Experimental studies were carried out in an explosion chamber to investigate the influences of multiple cylinder obstacles on local flame propagation. The chamber dimension is 235 mm in height with a $1,000{\times}950\;mm^2$ rectangular cross section and a large vent area of $1,000{\times}320\;mm^2$. Multiple cylinder bars with obstruction ratio of 30% were used. In order to examine the interaction between the propagating flames and the obstacles, temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed video camera. The propagation behaviour of local flame fronts around the left obstacle was analyzed in terms of two different methods such as the incremental burnt area divided by the flame front length and the average of the local propagation velocity determined at each point along the flame front. It was found that two methods give good consistency.
This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-e model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using generalized cubic equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the effects of swirl number on flame structure of supercritical kerosene/LOx double swirl coaxial injector.

A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.

For the non-premixed interacting jet flames, it has been reported that if eight small nozzles are arranged along the circle of $40{\sim}72$ times the diameter of single jet, the flames are not extinguished even in 200m/s. In this research, experiments were extended to the partially premixed cases to reduce both flame temperature and NOx emission. Nine nozzles were used- eight was evenly located along the perimeter of the imaginary circle and one at the geometric centre. The space between nozzles, S, the equivalence ratio, ${\phi}$, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the centre nozzle were considered. Normally, flame was lifted and flame base was located inside the imaginary circle made by the nozzle. As nozzles went away from each other, blowout velocity increased and then decreased. The maximum blowout velocity diminished with the addition of air to the fuel stream. When the fuel and/or oxidizer were not fed through the centre nozzle, the maximum blowout velocity obtained by varying S and ${\phi}$ was around 160m/s. Optimum nozzle separation distance at which peak blowout velocity obtained also decreased with ${\phi}$ decrease. Flame base became leaner as approaching to the blowout. It seemed that lots of air was supplied to the flame stabilizing region by the entrainment and partially premixing. To approve this idea and to enhance the blowout velocity, fuel was supplied to the centre region. With the small amount of fuel through the centre nozzle, partially premixed flame could be sustained till sonic velocities. It seemed that the stabilizing mechanism in partially premixed interacting flame was different from that of non-premixed case because one was stabilized by the fuel supply through the centre nozzle but the other destabilized.
In order to realistically represent the complex turbulence-chemistry interaction at the partially premixed turbulent lifted flames encountered in the gas turbine combustors, the combined conserved-scalar/level-set flamelet approach has been adopted. The parallel unstructured-grid finite-volume method has been developed to maintain the geometric flexibility and computational efficiency for the solution of the physically and geometrically complex flows. Special emphasis is given to the swirl effects on the combustion characteristics of the lean-premixed gas turbine combustor. Numerical results suggest that the present approach is capable of realistically simulating the combustion characteristics for the lean-premixed gas turbine engines and the lifted turbulent jet flame with a vitiated coflow.
For the non-premixed interacting jet flames, it has been reported that if eight small nozzles are arranged along the circle of 40 $^{\sim}$ 72 times the diameter of single jet, the flames are not extinguished over 2oom/s. The maximum blowout velocity diminished with the addition of air to the fuel stream. The conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been implemented in context with the unstructured-grid finite-volume method which efficiently handle the physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. The validation cases include a turbulent nonpremixed CO/$H_2$/$N_2$ Jet flame and a turbulent nonpremixed $H_2$/CO flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. In terms of mean flame field, minor species and NO formation, numerical results has the overall agreement with expermental data. The detailed discussion has been made for the turbulence-chemistry interaction and NOx formation characteristics as well as the comparative performance for CMC and flamelet model.
This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the transcritical mixing and reacting flow processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using SRK (Souve-Redlich-Kwong) equation of state model. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent non-premixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the real fluid effects and the precise structure of the transcritical cryogenic liquid nitrogen jet and gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen coaxial jet flame.

Acoustic excitations were imposed to coaxial air jet of non-premixed jet flame with hydrogen gaseous injected axially in the center of the flow. The frequencies of excitation were three dominant resonant frequencies at 1L, 2L, 3L. modes including specially 514 Hz (2L-mode) which was estimated theoretically as longitudinal mode of combustor characteristics. The mixing enhancement by acoustic forcing has been investigated quantitatively using PLIF and PIV. The effect of acoustic excitation on combustion process was significant to enhance mixing rate that coincides with specific resonant frequencies. And the behavior of vortex-interaction on flame structure was a good evidence to investigate the phenomenon of shear/mixing layer of fuel-air jet structure. The results obtained in this study concludes that generated streamwise vortex by acoustic excitation has a potential to enhance the mixing rate and abating NOx emissions.
