  • We developed a low cost digital X-Ray image capturing system using a CCD camera, instead of using the high cost image plate and image intensifier. In order to reduce the system volume, we directly made the dark box shorter than the previous model. Using the graphic language, we developed a program in order for post-processing the images captured by the CCD camera. This program improves the image resolving power.

  • The image intensifier is the key component which determines the imaging characteristics in a fluoroscopic imaging system. A system performance program for clinical evaluation of two image intensifiers, that is simple, non-invasive and time effective, was described. Tests were grouped into three headings: x-ray generator, image quality, and collimation. For the x-ray generator, the kVp accuracy and the automatic exposure control operation were compared. Low- and high-contrast resolution measurements, and mesh pattern study belong to the image quality tests and those tests were performed for the video monitor and photospot images. For the collimation, usable field diameter and image distortion of image intensifiers were measured and quantified. The procedures and the results are hoped to be used for the clinical evaluation of system performance and/or acceptance tests for image intensifiers.

Development and Design of the Optical System of a Night Scope (Night Scope 광학계의 설계 및 개발)

  • We tried to design and manufacture a night scope which is used in the leisure sports field. The whole system consists of an IR light source part, an objective lens part, an intensifier tube part and an eye_piece lens part. We designed an objective lens part to the infinite object imaging optical-system with 80mm focal-length, 40mm effective-aperture and 14mm image-field-size of which the chromatic aberration is reduced by using materials of BK7 and FD4. The resolution of this system is about 25lines/mm at the 40% MTF value criterion. The eye_piece lens is adopted goods to be used commercially to save cost of production. The design technique which gets in this development will be utilized greatly in good developments of the dot, the sight and the day/night riflescope system at the hereafter.

  • The simulator which has a identical geometry with radiotherapy equipments, is a essential equipment to accomplish optimized radiotherapy plan through simulation by using diagnostic low energy X-ray. A Radiotherapy simulator has a combined technology from the therapeutic and diagnostic radiology and needs a periodical test for mechanical and optical properties, X-ray generator, image intensifier of simulator to keep the proper maintenance and radiation safety. Hence, tests were done and classified as i) mechanical and optical parameter for the gantry, collimator, and couch ii) key performance of the X-ray generator such as a kVp, mAs, and timer iii) performance of the image intensifier such as a resolution and contrast for three kinds of simulator, common use in clinic. The above result of tests will be applied to the acceptance test and periodical quality assurance procedure.

  • Accurate localization of target lesion is required to protect normal peripheral tissue and irradiate exactly to tumors in stereotactic radiosurgery(SRS). Digital angiography is one of the most effective diagnostic tools to detect and identify the target tumors. However, it shows pincushion distortion due to the characteristics of the image intensifier. We have implemented a simulation study for the correction of distortion using the geometric transformation. Phantom images were produced transformation. In conclusion, the geometric transformation could effectively be used for the pincushion distortion of image intensifier and there was no significant different between two methods indicating 2% correction error from the ideal image in all cases.

  • This study studied scoliosis, one of the most common modern diseases caused by lifestyle patterns of office workers sitting in front of computers all day and modern people who use smart phones frequently. Scoliosis is a typical complication that takes more than 80% of the nation's total population at least once. X-ray are used to test for these complications. X-ray, a non-destructive testing method that allows scoliosis to be easily performed and filmed in various areas such as the chest, abdomen and bone without contrast agents or other instruments. We uses NI DAQ to miniaturize digital X-ray imaging devices and image intensifier in self-shielding housing with Vision Assistant for drawing lines to the top and the bottom of the spine to acquire angles, i.e. curvature in real-time. In this way, the research was conducted to see scoliosis patients and their condition easily and to help rapid treatment for solving the problem of posture correction in modern people.

Lumbar Juxtafacet Cyst Treated with Direct Needle Aspiration Under the Guidance of Image Intensifier (영상증폭기하에서 직접적 바늘 흡인술로 치료한 요추 후관절 주위 낭종)

  • A lumbar juxtafacet cyst is a rare disease that causes low back pain, radiculopathy and neurological claudication by compressing the nerve roots. A 34-year-old male complained of severe low back pain and radicular pain in the right lower extremity. Magnetic resonance images revealed a cyst at the lateral recess of the spinal canal between the L3-4 disc and posterior facet joint that extended to the L4 body level. Under the guidance of an image intensifier, needle aspiration of the cyst was performed, which extracted 1.5 ml of serous, yellowish colored fluid. After the aspiration, the symptoms subsided dramatically. The follow-up magnetic resonance images showed no recurrence of the cyst. To the best of the author's knowledge, there are no reports of lumbar juxtafacet cyst treated with needle aspiration in Korea. This case is reported with a review of the relevant literature.

  • Of interest to second language researchers and classroom teachers today is whether and in what wats formal instruction can promote the development of appropriate use of the target language. Most formal instruction is closely related with the use of textbooks in ESL classrooms, so this study focuses on ESL textbooks. In order to learn to communicate successfully, students should use textbooks which specify the rules of language use for the community in which they are operating. This study examines the speech acts of compliment across 8 middle school English textbooks published in Korea. This study analyses the speech acts of compliment according to the following criteria : 1) vocabulary - adjective, verb, intensifier 2) sentence pattern 3) social strategy - invitation to talk, greetings, farewells, expression of gratitude, etc. 4) types of response. As a result of this study some suggestions is giver to promote the development of appropriate use of English through English textbooks.

Design and Performance Improvement of a Digital Tomosynthesis System for Object-Detector Synchronous Rotation (물체-검출기 동기회전 방식의 X-선 단층영상시스템 설계 및 성능개선에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents design and performance improvement of a new digital tomosynthesis (DTS) system for object-detector synchronous rotation. Firstly, a new DTS system, called OSDR (Object-Detector Synchronous Rotation) is suggested and designed to acquire X-ray digital images. Secondly, the shape distortion of DTS images generated by an image intensifier is modeled. And a new synthesis algorithm, which overcomes the limitations of the existing synthesis algorithm, is suggested to improve the sharpness of the synthesized image. Also an artifact analysis of the DTS system is performed. Thirdly, some performance indices, which evaluate quantitatively performance improvement, are defined. And the experimental verification of the performance improvement is accomplished by the ODSR system newly designed. The advantages of the ODSR system are expressed quantitatively, compared with an existing system.

  • The use of diesel engines has recently increased due to the need for internal combustion engines with a high thermal efficiency and low harmful exhaust gas. The PCCI(premixed charged compression ignition) technology has been studied specifically to simultaneously reduce NOx and PM. While the PCCI means has the merit of reducing NOx and PM, control of the combustion phase is difficult. In this study, Flame visualization was then performed with an endoscope system in order to compare combustion flame characteristics in an commercial diesel engine.
