  • A linearized model for hysteretic acoustic nonlinearity of imperfectly joined interface is proposed and analyzed by using Coulomb damping to investigate the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients for harmonic waves at the contact interface. Closed crack is modeled as non welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Based on the hysteretic contact stiffness of the contact interface, the reflected and transmitted waves are determined by deriving the tractions on both sides of the interface in terms of the discontinuous displacements across the interface. It is found that the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves are dependent on the frequency and the hysteretic stiffness. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, the higher reflection and lower transmission are obtained. It also shows that the hysteresis of the interface increases the reflection coefficient, but reduces the transmission coefficient. A fatigue crack is also made in aluminum specimen to demonstrate these characteristics of the reflection and transmission of contact interfaces.

  • Recently, the use of barrette pile is remarkably increased specially for high-rise building and bridge foundations. However, on the contrary, very few studies have been made for analyzing barrette pile behavior considering interface behavior between pile and soils around. Therefore, in this paper, these effects are evaluated by using the 3-dimensional non-linear finite element method with the results of full-scale pile load test from the fields. In addition to that, the selection of proper stiffness modulus on the pile interface is discussed.

  • This paper proposes an ultrasonic method for measurement of linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness of contacting surfaces between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressure. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by the reflection and transmission coefficients obtained from three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface using the shear wave. A nonlinear hysteretic spring model was proposed and used to define the quantitative interfacial stiffness of interface with the reflection and transmission coefficients. Acoustic model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves and to determine the linear and nonlinear hysteretic interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are put together to form a contacting surface and pressed by bolt-fastening to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure. It is found from experiment that the linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness are successfully determined by the reflection and transmission coefficient at the contact surfaces through ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement.

  • In this paper, a controller for the linear motor with high speed and stiffness is implemented using SERCOS interface which is a real time communication protocol between the numerical controller(NC) and the motor driver. The proposed controller is mainly composed of current, speed, and position controller, which are designed using the 32-bit DSP(TMS320C31), a high-integrated logic device (EPM7128), and Intelligent Power Module(IPM) to enhance reliability and compactness of the system. The experimental results show the effective performance of the proposed controller for he linear motor with high speed and stiffness.

  • The interactions between a granular pile and raft placed on top are investigated using the continuum approach. The compatibility of vertical and radial displacements along the pile - soil interface and of the vertical displacements along the raft - top of ground interfaces are satisfied. Results show that consideration of radial displacement compatibility does not influence the settlement response of or sharing of the applied load between the granular pile and the raft. The percentage load carried by the granular pile (GP) increases with the increase of its stiffness and decreases with the increase of the relative size of raft. The normal stresses at the raft - soil interface decrease with the increase of stiffness of GP and/or relative length of GP. The influences of GP stiffness and relative length of GP are found to be more for relatively large size of raft. The percentage of load transferred to the base of GP increases with the increase of relative size of raft.

  • Twelve push-out test specimens were conducted with various parameters to study the static and fatigue performance of a new through-bolt shear connector transferring the shear forces of interface between prefabricated hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) slabs and steel girders. It was found that the fibers could improve the fatigue life, capacity and initial stiffness of through-bolt shear connector. While the bolt-hole clearance reduced, the initial stiffness, capacity and slippage of through-bolt shear connector increased. After the steel-concrete interface properties were improved, the initial stiffness increased, and the capacity and slippage reduced. Base on the test results, the equation of the load-slip curve and capacity of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slab were obtained by the regression of test results, and the allowable range of shear force under fatigue load was recommended, which could provide the reference in the design of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slabs.

  • The objective of this paper is to obtain three-dimensional (3D) effective properties for layered composites with imperfect interfaces using mechanics of structure genome. The imperfect interface is modeled using linear traction-displacement model that allows small infinitesimal displacement jump across the interface. The predictions obtained from the current analysis are compared with the 3D finite element analysis (FEA). In this study, it is found that the present model shows excellent agreement with the results obtained using 3D FEA by employing periodic boundary conditions. The prediction also reveals that in-plane longitudinal and shear moduli, and all Poisson's ratios are observed to be not affected by the interfacial stiffness while the predictions of transverse longitudinal and shear moduli are significantly influenced by interfacial stiffness.

  • This paper proposes the shaking table testing method for replicating the dynamic behavior of soil-structure interaction (SSI) system, without any physical soil model and only using superstructure model. Applying original SSI system to the substructure method produces two substructures; superstructure and soil model corresponding to experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. Interaction force acting on interface between the two substructures is observed from measuring the accelerations of superstructure, and the interface acceleration or velocity, which is the needed motion for replicating the dynamic behavior of original SSI system, is calculated from the numerical substructure reflecting the dynamic soil stiffness of soil model. Superstructure is excited by the shaking table with the motion of interface acceleration or velocity. Analyzing experimental results in time and frequency domains show the applicability the proposed methodologies to the shaking table test considering dynamic soil-structure interaction.

  • Imperfectly jointed interface serves as mechanical waveguide for elastic waves and gives rise to two distinct kinds of guided wave propagating along the interface. Contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN) is known to plays major role in the generation of these interface waves called generalized Rayleigh waves in non-welded interface. Closed crack is modeled as non-welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Mathematical analysis of boundary conditions and wave equation is conducted to investigate the dispersive characteristics of the interface waves. Existence of the generalized Rayleigh wave(interface wave) in nonlinear contact interface is verified in theory where the dispersion equation for the interface wave is formulated and analyzed. It reveals that the interface waves have two distinct modes and that the phase velocity of anti-symmetric wave mode is highly dependent on contact conditions represented by linear and nonlinear dimensionless specific stiffness.
