Association between energy intake and skeletal muscle mass according to dietary patterns derived by cluster analysis: data from the 2008 ~ 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (군집분석으로 도출한 식사패턴별 에너지 섭취량과 골격근육량의 연관성 분석 : 2008 ~ 2010년 국민건강영양조사 자료를 활용하여)

  • Purpose: This study investigated major dietary patterns among healthy Korean adults using cluster analysis and analyzed the relationship between energy intake and skeletal muscle mass. Methods: This study was conducted using the data from the 2008 ~ 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey. The data of 7,922 subjects aged 30 years and over, without any missing values, were included in the final analysis. K-means cluster analyses were conducted to identify the dietary patterns of the study subjects, which were based on the energy intake from 21 food groups using a 24-h recall method. The changes in energy intake with each dietary pattern, according to quartiles of skeletal muscle mass, were investigated. Results: Three dietary patterns were identified for both men and women: 'Flour, Animal fat', 'White rice' and 'Healthy mixed diet'. The association between energy intake and skeletal muscle mass for both men and women was significant only in the 'White rice' dietary pattern. In the 'White rice' pattern, the energy intake increased up to > 300 kcal from the lowest to the highest quartile of skeletal muscle mass after adjustment for covariates. Within the 'White rice' pattern, skeletal muscle mass was linearly associated with energy intake in all the age groups in men. Conclusion: Energy intake was significantly associated with changes in skeletal muscle mass only in the 'White rice' pattern. Furthermore, the degree of association between the change in skeletal muscle mass and energy intake differed according to gender. These results indicate that the association between skeletal muscle mass and energy intake may be specific to Korean people who are accustomed to a traditional Korean diet.

  • A debate over the association between dietary patterns and obesity is not settled in the literature. Some studies suggest that there are significant differences in the mean body mass index (BMI) across dietary patterns, while others refute the result. Therefore, we extended this line of study to examine whether the influence of dietary pattern is strong enough to affect the incidence of obesity based on the criterion, BMI=25. We identified 3 dietary patterns using a cluster analysis of food intake data obtained from the food frequency survey conducted as a part of Korean genome epidemiologic study: 'variety', 'unrefined grain', and 'rice' dietary patterns. A Cox Hazard regression result showed that the all the dietary pattern variable parameters were not significant. Hence, it was concluded that the dietary patterns do not affect the incidence of obesity under the control of variables, such as age, energy intake, and etc.

An Analysis of Size Conditions and Patterns of Ready to Wear Basic Skirts for 20's Women (20대 브랜드의 기본 스커트의 치수실태 및 패턴분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize of the size conditions of ready to wear skirts and analyze the patterns of them so that some educational patterns can be complemented. For this purpose, the investigation of the size conditions was focused on the body sizes and products sizes of the care labels. The patterns of them produced through CAD have been classified into 24 items for the effective and practical analysis. Thus, 9 brands were selected and the basic skirts marketed in 2002 spring were analyzed. The results were as follows. 1. Designs of the backs of the basic skirts produced by 9 brands have the similar designs with two darts. Regarding the designs of the front, 6 brands of them have the designs with no darts, 3 of them have the one with two darts. Designs of waists are composed of low waists and round belts. 2. Regarding the waist circumference as the basic composing elements of skirts, 55.6% of the patterns have the composition of the styles with larger front than the back but 33.3% of them have the same front as back. As to the hips, 77.8% of them have the composition of the patterns with larger back than the front. As for the comparison of waist lines, 55.6% of them have lower front lines than the back lines. 3. Regarding darts placement, it was moved to the side lines from the middle of 1/2 of waist lines, dart intake was 1.8-2.4㎝, the length of the front darts was 7.8-9.5㎝, and the length of the back darts 8.4-11.1㎝ 4. The results of wearing-tests by the sensory evaluation, it showed that almost all the items of the results were satisfactory.

Away-from-Home Eating and Dietary Patterns of Ugandan Adults: a Web-based- Survey (우간다 성인의 외식과 식이패턴의 관련성: 온라인 기반 설문조사)

  • Objectives: Away-from-home (AFH) eating has been associated with poor diet quality and health outcomes like obesity in developed countries. AFH eating is also emerging in low-income countries, but its influence on overall diet quality is under-researched. We examined the prevalence of AFH eating and its influence on the dietary patterns of Ugandan adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study employed a web-based survey to interview Ugandan adults aged 18 ~ 65 years. A qualitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess the food group intake, which was then converted into daily intake frequencies. Principal component analysis was used to derive dietary patterns. The participants were then classified based on the tertiles (T) of dietary pattern scores. Results: About 75% of the 375 participants reported eating AFH. The young men, food insecure, and urban dwellers were more likely to eat AFH ≥ 5 times/week. Three dietary patterns emerged; the animal-based, beverage pattern; the high fat, sweet pattern; and the traditional, plant-based pattern. Participants who frequently ate AFH were 2.85 times and 5.64 times more likely to be in the second and third tertiles, respectively, of the animal-based, beverage pattern compared to the rare eaters (OR = 2.85, 95% CI: 1.35-6.06 for T2 vs T1; and OR = 5.64, 95% CI: 2.50-12.73 for T3 vs T1). The odds of being in the second tertile of the high fat, sweet pattern was significantly higher for frequent AFH eaters compared to the rare eaters (OR = 2.61, 95% CI:1.23-5.52). Conclusions: The prevalence of AFH eating was high. Frequent AFH eating was common among the young, male, food insecure, and urban dwellers, and was associated with unhealthy dietary patterns.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diet quality of the menus delivered by 17 free meal service centers for the low-income home-bound elderly in Chung- cheong buk-Do. Statistical data analysis was compleleted using the SPSS package program for descriptive analysis, T-test, and ANOVA. The meals offered by free meal service centers were not met the 1/3 recommended dietary allowances in calcium and vitamin $B_2$. There were significant differences between dependent variables(nutrient content, nutrient density, nutrient deficiency, NAR, MAR, food group intake patterns) and independent variables (operation type, operation status, operation period, nutritionist, food cost).

Intake Flow Simulation in a D.I. Engine Cylinder (디젤엔진 흡입과정에서 실린더내의 시뮬레이션)

  • A computer program was developed to predict swirling steady axisymmetric turbulent flows by extending TEACH Code. It was applied to a reciprocating engine cylinder with a intake valve on the flat head. Flows were assumed to be steady and swirling. Effects of Reynolds number, the valve lift, and the swirl ratio on flow patterns and turbulence were investigated numerically. Flow patterns were reasonably predicted in comparison with experimental results. Length of the recirculation zone was shortened with increasing valve lifts and swirl ratios. Static pressure distributions show maximum value near the reattachment point of the incoming circular jet and minimum value near the maximum width of the valve attached recirculation zone.

The Effect of Different dietary Patterns (between Non-Vegetarian and Vegetarian) on Protein Nutritional Status during Short-term (식사 Pattern의 차이가 단백질 영양상태에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the protein nutritional status of female collegians between nonvegetarian diet groups(14) and vegetarian diet groups(19). Daily intake, protein were calculated from food direct measurement. Urea/creatinine, muscle mass, fatique conditions and hematological parameter were calculated. Blood samples were analyzed for total protein, albumin ammonia, urea, uric acid, creatinine, BUN contents. The results obtained are summarized as following : 1) On total dietary intake, especially Fe, vitamin C, niacin intake, vegetarian groups were higher than non vegetarian groups. 2) On composition of EAA(essential amino acids), vegetarians were highter than non vegetarian of leucine contents, but were lower lysine and threonine contents. 3) On urea / creatinine excretion, vegetarians were higher than non begetarians. Muscle mass were non signicant, fatique condition, vegetarians were normal state. 4) Non vegetarians were increased serum albumin total protein, uric acid, ammonia but vegetarians were decreased BUN, ammonia after experimental diet intake. 5) In process of time after meal, non vegetarians were increased serum albumin total protein, BUN, but vegetarians were decreased ammonia.

A study on the flow characteristics around a suction pipe of circulation water pump in thermal power plant (화력발전소 순환수펌프 흡입관 주위에서의 유동특성에 관한 연구)

  • Vortex and swirl occurring in a pump suction intake sump normally reduce the performance and disturb the safe operation of the circulation water pump in thermal power plants. This paper presents a case study of one particular intake sump design via a CFD analysis and a hydraulic model testing. The physical experiments and numerical analysis were performed under two flow and three level variation conditions. The vortex patterns around the pump suction pipe have been predicted by a commercial CFD code with the k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The model tests were conducted on a 1/10 model for a practical intake sump. The location, number and general pattern of the free surface vortex and submerged vortex predicted by CFD simulation were found to be a good agreement with those observed in the model testing.

Preliminary Throughflow Analysis of a Lift Fan in a Core Separated Turbofan Engine System

  • Lift Fan Engines of JAXA's conceptual Jet VTOL aircraft have a very small bellmouse shape air intake, which make some differences in aerodynamic design of the blades. To obtain a better rotor or stator blade design, this paper performs a numerical analysis of the throughflow on a lift fan as a two-dimensional axisymmetrical flow. Based on the last report focusing on the air intake's influence on the throughflow, a more realistic bellmouse air intake case is treated to reconsider the influence on the throughflow by the small bellmouse air intake. Three work input patterns are tested to reduce some problematic influences on the throughflow or blade designs. The obtained result shows one of acceptable blade designs for the lift fan engine.

Analysis of Food and Nutrient Intake of Menu for Elementary School Foodservices in Seoul (서울 지역 일부 초등학교 급식 식단의 식품 및 영양소 섭취 분석)

  • This study was carried on the analysis of food and nutrient intake for elementary school foodservices in Seoul. The survey was conducted through the 200 menus submitted by the 5 elementary schools in Seoul. Energy and all nutrient intakes exceeded the Recommended Daily Allowances of Koreans. Carbohydrate provided 56.32% of total energy intake; protein accounted for 16.06%; fat provided 27.62%. Total intake of food was 549 g on the average, which consisted of 90.04 g cereals, 130.17 g vegetables, 31.56 g meats, 21.63 g fishes and 200.00 g milks. The basic menu patterns were Rice+Soup (or Stew)+Kimchi, and 2 other side dishes including milk. These data underscore the necessity of developing the 'Standard Menu' for elementary school foodservices.
