  • This study has analyzed the international trade flow of medical devices in Korea, China, and U.S. more theoretically and systematically through a mutual connection of the medical device export structure of Korea and the import structure of China and U.S. organically, with an intensity approach on the bilateral international trade flow. Also, it is meaningful to find a solution to boost exports of Korea to China and U.S.. Therefore in this study, we recognize the importance of the medical device market in China and U.S., which is the main competition for Korea and its market, and look into the trade situation of these three countries. We also look into the relative market stream and the trade intensity of the main medical devices in Korea, China and U.S., and seek measures for the steady growth of the medical device market in these three countries.

  • This study presents a change-point in the 30 years (1976-2005) time series of the annual and the heavy precipitation characteristics (amount, days and intensity) averaged over South Korea using Bayesian approach. The criterion for the heavy precipitation used in this study is 80 mm/day. Using non-informative priors, the exact Bayes estimators of parameters and unknown change-point are obtained. Also, the posterior probability and 90% highest posterior density credible intervals for the mean differences between before and after the change-point are examined. The results show that a single change-point in the precipitation intensity and the heavy precipitation characteristics has occurred around 1996. As the results, the precipitation intensity and heavy precipitation characteristics have clearly increased after the change-point. However, the annual precipitation amount and days show a statistically insignificant single change-point model. These results are consistent with earlier works based on a simple linear regression model.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the conservatism in the design of APR1400 (Advanced Pressurized water Reactor 1400 designed by KHNP) reactor internals component, the LSS (Lower Support Structure). Re-engineering of the LSS is done based on the system design condition data and applicable ASME code that was used for the original APR1400 design. Systems engineering approach is applied to design the LSS of APR1400 without refering APR1400 LSS dimensional parameters and tries to verify important design parameters of APR1400 LSS as well as the validity of the re-engineering design process as independent verification method of reactor component design. Systems engineering approach applied in this study following V-model approach. The re-engineered LSS design showed more than enough conservatism for static loading case. The maximum deflection of LSS is under 1mm (calculated value is 0.25mm) from 4000 mm diameter of LSS. Hence the deflection can be ignored in other reactor internals for structural integrity assessment. Especially the effect of LSS deflection on fuel assembly can be minimized and which is one of the main requirements of LSS design. It also showed that the maximum stress intensity is 2.36MPa for the allowable stress intensity of 60.1 MPa. The stress resulted from the static load is also very small compared to the maximum allowable stress intensity, hence there is more than enough conservatism in the LSS design.

  • Structural integrity assessment of piping components is of paramount important for remaining life prediction, residual strength evaluation and for in-service inspection planning. For accurate prediction of these, a reliable fracture parameter is essential. One of the fracture parameters is stress intensity factor (SIF), which is generally preferred for high strength materials, can be evaluated by using linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. To employ available analytical and numerical procedures for fracture analysis of piping components, it takes considerable amount of time and effort. In view of this, an alternative approach to analytical and finite element analysis, a model based on relevance vector machine (RVM) is developed to predict SIF of part through crack of a piping component under fatigue loading. RVM is based on probabilistic approach and regression and it is established based on Bayesian formulation of a linear model with an appropriate prior that results in a sparse representation. Model for SIF prediction is developed by using MATLAB software wherein 70% of the data has been used for the development of RVM model and rest of the data is used for validation. The predicted SIF is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding analytical solution, and can be used for damage tolerant analysis of structural components.

  • In [15] they introduced a new finite element method for accurate numerical solutions of Poisson equations with corner singularities, which is useful for the problem with known stress intensity factor. They consider the Poisson equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, compute the finite element solution using standard FEM and use the extraction formula to compute the stress intensity factor, then they pose a PDE with a regular solution by imposing the nonhomogeneous boundary condition using the computed stress intensity factor, which converges with optimal speed. From the solution we could get accurate solution just by adding the singular part. This approach works for the case when we have the accurate stress intensity factor. In this paper we consider Poisson equations with mixed boundary conditions and show the method depends the accrucy of the stress intensity factor by considering two algorithms.

  • In [8] they introduced a new finite element method for accurate numerical solutions of Poisson equations with corner singularities, which is useful for the problem with known stress intensity factor. From the solution they could get accurate solution just by adding the singular part. This approach works for the case when we have the reasonably accurate stress intensity factor. In this paper we consider Poisson equations defined on a domain with a concave corner with Neumann boundary conditions. First we compute the stress intensity factor using the extraction formular, then find the regular part of the solution and the solution.

  • Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) phase errors are normally assessed from the Fourier transform of the interference intensity data in the frequency domain method. However it is possible to identify the phases directly from the intensity data if one adopts a trial-and-error method. Since the functional form of the intensity profile is known, the intensities can be calculated theoretically by assuming arbitrary phase errors. Then we decide the phases that give the best fit to the experimental data. We verified this method by a simulation. We calculated the intensities for an artificial AWG which is given arbitrary phases and amplitudes. Then we extracted the phases and amplitudes from the intensity data by using our trial-and-error method. The extracted values are in good agreement with the originally given values. This approach yields better results than the analysis using Fourier transforms.

  • Computational speed plays key role in background subtraction and shadow detection, because those are only preprocessing steps of a moving object segmentation, tracking and activity recognition. A color intensity variation based approach fastly detect a moving object and extract shadow in a image sequences. The moving object is subtracted from background using meanmax, meanmin thresholds and shadow is detected by decrease limit and correspondence thresholds. The proposed approach relies on the ability to represent shadow cast impact by offline experiment dataset on sub grouped RGB color space.

  • Human have a notable ability to recognize faces, which is one of the most common visual feature in our environment. In regarding face pattern, just like other natural object, a geometrical interpretation of face is difficult to achieve. In this paper, we present wavelet based approach to extract the face features. Proposed approach is similar to the feature based scheme, where the feature is derived from the intensity data without detecting any knowledge of the significant feature. Topological graphs are involved to represent some relations between facial features. In our experiments, proposed approach is less sensitive to the intensity variation.
