  • This study identifies the interdisciplinary structures of 8 scientific disciplines in science and technology using the data from journal citations and web links, and compares the interdisciplinarity among these scientific disciplines. The interdisciplinarity refers to interdisciplinary connections among scientific fields and the degree of interdisciplinarity is measured by the number of associated fields and the rate of self-citation. A re-arranged classification scheme for science and technology was adopted to identify subject categories of journals and web pages. Web link analysis revealed a few additional interdisciplinary connections that were not identified by the journal citation analysis, thus demonstrating that it is useful means of investigating the interdisciplinarity of scientific fields. Besides, in most of the cases the interdisciplinarity of the engineering fields were found greater than that of the fields in natural sciences in both analyses.

  • This study analyzed humanities and social science (HSS) journals of KCI to examine the multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in the general and miscellaneous fields (hereinafter referred to as 'GM fields'), The multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity identified in this study will be a foundation to improve classification of KCI journals in GM fields. Each journal's multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity were measured by journal-level entropy and document-level entropy, respectively, in the citation relationships. According to the analysis, GM field journals have wide ranges of multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. To improve classification quality of journals in GM fields, the general humanities should be considered as a new classification class for the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary journals in the humanities. Furthermore, this study proposes a strategy to reclassify GM field journals of HSS according to their multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity.

  • The aim of this study is to compare country output and citation impact as well as to assess the level of interdisciplinarity in the field of tribology research during the period 1998-2012, based on the SCOPUS database. Macro-level scientometric indicators such as growth rate, share of international collaborative papers, citation per paper, share of un-cited papers, and publication efficiency index were employed. Further, the Simpson Index of Diversity was used to measure the level of interdisciplinarity. The performance of top countries contributing more than 1000 papers during the study period was discussed. Contributions and share of continents and countries by income groups were examined. Further research contributions and citation impact of selected country groups were analyzed. This study reveals that high levels of interdisciplinarity exist in tribology research. Asia outperforms the other world regions and China contributes most of the papers (25%), while the United States receives most of the citations (22%).

  • As interdisciplinary research has been dominant in various fields, the purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between interdisciplinarity and research impact in the field of Library and Information Science. For a data set, ten journals ranked as the top of 2011 JCR's in terms of JIF (Journal Impact Factor) were selected. The citation data of 1,873 articles from the ten journals were collected from the WoS during the period from 2006 to 2010. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, as network analysis was conducted to investigate the interdisciplinarity of LIS field, interdisciplinarity indicators, and research impact factors were statistically analyzed. The findings of this study confirmed the interdisciplinary knowledge structure of the LIS field as previous studies identified. More importantly, this study demonstrated that a positive correlation existed between interdisciplinarity represented as betweenness centrality and research impact.

  • This study has measured interdisciplinarity using a topic modeling, which automatically extracts sub-topics based on term information appeared in documents group unlike the traditional top-down approach employing the references and classification system as a basis. We used titles and abstracts of the articles published in top 20 journals for the past five years by the 5-year impact factor under the category of 'Information & Library Science' in JCR 2013. We applied 'Discipline Diversity' and 'Network Coherence' as factors in measuring interdisciplinarity; 'Shannon Entropy Index' and 'Stirling Diversity Index' were used as indices to gauge diversity of fields while topic network's average path length was employed as an index representing network cohesion. After classifying the types of interdisciplinarity with the diversity and cohesion indices produced, we compared the topic networks of journals that represent each type. As a result, we found that the text-based diversity index showed different ranking when compared to the reference-based diversity index. This signifies that those two indices can be utilized complimentarily. It was also confirmed that the characteristics and interconnectedness of the sub-topics dealt with in each journal can be intuitively understood through the topic networks classified by considering both the diversity and cohesion. In conclusion, the topic modeling-based measurement of interdisciplinarity that this study proposed was confirmed to be applicable serving multiple roles in showing the interdisciplinarity of the journals.

  • This paper proposes a method of using national R&D patents' CoIPC networks to identify interdisciplinary trends of technology areas related to Korean national R&D. While previous research analyzed interdisciplinarity of national R&D with simple bibliometric descriptions, this research uses the network-based indexes to analyze its interdisciplinarity from the viewpoints of interdisciplinary "diversity of coupling" and "strength of coupling". In this research, this proposed method was used to form a R&D CoIPC network from the Korean national R&D patents registered from 2007 to 2010. It is expected that the proposed method can be incorporated into a system for a national R&D trend analysis, and used to identify the issues of technology convergence in national R&D and formulate its related research policies.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify interdisciplinarity among eight research areas based upon the correlations between researchers' department affiliations and research areas. More specifically, eight research areas and their sub-areas, 153 sub-areas with researchers' department affiliations were analyzed in terms of Pearson correlation analyses. The findings demonstrated that there was interdisciplinarity between Social Science and Multiple Science Areas, Social Science and Medical & Pharmaceutical Area, Natural Science and Medical & Pharmaceutical Area, and Medical & Pharmaceutical Area and Agricultural Science.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate interdisciplinary changes in the field of Archives and Records Management in Korea. For this purpose, this study analyzed disciplinary attributes of citing and cited references appeared in the Journal of the Korean Society of Archives and Records Management during the period, 2001-2011. One hundred and ninty five research articles and two thousands nine hundreds ninty seven cited references were analyzed to find the degree of interdisciplinarity by using direct citation and Brillouin index. Finally, the interdisciplinary changes of source literature and cited references in Korean archival science during the period were suggested.

  • Interdisciplinary research is one of the well-known key words represent the 21st century As in the developed countries, interdisciplinary research is a pervasive phenomenon in Korea. This paper intends to clear up the interdependent structure among disciplines of university researches. First, 39.9% of individual and 59.8% of collaborative research projects of university researches are interdisciplinary. Second, the interdependency among disciplines of collaborative research is more severe than that of individual research. Third, The interdependency among disciplines indicates tile importance of the balanced development in all science and engineering fields.

  • The domain of digital libraries is one of interdisciplinary fields since it contains various aspects of digital libraries. The main findings of digital library interdisciplinarity have been discussed in terms of contents, management and infrastructural technologies within the field of library and information science. The purpose of this study is to identify and widen the interdisciplinary structure of digital library domain by analyzing the collaborations from different disciplines. With 1,394 research articles of digital libraries from 1997 to 2010, the analysis of collaborations of authors from various disciplines was conducted. The results identified that three subject areas of authors such as Information science and library science, Computer science and Engineering were found as the centers to collaborate with various disciplines. In addition, sub-domains of digital library were recognized in terms of core digital library area, natural science area, medical related area and biology and medical area. The findings of this study depict the domain of digital libraries as a variety of subject areas since digital library domain is characterized with both research and practices.
