The stability of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames is investigated in terms of nozzle configuration shapes and kind of fuels. Four nozzle arrangements - cross 5, matrix 8, matrix 9 and circle 8 nozzles - are used in the experiment. There are many parameters affecting flame stability in multi-nozzle flames such as nozzle separation distance, fuel flowrates and nozzle configuration etc. Key factors to enhance blowout limit are the nozzle configuration and the existence of center nozzle. Even nozzle exit velocity equal 204 m/s, flame is not extinguished when there is not a center nozzle and s/d=15.3∼27.6 in matrix-8 and circular-8 configurations. At these conditions, recirculation of burnt gas is related with stability augmentation. Fuel mole fraction measurements using laser induced fluorescence reveal lifted flame base is not located at the stoichiometric contour.

The characteristics of nonpremixed interacting flames are investigated in the parameter of nozzle configuration and nozzle separation distane, s. Three nozzle arrangements - diamond 4 nozzle, linear 5 nozzle and cross 5 nozzle- are used. When s is about 10 nozzle diameter, flames lift from the nozzle at the highest fuel flowrate compared with the other s cases. Normally flames are extinguished at the lifted states. Flowrates when blowout occurs are affected by the nozzle configuration, nozzle seperation distance. Blowout flowrates for the diamond- or cross-shaped nozzle cases are parabolic function of s. For 5 cross nozzle case, flames extinguished at 3.3 times higher flowrate than that of single equivalent area nozzle. Turbulent liftoff heights are not function of flowrates for these cases.
The effects of nozzle arrangements, nozzle distances and fuel flowrates on the flame stabilities such as flame length, liftoff height and blowout characteristics are investigated experimentally. Three nozzle arrangements - diamond 4 nozzle, linear 5 nozzle, cross 5 nozzle- are used. Flame interactions result in the increase of the blowout flowrates and constant turbulent liftoff heights. The flames separated about 10 nozzle diameters are sustained as nozzle attached flames to the higher fuel flowrates than the other separation cases. Normally flames are extinguished at the lifted states. Blowout flowrates are affected by the nozzle configuration, nozzle seperation distance. Blowout flowrates for the diamond- or cross- shaped nozzle arrangements are parabolic function of nozzle distances. Maximum blowout flowrates for the 5 nozzle configuration case except linear one is about 2.9 times that of single equivalent nozzle case. Turbulent liftoff heights are not function of flowrates for the interacting flames.
Dynamic structures of unsteady $CH_4$/Air jet diffusion flames with flame-vortex interaction were numerically investigated. A time-dependent, axisymmetric computational model was adopted for this calculation. Two step global reaction mechanism which considers 6 species, was used to calculate the reaction rates. The predicted results including gravitational effect show that the large outer vortices and the small inner vortex street can be well simulated without any additional disturbances in the downstream of nozzle tip. It was found that the temperature and species concentrations had various values for the same mixture fraction in flame-vortex interaction region. This unsteady jet flame configuration accompanying flame-vortex interaction is expected to give good implications for the structure of turbulent flames.
The multi-environment probability density function model has been applied to simulate the turbulent stratified premixed flames. The direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM) has been adopted to solve the transport PDF equation due to its computational efficiency and robustness. Computations are made for the non-swirling turbulent stratified premixed flames including SWB1, SWB5 and SWB9. The numerical results obtained in this study are precisely compared with experimental data in terms of axial velocity, unconditional means and conditional means for scalar field including temperature and species mass fraction.
The effects of interaction between partially premixed and premixed swirl flames on CO and NOx emissions were experimentally investigated using a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for a micro-gas turbine. Under the condition of constant angle ($45^{\circ}$) for outer swirl vane, the angle and direction of inner swirl vane installed for a partially premixed flame were varied as main parameters with a constant fuel flow rate for each nozzle. It was found that for all conditions, CO and NOx emissions were measured below 4 ppm and 15 ppm at 15% $O_2$, respectively, in a wide range of equivalence ratio (0.6~0.9). For co-swirl flows, CO emission increased dramatically as the angle of inner swirl vane increased from $15^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$ near lean-flammability limit (i.e. equivalence ratio of 0.5). On the other hand, the case of swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ provided the lowest NOx emission at higher equivalence ratios than 0.6. For counter-swirl flows, the case of swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ extended the lean-flammability limit but higher NOx emissions were found compared to those of co-swirl flows. These results could be inferred by interaction between (inner) partially premixed and (outer) premixed swirl flames. However, these estimations were not clear yet because there was insufficient data on turbulent flow structure and fuel-air mixing in the present experimental approach.
The Blow-off characteristics of LPG/air lean pre-mixed flames were experimentally investigated using a double and a multiple concentric coflow burners. Experiments were conducted to understand the effects of recirculation motion, thermal interaction between flames, and stratified flame configuration. Here, the stratified premixed flame is a "new concept" of a flame that sequentially contains fuel rich, stoichiometric, and fuel lean reaction zones in a flame. The blow-off from a lean premixed flame was significantly suppressed with recirculation motion. The recirculation motion by itself, however, was not sufficient to prevent the blow-off when the equivalence ratio became low. The existence of a inner premixed flame could also help to prevent the blow-off of lean premixed flame; however, the blow-off suppression effect was rather diminished by weakened recirculation motion with the presence of inner flame. The inner flame could be separated from an outer flame on a multiple concentric coflow burner, causing recirculation motion as well as thermal interaction between flames to become effective; therefore, the blow-off was further suppressed. The lean premixed flame could be stabilized with a fuel rich premixed flames that was produced with the supply of fuel through an inner nozzle. The penetration of lean premixed gas from outside into the fuel stream produced a lifted rich premixed flame. Chemiluminescence images of OH, CH, and $C_2$ radicals confirmed the structure of a stratified premixed flame. The stable premixed flames could be obtained at the very fuel lean condition by applying the stratified premixed flame concept.

This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.
The morphology and size distribution of chromium oxides and the concentration measurement of atomic arsenic have been studied in laminar diffusion flames. Nitrogen was added to vary flame temperatures in hydrogen flames. Ethene flames were used in order to investigate the potential for interaction between the soot aerosol that is formed in these flames and the chromium aerosol. Two sources of chromium compounds were introduced: chromium nitrate and chromium hexacarbonyl. A detailed investigation of the morphology was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amounts of Cr(VI) and total Cr were determined by a spectrophotometric method and by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, respectively. Also, LIF was used for the measurement of atomic arsenic, which was excited at 197.2 nm and was detected at 249.6 nm. Results showed that the morphology of the particles varied with the flame temperature and with the chromium source. The particles were characterized by porous structures, cenospheres and agglomerated dense particles when chromium nitrate solution was added to the flames. At low to moderate temperatures, porous sintered cenospheric structures were formed, in some cases with a blow hole. At higher temperatures, an agglomerated cluster which was composed of loosely sintered submicron particles was observed. It was also found that the emission of Cr(VI) from the undiluted $H_2$ flame was more than 10 times larger than in the 50% $H_2$ / 50% $N_2$ flame on a mass basis. Single point LIF measurement of atomic arsenic indicated that arsenic exist only in the low temperature, fuel rich region.
This study has numerically modeled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted syngas flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role of stabilizing the turbulent lifted flames. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Numerical results indicate clearly that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner. Computations are made for the wide range of the syngas chemical composition and the dilution level at two pressure conditions (1.0, 5.0 bar). Numerical results indicate that the lifted height in the LSB is increased by decreasing the H2 percentage and increasing the dilution level at the given equivalence ratio. It is also found that the flashback is occurred for the hydrogen composition higher than 80% at the equivalence ratio, 0.8. However, at the syngas composition range in the IGCC system, the stable lean-premixed lifted flames are formed at the low-swirl burner.
