  • This paper describes a fuzzy steering controller for an outdoor autonomous mobile robot using MR(magneto-resistive) sensor. Using the magnetic field difference values(dBy, dBz) obtained from the MR sensor, we designed fuzzy logic controller for driving the robot on the road center and proposed a method to eliminate the Earth magnetic field. To develop an autonomous mobile robot simulation program, we have done modeling MR sensor, mobile robot and coordinate transformation. A computer simulation of the robot including mobile robot dynamics and steering was used to verify the driving performance of the mobile robot controller using the fuzzy logic. So, we confirmed the robustness of the proposed fuzzy controller by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a drowsy driver detection system with a novel eye state detection method that is adaptive to various vehicle environment such as glasses, light and so forth using SURF(Speed Up Robust Feature) which can extract quickly local features from images. Also the performance of eye state detection is improved as individual three eye-state templates of each driver can be made using Bayesian inference. The experimental results under various environment with average 98.1% and 96.1% detection rate in the daytime and at night respectively and those in the opened ZJU database with average 97.8% detection rate show that the proposed method outperforms the current state-of-the-art.

  • In this paper, we propose autonomous intelligent wheelchair system which recognize the commands using the gaze recognition and avoid the detected obstacles by sensing the distance through range sensors on the way to driving. The user's commands are recognized by the gaze recognizer which use a centroid of eye pupil and two reflection points extracted using a camera with infrared filter and two infrared LEDs. These are used to control the wheelchair through the user interface. Then wheelchair system detects the obstacles using 10 ultrasonic sensors and assists that it avoid collision with obstacles. The proposed intelligent wheelchair system consists of gaze recognizor, autonomous driving module, sensor control board and motor control board. The gaze recognizer cognize user's commands through user interface, then the wheelchair is controled by the motor control board using recognized commands. Thereafter obstacle information detected by ultrasonic sensors is transferred to the sensor control board, and this transferred to the autonomous driving module. In the autonomous driving module, the obstacles are detected. For generating commands to avoid these obstacles, there are transferred to the motor control board. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed system can improve the efficiency of obstacle avoidance and provide the convenient user interface to user.

  • Installation of digital tachograph, black box, and ADAS have been enforced to commercial vehicles for preventing violent driving and accidents by the Traffic Safety Act in Korea. Nevertheless, the damage caused by road hazards has increased 1.5 times in 2016 compared to 2013. So, developing new technologies that can identify road hazard using the sensors installed in commercial vehicles are conducting by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. As a part of the technologies, this research analyze the error range of GPS installed in commercial vehicles that vary according to the driving speed. As a result, the average error was 9.72m at the driving speed of 100km/h, and the error was 2.1 times larger than the average error of 4.69m at the driving speed of 40km/h. The event point proper integration/separation range(m) was analyzed to be 20m with a recognition rate of 90% or more at the same point regardless of driving speed. The results of this research can be used as basic data for improving the accuracy of location-based data would be collected using commercial vehicles.

  • Current intersection with collectors allow entry and exit in the relevant sections just as defined by the pertinent design criteria without considering driving behavior of the vehicles coming in and out of the intersection. This study analyzed the roads in the weaving sections to review driving behavior. As a result, vehicles entering a main line are found to try to change a driving lane at a section 50~55m away from a nose part, while those entering a ramp from a main line try to change it at 35~40m from a nose part. Accordingly vehicles exiting to a connecting road from a main line were found to take prior action to change a lane earlier than those entering a main line. Conflict took place intensively at 35~40m section from the nose part entering a main line. Consequently, such conflict at an weaving section may be controlled by adjusting the length of driving lane making use of a double line (solid and dotted line) that can control changing a lane. Outcome of this study may be used as a basic data for operating and maintaining an weaving section of a intersection of a road and improving traffic safety.

  • A variety of simulation approaches based on automated driving technologies have been proposed to develop traffic operations strategies to prevent traffic crashes and alleviate congestion. The maneuver of simulated autonomous vehicles (AVs) needs to be realistic and be effectively differentiated from the behavior of manually driven vehicles (MVs). However, the verification of simulated AV maneuvers is limited due to the difficulty in collecting actual AVs trajectory and interaction data with MVs. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to evaluate the suitability of AV maneuvers based on both driving and traffic simulation experiments. The proposed evaluation framework includes the requirements for the behavior of individual AVs and the traffic stream performance resulting from the interactions with surrounding vehicles. A driving simulation approach is adopted to evaluate the feasibility of maneuvering of individual AVs. Meanwhile, traffic simulations are used to evaluate whether the impact of AVs on the performance of traffic stream is reasonable. The outcome of this study is expected to be used as a fundamental for the design and evaluation of transportation systems using automated driving technologies.

  • For the commercialization For the commercialization of autonomous vehicles (AV), the operational design domain (ODD) of automated driving systems (ADS) is to be clearly defined. A common language and consistent format must be prepared so that AV-related stakeholders can understand ODD at the same level. Therefore, overseas countries are presenting a standardized ODD framework and developing scenarios that can evaluate ADS-specific functions based on ODD. However, ODD includes conditions reflecting the characteristics of each country, such as road environment, weather environment, and traffic environment. Thus, it is necessary to clearly understand the meaning of the items defined overseas and to harmonize them to reflect the specific domestic conditions. Therefore, in this study, domestic optimization of the ODD classification system was performed by analyzing the domestic driving environment based on international standards. The driving environment of currently operating self-driving car test districts (Sangam, Seoul, and Gwangju) was investigated using the developed domestic ODD items. Then, based on the results obtained, the ranges of the ODDs in each test district were determined and compared.

  • Recently, for development of hardware systems, it has been comercially developed for lane detection system of assistive funtion to drivers. There are so many driving systems that is capable of detecting lane for ideal environment like quite visible lane and sweep curve just like highway, but these kinds of system are hard to apply for self driving system because it is difficult to detect lane in dynamic environment, which have rapid curve or only one sided lane For this paper, we proposed intelligent driving system that is able to detect the lane in case of rapid curve by labeling, or one sided lane by lane prediction. based on experimental results, we prove our lane detection system is able to detect lane not only in ideal environment, but also environment which have rapid curve or one sided lane.

  • In this paper, the model-matching control in the longitudinal autonomous driving system is investigated by vehicle dynamics simulation, which contains nonlinear subcomponents and simplified subcomponents. The design of the robust model-matching controller is performed by the characteristics of the 2 degrees of freedom controller, which is composed of the feedforward compensator and the feedback compensator. It makes the characteristics of tractive and brake force to be equivalent to the specific transfer function, which is suggested as the reference model. Mathematical models of vehicle dynamic analysis including the model-matching control are constructed for computer simulation. Then, simple examples on open-loop simulation without any controller and closed loop simulation with the model-matching controller are applied to check the validity of the robust controller. As the practical example, the autonomous driving system in the longitudinal direction is adopted. It is proved that the model-matching control is effective and adequate to the disturbances and the perturbations, which are shown in the responses of the change of a vehicle mass and a road gradient.

  • In this paper, light-emitting-diode (LED) backlight driving circuits and dimming method for medium-sized and large liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are proposed. The double loop control method, the intelligent-phase-shifted PWM dimming method, the fast-switching current regulator, and the current matching techniques are proposed to improve not only the current regulation characteristics and the power efficiency but also the current matching characteristics and the transient response of the LED current. The brightness of the backlight using the proposed local dimming method was determined from the histogram of the local block to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without image distortion. The measured maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for medium-sized LCDs was 90%, and the simulation results showed an 88% maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for large LCDs. The maximum backlight power-saving ratio of the proposed dimming method was 41.7% in the simulation with a high-contrast image. The experiment and simulation results showed that the performance of LEDs as LCD backlight units (BLUs) improved with the proposed circuits and method.
