This work examines the most viable nuclear technology options for future underwater designs that would meet high safety standards as well as good economic potential, for construction in the 2030-2040 timeframe. The top five concepts selected from a survey of 13 nuclear technologies were compared to a small modular pressurized water reactor (PWR) designed with a conventional layout. In order of smallest to largest primary system size where the reactor and all safety systems are contained, the top five designs were: (1) a lead-bismuth fast reactor based on the Russian SVBR-100; (2) a novel organic cooled reactor; (3) an innovative superheated water reactor; (4) a boiling water reactor based on Toshiba's LSBWR; and (5) an integral PWR featuring compact steam generators. A similar study on potential attractive power cycles was also performed. A condensing and recompression supercritical $CO_2$ cycle and a compact steam Rankine cycle were designed. It was found that the hull size required by the reactor, safety systems and power cycle can be significantly reduced (50-80%) with the top five designs compared to the conventional PWR. Based on the qualitative economic consideration, the organic cooled reactor and boiling water reactor designs are expected to be the most cost effective options.
It is well known that the model of nuclear reactors features natural nonlinearity, and variable parameters during power tracking operation. In this paper, a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode control (DOB-ASMC) strategy is proposed for power tracking of the pressurized-water reactor (PWR) in the presence of lumped disturbances. The nuclear reactor model is firstly established based on point-reactor kinetics equations with six delayed neutron groups. Then, a new sliding mode disturbance observer is designed to estimate the lumped disturbance, and its stability is discussed. On the basis of the developed DOB, an adaptive sliding mode control scheme is proposed, which is a combination of backstepping technique and integral sliding mode control approach. In addition, an adaptive law is introduced to enhance the robustness of a PWR with disturbances. The asymptotic stability of the overall control system is verified by Lyapunov stability theory. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed DOB-ASMC strategy has better power tracking performance than conventional sliding mode controller and PID control method as well as conventional backstepping controller.
In this paper, a reconfigurable controller consisting of a normal controller and a standby controller is designed to control the thermoelectric (TE) power in the SP-100 space reactor. The normal controller uses a model predictive control (MPC) method where the future TE power is predicted by using support vector regression. A genetic algorithm that can effectively accomplish multiple objectives is used to optimize the normal controller. The performance of the normal controller depends on the capability of predicting the future TE power. Therefore, if the prediction performance is degraded, the proportional-integral (PI) controller of the standby controller begins to work instead of the normal controller. Performance deterioration is detected by a sequential probability ratio test (SPRT). A lumped parameter simulation model of the SP-100 nuclear space reactor is used to verify the proposed reconfigurable controller. The results of numerical simulations to assess the performance of the proposed controller show that the TE generator power level controlled by the proposed reconfigurable controller could track the target power level effectively, satisfying all control constraints. Furthermore, the normal controller is automatically switched to the standby controller when the performance of the normal controller degrades.
Optimal control theories based on the maximum principles have been evolved and applied to distributed parameter systems(DPSs) represented by partial differential equations (PDEs) and integral equations (IEs). This paper intends to show that an optimal control of a tubular reactor described by a one-dimensional partial differential equation was obtained using the distributed parameter control method for parabolic PDEs. In develping an algorithm which implements the calculation, the method of lines (MOL) was adopted through using a package called the DSS/2. For the tubular reactor system chosen for this paper, the optimal control method based on PDEs with the numerical MOL showed to be more efficient than the one based on IEs.
The performance prediction of SMART MCP was performed using a computational fluid dynamics code. General capacity-head performance curve of MCP, which is provided to other design branches as design input, was obtained and it showed the typical type of axial pump performance curve. When four MCPs operate in parallel and one of them stops while the others continue to operate, SMART requires reduced power operation. A procedure for predicting the performance of SMART MCP for that case was developed and verified with available experimental data. An analysis based on the developed procedure was performed for two cases; the impeller of sloped MCP is fixed or free to rotate in reverse direction. According to the results, $73\%$ flow rate of normal operation enters the reactor core in the case of the locked impeller. In case of the impeller free rotation, the flow rate entering the reactor core is $62.8\%$.
Many innovative design features are employed in the reactor vessel internals of SMART, a small integral-type pressurized water reactor, one of which is the flow skirt, which uniformly distributes flow and horizontally restrains the lower part of the core support barrel. This new design requires a comprehensive investigation of vibration characteristics. Therefore, in this study, modal characteristics of flow skirts are investigated with finite element analysis. Specifically, we investigate how the presence of holes, the presence of three rings attached to the flow skirt, and the thickness of the lowest shell effect vibration characteristics. In addition, the fluid effect is addressed, since the flow skirt is submerged in the fluid.
A pressurizer in a small integral type pressurized water reactor is located inside the upper region of the reactor vessel, and uses a space between the upper head of the reactor vessel and the upper region of the upper guide structure which is partially filled with fluid depending on the operating power. This new design requires a comprehensive investigation of vibration characteristics. This study investigates the modal characteristics of a pressurizer which uses a simplified cylindrical shell model, focusing on how having fluid in the shell affects vibration and response characteristics. In addition, an analysis of sloshing is performed and the response characteristics are addressed.
CFD analyses of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the impeller and diffuser of an axial flow pump including suction and discharge parts are presented and compared with experimental data. The purpose of the current study is to validate the CFD method for the performance analysis of the main coolant pump for SMART and to investigate the effect of suction and discharge shapes on the pump performance. To generate a performance curve, not only the design point but also the off-design points were computed. The results were compared with available experimental data in terms of head generated. At the design point, the analysis accurately predicts the experimental head value. In the range of the higher flow rates, the results are also in very good agreement with the experimental data, in magnitude but also in terms of slope of variation. For lower flow rates, the results shows that the analysis considering the suction and discharge well describe the typical S-shape performance curve of the axial pump.
In the coiling process of helical steam generator tubes of integral reactor SMART, a considerable amount of spring back, which induces dimensional inaccuracy and difficulty in fabrication, has been arised. In this research, an analytical model was derived to evaluate the amount of the spring back for steam generator tubes. The model was developed on the basis of beam theory and elastic-perfectly plastic material property. This model was extended to consider the effect of plastic hardening and the effect of the tensile force on the spring back phenomena. Parametric studies were performed for various design variables of steam generator tubes in order to minimize the spring back in the design stage. A sensitivity analysis has shown that the low yield strength, the high elastic modulus, the small helix diameter, and the large tube diameter result in a small amount of the spring back. The amount of the spring back can be controlled by the selection of adequate design values in the basic design stage and reduced to an allowable limit by the application of the tensile force to the tube during the coiling process.
