ONE TYPE OF EDDY DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTHEASTERN KUROSHIO BRANCH

  • Some features of vertical structure of the frontal interaction zone of the warm Kuroshio Current and cold Oyashio Current are known from 1930 from analysis of ship data. Ship data however do not allow carrying out the area detailed survey opposite to satellite infrared (IR) observations which possess by high spatial and temporal resolution. Analysis of NOAA AVHRR IR images demonstrated that process of formation and development of the Kuroshio warm core rings is highly complex. They are formed as a result of development of anticyclonic meanders of the warm Kuroshio waters and spin off them from the current. Joint analysis of thermal infrared images and altimetry data has also indicated that interaction of eddies to the frontal zone plays a crucial role in formation of large eddies moving to the Southern Kuril region.

2세 영아-교사간 상호작용에 관한 문화기술적 연구 (An Ethnographic Study on Interaction Between Toddlers and Teachers)

  • The purpose of this ethnographic study was to observe and understand interactions of toddlers and teachers in context. Specific questions were "What are the motives and features of the interactions between toddlers and teacher?" Subjects were twenty 2-year-old daycare children and their teachers. Methods covered 11 weeks of interviews and participatory observation. The major findings were that the interactions between toddlers and teachers was mainly initiated by toddlers and consist of physiological and emotional needs, conflict mediation and participation in play. As toddler get to the age of self-recognition but still need adult's assistance, the co-existence of dependence and independence was evident. Children used a variety of verbal and non-verbal signals with both positive and non-positive overtons.

  • A scanning electron microscope(SEM) is a system that visualizes complex surface features. The resolution of SEM is affected by each of equipment components. In this study, we examined the effects of the four factors including the beam current, magnification, voltage and working distance. A statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the main and interaction effects. For a systematic characterization, a $2^4$ full factorial experiment was conducted. The $R^2$ of constructed statistical model was 88.9%. The main effect revealed that the current and working distance are dominant factors. Of the interactions, those between the current and voltage yielded the highest interaction. 3D plots generated from the model were used to explore various parameter effects.

Protein-Protein Interaction Analysis of Corticotropin - Releasing Hormone Receptor 1 with Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone and Sauvagine

  • Corticotropin - releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1) forms an integral part of the pathophysiology of disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, anxiety, addiction, and depression. Hence it is essential to look for new, potent and structure-specific inhibitors of CRHR1. We have analysed the protein-protein interaction complexes of the CRHR1 receptor with its native ligand CRF and full agonist Sauvagine. The structure of Sauvagine was predicted using homology modelling. We have identified that the residues TYR253, ASP254, GLU256, GLY265, ARG1014 and LY1060 are important in the formation of protein-protein complex formation. Future studies on these residues could throw light on the crucial structural features required for the formation of CRHR1-inhibitor complex and in studies that try to solve the structural complexities of CRHR1.

Finite Element Analysis of Laser-Generated Ultrasound for Characterizing Surface-Breaking Cracks

  • A finite element method was used to simulate the wave propagation of laser-generated ultrasound and its interaction with surface breaking cracks in an elastic material. Thermoelastic laser line source on the material surface was approximated as a shear dipole and loaded as nodal forces in the plane-strain finite element (FE) model. The shear dipole- FE model was tested for the generation of ultrasound on the surface with no defect. The model was found to generate the Rayleigh surface wave. The model was then extended to examine the interaction of laser generated ultrasound with surface-breaking cracks of various depths. The crack-scattered waves were monitored to size the crack depth. The proposed model clearly reproduced the experimentally observed features that can be used to characterize the presence of surface-breaking cracks.

LOCALLY ENRICHED QUADTREE GRID NUMERICAL MODEL FOR NEARSHORE CIRCULATION IN THE SURF ZONE

  • This paper describes an adaptive quadtree-based 2DH wave-current interaction model which is able to predict wave breaking, shoaling, refraction, diffraction, wave-current interaction, set-up and set-down, mixing processes (turbulent diffusion), bottom frictional effects, and movement of the land-water interface at the shoreline. The wave period-and depth-averaged governing equations are discretised explictly by means of an Adams-Bashforth second-order finite difference technaique on adaptive hierarchical staggered quadtree grids. Grid adaptation is achieved through seeding points distributed according to flow criteria(e.g. local current gradients). Results are presented for nearshore circulation at a sinusoidal beach. Enrichment permits refined modelling of important localised flow features.

Reaction of Methanol and Methyl Iodide on ZnO(0001) and ZnO(11-20) Single Crystal Surfaces

  • The adsorption and reactions of methanol and methyl iodide on ZnO(0001) and ZnO(11-20) single crystal surfaces have been investigated using the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The interaction of methanol and methyl iodide with ZnO is stronger on the polar ZnO(0001) surface than the non-polar ZnO(11-20) surface. On ZnO(0001), methanol is decomposed to produce formaldehyde and hydrogen. Two desorption features of formaldehyde and hydrogen are observed at around 500 and 580 K. The interaction of methanol and pre-adsorbed hydrogen has been also investigated. The reaction mechanism of methanol on ZnO will be proposed.

  • This paper shows the results of atomistic modeling for the interaction between spherical nano abrasive and substrate in chemical mechanical polishing processes. Atomistic modeling was achieved from 2-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations using the Lennard-Jones 12-6 potentials. The abrasive dynamics was modeled by three cases, such as slipping, rolling, and rotating. Simulation results showed that the different dynamics of the abrasive results the different features of surfaces. This model can be extended to investigate the 3-dimensional chemical mechanical polishing processes.

  • In common approaches, bridge dynamics under wind action is analyzed by modeling the interaction between fluid and structure by means of transient wind loads acting over the structure itself. Amid various possible manners to describe such types of loads, a representation based on families of 'indicial functions' is adopted here. The aim is to investigate its flexibility to capture the main features of wind-bridge interaction. A set of coefficients is involved in indicial functions. The values that one may attribute to them suffer uncertainties coming from experimental errors affecting data. Here, the sensitivity of a 2-DOF schematic model to the variations of these coefficients is investigated at fixed values of dynamic derivatives and for various types of indicial functions. It is shown how parameter variations influence phase portraits.

  • In this numerical approach, strut-placed supersonic annular flow is examined. The geometrical variations of strut cause strong influence on flowfield structures. The geometrical variations are as follows, swept effect, attack angle effect, variation of leading edge shape. These changed features such as velocity structure, pressure structure, shock-boundary layer interaction are compared and analyzed according to each geometrical configuration.
