  • This paper presents a low-complexity algorithm for an H.264/AVC encoder. The proposed motion estimation scheme determines the best coding mode for a given macroblock (MB) by finding motion-blurred MBs; identifying, before motion estimation, an early selection of MBs; and hence saving processing time for these MBs. It has been observed that human vision is more sensitive to the movement of well-structured objects than to the movement of randomly structured objects. This study analyzed permissible perceptual distortions and assigned a larger inter-mode value to the regions that are perceptually less sensitive to human vision. Simulation results illustrate that the algorithm can reduce the computational complexity of motion estimation by up to 47.16% while maintaining high compression efficiency.

  • International standard specification, H.264/SVC improved from H.264/AVC, is set up so as to promote free use of huge multimedia data in various channel environments.;H.264/AVC is a international standard speicification for video compression, adopted and commercialized as standard for DMB broadcasting by JVT of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. SVC standard uses 'intra/inter prediction' in AVC as well as 'inter-layer intra prediction', 'inter-layer motion prediction' and 'inter-layer residual prediction' to improve efficiency of encoding. Among prediction technologies, 'inter-layer intra prediction' is to use co-located block of up sampled sublevels as a prediction signal. At this time, application of interpolation is one of the most important factors to determine encoding efficiency. SVC's currently using poly-phase FIR filter of 4-tap and 2-tap respectively to luma components. This paper is written for the purpose of analyzing encoding performance according to the interpolation. For this purpose, we applied poly-phase FIR filter of '2-tap', '4-tap' and '6-tap' respectively to luma components and then measured bit-rate, PNSR and running time of interpolation filter. We're expecting that the analysis results of this paper will be utilized for effective application of interpolation filter. SVC standard uses 'intra/inter prediction' in AVC as well as 'inter-layer intra prediction', 'inter-layer motion prediction' and 'inter-layer residual prediction' to improve efficiency of encoding.

  • This paper proposes an efficient hardware architecture for high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is the next generation video compression standard. It adopts several new coding techniques to reduce the bit rate by about 50% compared with the previous one. Unlike the previous H.264/AVC 6-tap interpolation filter, in HEVC, a one-dimensional seven-tap and eight-tap filter is adopted for luma interpolation, but it also increases the complexity and gate area in hardware implementation. In this paper, we propose a parallel architecture to boost the interpolation performance, achieving a luma $4{\times}4$ block interpolation in 2-4 cycles. The proposed architecture contains shared operations reducing the gate count increased due to the parallel architecture. This makes the area efficiency better than the previous design, in the best case, with the performance improved by about 75.15%. It is synthesized with the MagnaChip $0.18{\mu}m$ library and can reach the maximum frequency of 200 MHz.

  • This paper proposes a simplified generalized residual prediction (GRP) that reduces the computational complexity of spatial scalability in scalable high efficiency video coding (SHVC). GRP is a coding tool to improve the inter prediction by adding a residual signal to the inter predictor. The residual signal was created by carrying out motion compensation (MC) of both the enhancement layer (EL) and up-sampled reference layer (RL) with the motion vector (MV) of the EL. In the MC process, interpolation of the EL and the up-sampled RL are required when the MV of the EL has sub-pel accuracy. Because the up-sampled RL has few high frequency components, interpolation of the up-sampled RL does not give significantly new information. Therefore, the proposed method reduces the computational complexity of the GRP by skipping the interpolation of the up-sampled RL. The experiment on SHVC software (SHM-2.0) showed that the proposed method reduces the decoding time by 10 % compared to conventional GRP. The BD-rate loss of the proposed method was as low as 1.0% on the top of SHM-2.0.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-view coding(MVC) algorithm with considering view scalability. The proposed algorithm has a high compression efficiency by reducing inter-view redundancy through inter-view decomposition, and adaptively reconstructs a multi-view video from an encoded bit stream. Furthermore, a reference view can be decoded by a traditional H.264/AVC, and the other views are adaptively decoded at the receiver by filtering to support view scalability. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performed better than the conventional H.264 codec even though it offers the view scalability.

  • Multi-view video coding (MVC) based on H.264/AVC encodes multiple views efficiently by using a prediction scheme that exploits inter-view correlation among multiple views. However, with the increase of the number of views and use of inter-view prediction among views, total encoding time will be increased in multiview video coding. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision using both MB(Macroblock)-based region segmentation information corresponding to each view in multiple views and global disparity vector among views in order to reduce encoding time. The proposed method achieves on average 40% reduction of total encoding time with the objective video quality degradation of about 0.04 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by using joint multi-view video model (JMVM) 4.0 that is the reference software of the multiview video coding standard.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AVC video coding standard employs new coding tools compared with existing coding standards. However, due to these new coding tools, the complexity of K264/AVC standard encoder is greatly increased. Specifically, the inter/intra mode decision method using RDO(rate-distortion optimization) technique is one of the most complex parts in H.264/AVC. In this paper, we focus on the complexity reduction in macroblock mode decision. In the proposed method, we reduce the complexity of the $4{\times}4$ mode decision process using $4{\times}4$ simple square filters, and using spatial block correlation method. Additionally, exploiting the best mode of sub_macroblock in $Inter8{\times}8$ mode, we proposed an algorithm to eliminate some intra modes in current macroblock mode decision process. In addition, we employed a method to raise the probability to select SKIP, $Intra16{\times}16$, and $Intra16{\times}16$ modes which usually show low complexity and low bitrate compared with other modes. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm reduce the encoding time by maximum 83% of total, and reduce the bitrate of the overall sequences by $8{\sim}10%$ on the average compared with existing coding methods.

  • To achieve flexible visual content adaption for multimedia communications, the ISO/IEC MPEG & ITU-T VCEG form the JVT to develop SVC amendment for the H.264/AVC standard. JVT uses inter-layer prediction as well as inter prediction and intra prediction that are provided in H.264/AVC to remove the redundancy among layers. The main goal consists of designing inter-layer prediction tools that enable the usage of as much as possible base layer information to improve the rate-distortion efficiency of the enhancement layer. But inter layer prediction causes the computational complexity to be increased. In this paper, we proposed an efficient residual prediction. In order to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the high coding efficiency. The proposed residual prediction uses modified interpolation that is defined in H.264/AVC SVC.
