  • Anticipated water scarcity in the first half of this century is one of the most concerned international issues. However, even though the issue has an international impact and world wide monitoring is critical, there are limited number of global estimates at present. In this study, annual water availability was derived from annual runoff estimated by land surface models using Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (TRIP) with 0.5 degree by 0.5 degree longitude/latitude resolution globally. Global distribution of water withdrawal for each sector in the same horizontal spatial resolution was estimated based on country-base statistics of municipal water use, industrial water use, and agricultural intake, using global geographical information system with global distributions of population and irrigated crop land area. The total population under water stress estimated for 1995 corresponded very well with former estimates, however, the number is highly depend on how to assume the ratio how much water from outside of the region can be used for water resources within the region. It suggests the importance of regional studies evaluating the possibility of water intake as well as the validity of the investment for water resources withdrawal facilities.

  • The purpose of this study is to integrate a structural design Process of framed steel structures. It is composed of analysis, design, drafting and construction management. However each step of these works involved with a large amount of data and man hour resources. The aim of this study is to alleviate time consuming efforts mentioned above by integrating the different stage of works. Very successful results have been achieved by setting up a common database in whole process and applying the techniques of knowledge base system.

  • Rural amenity resources consist of natural, cultural and social resources. Some of resources have been surveyed in other institutes and organizations and information system about these resources has been constructed. Integrating with information of existing system or database is helpful to produce useful rural amenity resources information to users. This integration of distributed information is based on semantic integration. In this paper, we used ontology for semantic integration and introduced the method of external information integration using ontology. We designed ontology table to represent ontology in database and integrated distributed information using ontology. To examine the improvement of information service efficiency and the applicability, rural amenity resources information and tourist attraction information database were constructed and integrated. Also, the information service efficiency with information integration was evaluated using recall ratio and compared to the information service efficiency without information integration.

  • As the Proliferation of the Internet, especially World Wide Web, numerous information resources have been constructed. The characteristics of information resources on the Internet are that the information resources are distributed, autonomous, and heterogeneous. Moreover each information resource has its own query method, data representation, and schema structure. The integration of information resources is one of the most important research issues in the Internet data management. The task of information resources integration system is to answer queries that require extracting and combining data from multiple information sources. In this paper, we propose an XML-based Mediation Framework(XMF) for integrating the Internet information resources.

  • With rapid growth in the complexity of large scale engineering systems, the application of multidisciplinary analysis and design optimization (MDO) in the engineering design process has garnered much attention. MDO addresses the challenge of integrating several different disciplines into the design process. Primary challenges of MDO include computational expense and poor scalability. The introduction of a distributed, collaborative computational environment results in better utilization of available computational resources, reducing the time to solution, and enhancing scalability. SORCER, a Java-based network-centric computing platform, enables analyses and design studies in a distributed collaborative computing environment. Two different optimization algorithms widely used in multidisciplinary engineering design-VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP-are implemented on a SORCER grid. VTDIRECT95, a Fortran 95 implementation of D. R. Jones' algorithm DIRECT, is a highly parallelizable derivative-free deterministic global optimization algorithm. QNSTOP is a parallel quasi-Newton algorithm for stochastic optimization problems. The purpose of integrating VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP into the SORCER framework is to provide load balancing among computational resources, resulting in a dynamically scalable process. Further, the federated computing paradigm implemented by SORCER manages distributed services in real time, thereby significantly speeding up the design process. Part 1 covers SORCER and the algorithms, Part 2 presents results for aircraft panel design with curvilinear stiffeners.
