A blind-mode integer frequency offset estimation algorithm is proposed for an OFDM system. Imperfect integer frequency offset estimation causes ambiguity in the data sub-carrier position. Morelli's blind integer frequency offiet estimation algorithm exploits the likelihood function by comparing the power in sub-carriers. It, however, shows performance degradation when there is the fractional frequency offset. The proposed algorithm solves this by using interpolation in the frequency domain. In this algorithm, it is exploited that the effect of the frequency offset is shown as a shift of power spectrum. By calculating the covariance of over-sampled samples, most approximate samples to integer point are obtained. It enables integer frequency offset estimation less affected by fractional frequency offset.

Recently, frequency offset estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing has been proposed by Ren et al. (REA). The method can estimate an frequency offset independently from training symbol structure. In REA method, however, the detection probability of integer frequency offset is varying according to fractional frequency offset. In this paper, we first analysis REA frequency offset estimation method, and define new detection criteria suitable for the method. Then, we propose efficient integer frequency offset estimation method based on the new detection criteria and maximum likelihood method. The proposed method still has the advantages of REA method, while overcome the drawback. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed methods outperform the REA method, in terms of integer frequency offset detection probability.
In this paper, we propose to a robust frequency offset estimation method of OFDM signals. A carrier frequency offset may be decomposed into an integer multiple of the subcarrier spacing and a residual frequency offset. Fractional part of frequency offset is obtained by using the maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) method. And we use the correlation of the samples at the output of the discrete Fourier transform(DFT) to estimate integer part of frequency offset. The result shows that the estimation frequency offset is almost linear to frequency offset. We propose to an improved estimation error variance of the carrier frequency offset estimation. The proposed estimator has better performance than the conventional ones in terms of error variance and tracking range.

This paper proposes an integer frequency offset estimation scheme robust to timing offset for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems. The proposed scheme exploits a feature that a sample distance between a continual pilot and a scattered pilot nearest to it in an OFDM symbol belongs to one of predetermined distances. First after calculating a correlation value of every continual pilot and its nearest scattered pilot. Then, it is divided into several groups according to the sample distances. Since correlation values with the same sample distance undergo the same effect of the timing offset, the effect of the timing offset can be removed by re-correlating these correlation values. From the simulation results we can confirm that the proposed algorithm estimates the integer frequency offset with the robustness to the timing offset when compared to a conventional scheme.

In this paper, a novel pilot-aided integer frequency offset estimation scheme is proposed for orthogonal Sequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based digital video broadcasting (DVB) systems. The conventional pilot-aided integer frequency offset estimation scheme proposed for OFDM-based DVB systems exploits the partial information of combinations provided by pilots. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel integer frequency offset estimation scheme exploiting all information of pilot combinations. To compare the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the conventional scheme, we conduct a simulation in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath Rayleigh channels, which shows that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in terms of the probability of integer frequency offset estimation failure.

This paper proposes a novel method for pilot-aided integer frequency offset (IFO) estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) systems. The conventional method proposed for estimating the IFO uses only partial information of combinations that pilots can provide, which stems from a rigorous assumption that the channel responses of pilots used for estimating the IFO change very rapidly. In this paper, we propose an efficient IFO estimation method exploiting additional information of combinations that pilots can provide to improve the performance of the IFO estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method in terms of the IFO detection probability.

A new frequency offset estimation algorithm for chirp spread spectrum based on matched filter is proposed. Generally, the differential phase between successive symbols is used for the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm. However, if the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm is used for CSS, phase ambiguity arises because of long symbol duration and guard time. The phase ambiguity causes performance degradation of matched filter since the received signal is corrupted by the integer frequency offset. In this paper, we propose a new frequency offset estimation algorithm which separates integer and fractional frequency offset estimation for removing the phase ambiguity. The proposed algorithm estimates the integer frequency offset by using differential phase between matched filtering results of sub-chirps and successive symbols. Then, the fractional frequency offset is estimated by using the differential phase between successive symbols Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm well removes the phase ambiguity, and have almost same estimation performance compared with conventional one when there is not the phase ambiguity.

In this paper, we propose an integer frequency offset estimation and compensation method based on PLC preamble correlation in DOCSIS 3.1 Downstream system. The proposed method determines the PLC preamble subcarrier location recovered from PLC data and the one obtained from PLC preamble correlation. We showed the performance of PLC preamble detection in the received signal through the maximum value detection of PLC preamble correlation. Thus we can estimate and compensate for the integer frequency offset by computing the difference of PLC subcarrier locations.
In this paper, we propose a new frequency offset estimation algorithm for DBO-CSS which is a standard for wireless personal area network (WPAN). In DBO-CSS, there can be several integer multiples of $2{\pi}$ in the phase rotation caused by the frequency offset because of the long time difference between the samples of differential relation and the high permissible frequency offset of the crystal oscillators between the transmitter and the receiver. In this paper, we propose an estimation algorithm by using the relationships of each sub-chirp signals to find the integer part without phase ambiguity.

In digital radio broadcasting systems, long delays are incurred in service start time when tuning to a particular frequency because several synchronization steps, such as symbol timing synchronization, frame synchronization, and carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset compensation are necessary. Therefore, the operation of the synchronization blocks causes delays ranging from several hundred milliseconds to a few seconds until the start of the radio service after frequency tuning. Furthermore, if spectrum inversed signals are transmitted in digital radio broadcasting systems, the receivers are unable to decode them, even though most receivers can demodulate the spectral inversed signals in analog radio broadcasting systems. Accordingly, fast synchronization techniques and a method for spectral inversion detection are required in digital radio broadcasting systems that are to replace the analog radio systems. This paper presents a joint detection method of frame, integer carrier frequency offset, and spectrum inversion for DRM Plus digital broadcasting systems. The proposed scheme can detect the frame and determine whether the signal is normal or spectral inversed without any carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset compensation, enabling fast frame synchronization. The proposed method shows outstanding performance in environments where symbol timing offsets and sampling frequency offsets exist.
