A method is developed to include the effect of volume expansion in the description of the flame dynamics using G-equation. Line volume-source is used to represent the effect of the exothermic process of combustion with source strength assigned by the density difference between the burned and the unburned region. The present model provides good agreement with the experimental results. Including volume expansion, the flow field is adjusted to accommodate the increased volume flow rate which crossing the flame front and the result predicts the same behavior of measured velocity field qualitatively. The effect of increasing volume expansion does not change the initial growth rate of flame area but increase the residence time. Consequently this effect increases the maximum area of flame front. The flame propagation in varying flow field due to volume expansion provides a promising way to represent the wrinkled turbulent premixed flames in a numerically efficient manner.
The use of electromagnetic wave has been interested in various energy industry because it enhances a flame stability and provides higher safety environments. However it might increase the pollutant emissions such as NOx and soot, and have harmful influence on human and environments. Therefore, it is very important to understand interaction mechanism between flame and electromagnetic wave from environmental point of view. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by electromagnetic wave. Microwave was used as representative electromagnetic wave and a flickering flame was introduced to simulate the more similar combustion condition to industry. The results show that the induced microwave enhances the flame stability and blowout limit. The unstable lifted flickering flames under low fuel/oxidizer velocity is changed to stable attached flames or lift-off flames when microwave applied to the flames, which results from the abundance of radical pool. However, NOx emission was increased monotonically with increasing the microwave power as microwave power increased up to 1.0 kW. The effects might be attributed to the heating of combustion field and thermal NOx mechanism will be prevailed. Soot particle was examined at the post flame region by TEM grid. The morphology of soot particle sampled in the microwave induced flames was similar to the incipient soot that is not agglomerated and contain a lots of liquid phase hydrocarbon such as PAH, which soot particle formed near reaction zone is oxidized on the extended yellow flame region and hence only unburned young particles are emitted on the post flame region.

Numerical analysis on the characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) formation in turbulent nonpremixed hydrogen-air flames was carried out. Lagrange IEM model and Assumed PDF model were applied to consider turbulence-chemistry interaction known to affect the production of NOx. Partial equilibrium assumption was used to predict nonequilibrium effect to which one-half power dependence between EINOx normalized by flame residence time and global strain rate is attributed. As a result. such one-half power dependence could be reproduced only by reaction model including $HO_{2}$and $H_{2}O_{2}$, which means its dependence on Damkohler number; nonequilibrium effect. This dependence was shown better in the region of higher global strain. Besides, the improvement of turbulence model is required to predict mean flow properties quantitatively in the radial direction.
The LES-based level-set flamelet model has been applied to analyze the turbulent propane/air premixed bluff-body flame with a highly wrinkled flame fronts. The present study has been motivated to investigate the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies. Special emphasis is given to study the effect of G equation filtering treatment on the precise structure of turbulent premixed flames as well as the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The level-set/flamelet model has been adopted to account for the effect of turbulence-flame interaction as well as to properly capture the flame front. Numerical results indicate that the present LES-based level-set flamelet approach has a capability to realistically simulate the highly non-stationary turbulent premixed flame.

It has been reported that propane non-premixed interacting flames are not extinguished even in 210m/s if eight small nozzles are arranged along the imaginary circle of 40 ~ 72 times the diameter of single nozzle. In this research, experiments were extended to the methane flame. Nine nozzles were used- eight was evenly located along the perimeter of the imaginary circle and one at the geometric center. The space between nozzles, s, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the center nozzle were considered. On the contrary to the propane non-premixed flame, small amount of fuel fed through the center nozzle makes the methane diffusion flame stable even at the choking conditions. In the laminar region, the flame at the center nozzle anchored the outer lifted flames.

The space between nozzles, s, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the center nozzle were considered. On the contrary to the propane non-premixed case, the maximum blowout velocity for the methane diffusion flame was achieved when small amount of fuel is supplied through the center nozzle and s/d equals around 21. In the laminar region, the flame attached at the center nozzle anchored the outer lifted flames.
NOx formation in turbulent flames is strongly coupled with temperature, superequilibrium concentration of O radical, and residence time. This implies that in order to accurately predict NO level, it is necessary to develop sophisticated models able to account for the complex turbulent combustion processes including turbulence/chemistry interaction and radiative heat transfer. The present study numerically investigates the turbulent nonpremixed hydrogen jet flames using the laminar flamelet model. Flamelet library is constructed by solving the modified Peters equations and the turbulent combustion model is extended to nonadiabatic flame by introducing the enthalpy defect. The effects of turbulent fluctuation are taken into account by the presumed joint PDFs for mixture fraction, scalar dissipation rate, and enthalpy defect. The predictive capability of the present model has been validated against the detailed experimental data. Effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.

The RPV(Reaction Progress Variable) combustion model has been applied to numerically investigate the effects of Damkohler number on the superequilibrium concentration and flame structure in the nonpremixed turbulent flames. Computations are performed for the two turbulent jet flames of CO/H$_2$/N$_2$(40/30/30 volume percent) having the same jet Reynolds number of 16,700 but different nozzle diameters(4.58mm and 7.72mm). The detailed discussions have been made for the interaction between fluid dynamics and chemistry in the flame field.

High efficient and environment friendly combustion technologies are used to be operated an extreme condition, which results in unintended flame instability such as extinction and oscillation. The use of electromagnetic energy is one of methods to enhance the combustion stability and a microwave as electromagnetic wave is receiving increased attention recently because of its high performance and low-cost system. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by microwave. Micro jet was introduced to simulate the high velocity of industrial combustor. The results show that micro jet flames had three different modes with increasing oxidizer velocity; attached yellow flame, lifted flame, and lifted partially premixed flame. As a microwave was induced to flames, the overall flame stability and blowout limit were extended with the higher microwave power. Especially the interaction between a flame and a microwave was shown clearly in the partially premixed flame, in which the lift-off height decreased and NOx emission measured in post flame region increased with increasing microwave power. It might be attributed to increase of reactivity due to the abundance of radical pool and the enhanced absorption to thermal energy.
