We propose a method where interaction energies and force components are calculated separately for each residue of biomolecules. It is found that the correlation factors obtained from the analysis of five types of force terms and one interaction energy term (main chain self-energy) can be used to predict a mutants free energy difference relative to wild type.(omitted)

Piezoelectric actuators have long been recognised for use in aerospace structures for control of structural shape. This paper looks at active control of the swept shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction using smart flap actuators. The actuators are manufactured by bonding piezoelectric material to an inert substrate to control the bleed/suction rate through a plenum chamber. The cavity provides communication of signals across the shock, allowing rapid thickening of the boundary layer approaching the shock, which splits into a series of weaker shocks forming a lambda shock foot, reducing wave drag. Active control allows optimum control of the interaction, as it would be capable of positioning the control region around the original shock position and unimorph tip deflection, hence mass transfer rates. The actuators are modelled using classical composite material mechanics theory, as well as a finite element-modelling program (ANSYS 5.7).
The seismic analysis of structures without applying the effects of soil can undermine functional objectives of structure so that it can affect all the desired purposes at the design and control stages of the structure. In this research, employing OpenSees and MATLAB software simultaneously and developing a definite three-dimensional finite element model of a high-rise concrete structure, designed using performance-based plastic design approach, the performance of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Active Mass Damper (AMD) is both examined and compared. Moreover some less noted aspects such as nonlinear interaction of soil and structure, uplift, nonlinear behavior of structure and structural torsion have received more attention. For this purpose, the analysis of time history on the structural model has been performed under 22 far-field accelerogram records. Examining a full range of all structural seismic responses, including lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, lost plastic energy, number of plastic hinges, story shear force and uplift. The results indicate that TMD performs better than AMD except for lateral displacement and inter-story drift to control other structural responses. Because on the one hand, nonlinear structural parameters and soil-structure interaction have been added and on the other hand, the restriction on the control force applied that leads up to saturation phenomenon in the active control system affect the performance of AMD. Moreover, the control force applied by structural control system has created undesirable acceleration and shear force in the structure.
Here we consider the evaluation of the the dynamic component of the second order force due to wave diffraction by a circular cylinder analytically and numerically. The cylinder is fixed, vertical, surface piercing in water of finite uniform depth. The formulation of the wave-structure interaction is based on the assumption of a homogeneous, ideal, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. The nonlinearity in the wave-structure interaction problem arises from the free surface boundary conditions, namely, dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions. We expand the velocity potential and free surface elevation functions in terms of a small parameter and then consider the second order diffraction problem. After deriving the pressure using Bernoulli's equation, we obtain the analytical expression for the dynamic component of the second order force on the cylinder by integrating the pressure over the wetted surface. The computation of the dynamic force component requires only the first order velocity potential. Numerical results for the dynamic force component are presented.
This paper presents the position-based force control application of a mobile manipulator. The mobile manipulator consists of two six DOF manipulators and a mobile robot. Kinematics of the robot is analyzed and simulated to validate the analysis. A position-based force control technique is applied to the robot by adding an outer loop to interact with the environment. Experimental studies of force control applications of robot arm and interaction with a human operator are conducted. Experimental results show that the robot arm is well regulated to follow the desired force.
The study deals with physical modeling of a typical three storeyed building frame supported by a pile group of four piles ($2{\times}2$) embedded in cohesive soil mass using three dimensional finite element analysis. For the purpose of modeling, the elements such as beams, slabs and columns, of the superstructure frame; and that of the pile foundation such as pile and pile cap are descretized using twenty noded isoparametric continuum elements. The interface between the pile and the soil is idealized using sixteen node isoparametric surface element. The soil elements are modeled using eight nodes, nine nodes and twelve node continuum elements. The present study considers the linear elastic behaviour of the elements of superstructure and substructure (i.e., foundation). The soil is assumed to behave non-linear. The parametric study is carried out for studying the effect of soil- structure interaction on response of the frame on the premise of sub-structure approach. The frame is analyzed initially without considering the effect of the foundation (non-interaction analysis) and then, the pile foundation is evaluated independently to obtain the equivalent stiffness; and these values are used in the interaction analysis. The spacing between the piles in a group is varied to evaluate its effect on the interactive behaviour of frame in the context of two embedment depth ratios. The response of the frame included the horizontal displacement at the level of each storey, shear force in beams, axial force in columns along with the bending moments in beams and columns. The effect of the soil- structure interaction is observed to be significant for the configuration of the pile groups and in the context of non-linear behaviour of soil.
A numerical study using nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of isolated reinforced concrete walls subjected to combined axial force and in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. For a nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. Through numerical studies, the internal force distribution in the cross-section is idealized, and then a new design method, different from the existing methods based on the plane section hypothesis was developed. According to the proposed method, variations in the interaction curve of the in-plane bending moment and axial force depends on the range of the permissible axial force per unit length, that is determined by a given amount of out-of-plane bending moment. As the out-of-plane bending moment increases, the interaction curve shrinks, indicating a decrease in the ultimate strength. The proposed method is then compared with an existing method, using the plane section hypothesis. Compared with the proposed method, the existing method overestimates the ultimate strength for the walls subjected to low out-of-plane bending moments, while it underestimates the ultimate strength for walls subject to high out-of-plane bending moments. The proposed method can address the out-of-plane local behavior of the individual wall segments that may govern the ultimate strength of the entire wall.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the root cause of adhesion of silica and ceria particles during Poly-Si, TEOS, and SiN CMP process, respectively. The zeta-potentials of abrasive particles and wafers were observed negative surface charges in the alkaline solutions. SAC and STI patterned wafers have intermediate values of their composition surface's zeta potentials. The theoretical interaction force and adhesion force of silica and ceria particle were calculated in solution with acidic, neutral and alkaline pH. A stronger attractive force was calculated for silica and ceria particles on wafers in acidic solutions than in alkaline solutions. The theoretical interaction forces of the SAC and STI patterned wafers have intermediate values of their constitution wafer's values. The adhesion forces is observed lower values in alkaline solutions than in acidic solutions. And the ceria particle has lower adhesion than that of the silica particle.
It is well known that the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall affect ship manoeuvring motions. In this paper, the calculation method based on the slender body theory for estimation of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall is investigated. The numerical simulations on hydrodynamic interaction force acting on a ship in the proximity of bank wall are carried out by using this theoretical method. The theoretical method used in this paper will be useful for practical prediction of ship manoeuvrability at the initial stage of design, for discussion of marine traffic control system and for automatic control system of ship in confined waterways.
In this paper, elastic and plastic adhesion index was very important in deciding adhesive characteristics and varying elastic and plastic index, dimensionless load and pull-off force were analyzed and simulated. Finally, using AFM, experimental surface roughness parameters of substrates and pull-off force between tip and substrates were produced. Using these values, pull-off forces were calculated and were compared with experimental pull-off forces. Through simulation and experiment, it was found that interaction of asperity also had very important influence on adhesive contact.
