results show that the additional rail stress has been reduced under various loads and the rail's deformation has become much smoother after the transition of the two continuous structural layers of the LCST. However, the influence of the temperature difference of bridges is significant and cannot be ignored as this action can bend the bridge like the traffic load. The uniform temperature change causes the tensile stress of the concrete track structure and further induce cracks in them. Additionally, the influences of the friction coefficient of the sliding layer and the interfacial bond characteristics on the LCST's performance are discussed. The systematic study presented in this work may have some potential impacts on the understanding of the overall mechanical behavior of the LCST-bridge system.

  • This paper investigated acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in association with various fracture processes of glass fiber reinforced plastic skin/ aluminum honeycomb core (GF-AH) hybrid composites under compressive and bending loads. Various failure modes such as skin layer fracture, skin/core interfacial fracture, and local plastic yield buckling and cell wall adhesive fracture occurring in the honeycomb cell wall were classified through the fracture identification in association with the AE frequency and amplitude analysis. The distribution of the event-rate in which it has a high amplitude showed a procedure of cell wall adhesive fracture, skin/core interfacial debonding and fiber breakage, whereas distribution of different peak frequencies indicated the plastic deformation of aluminum cell wall and the friction between honeycomb walls. Consequently, the fracture behaviors of GF-AH hybrid composites could be characterized through a nondestructive evaluation employing the AE technique.

  • [ $Si_3N_4$ ] composites have been extensively studied for engineering ceramics, because it has excellent room and high temperature strength, wear resistance properties, good resistance to oxidation, and good thermal and chemical stability. In the present work, carbon short fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by hot press method in $N_2$ atmosphere at $1800^{\circ}C$ using $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives. Content of carbon short fiber was $0\%,\;0.1\%\;and\;0.3\%$. The composites were evaluated in terms of density, flexural strength and elastic modulus through the 3-point bending test at room temperature. Also, The wear behavior was determined by the pin on disk wear tester using silicon nitride ball. Experimental density and flexural strength decreased with increasing content of carbon fiber. But specific modulus increased with increasing content of carbon fiber. In addition, friction coefficient and specific wear loss decreased with increasing content of carbon short fiber by reason of interfacial defects between matrix and fiber.

  • In this study, interfacial properties were measured for imidazoline type cationic surfactant system which has been widely used as a fabric softener, a dispersant, an anti-static agent, a bleach activator, and an emulsifier. The CMC of imidazoline surfactant was near $6{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 32 mN/m. It was found that surface tension was not affected by surfactant concentration but decreased with an increase in pH. The interfacial tension between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-dodecane was shown to be about 0.01 mN/m and equilibration time was not affected by pH. Phase behavior experiment in a binary aqueous surfactant system showed that only micellar solution of $L_1$ phase was found under conditions of temperature and pH investigated during this study. Only a two-phase region consisting of lower-phase microemulsion in equilibrium with excess oil phase existed under the same conditions, when oil was added to the binary surfactant system. The foam stability measured with 1 wt% surfactant solution increased with pH, which is consistent with surface tension measurement result. QCM(quartz crystal microbalance) measurement showed that surfactant adsorption increased with surfactant concentration but decreased with pH. According to the friction measurement, best fabric softening effect by imidazoline surfactant system was found under alkali conditions.

  • We have carried out numerical compression experiments to estimate the mechanical properties (Mohr-Coulomb and elastic) of corestone-bearing saprolites in Beolgyo area. The studied saprolite, consisting of mechanically much stronger corestone and weaker matrix, is a weathering product of the Precambrian granitic gneiss in the Youngnam massif. Since the saprolite consists of larger corestones with diameter up to 2m, it is impossible to directly measure the mechanical properties by physical experiments. We have measured the mechanical properties of corestone and matrix from naturally occurring saprolite and have used them as a reference for our numerical model. Then, we mixed each material and carried out biaxial compression tests while varying the volume percentage of corestones from 0 to 57%. We found that both cohesion and internal friction angle increase with the volume percentage of corestones while elastic modulus remains constant. We found the results from numerical experiments are in contradiction to what is known from physical experiments using artificial saprolites. This may be due to a possibility that the sharp and discrete nature of interface between corestone and matrix in physical experiments differs from the gradual interfacial nature in numerical modelling and natural saprolites.
