The air fuel ratios of current gasoline engines are almost controlled by several air flow meters. When CVVT (Continuous Variable Valve Timing) is applied to a gasoline engine for higher engine performance, the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor is difficult to follow the instantaneous air fuel ratio due to the valve timing effect. Therefore, a HFM (Hot Film Flow Meter) is widely used for measuring intake air flow in this case. However, the HFMs are incapable of indicating to reverse flow, the oscillation of intake air flow has an negative effect on the precision of the HFM. Consequently, the various duct configurations in front of the air flow sensor affect the precision of HFM sensitivity. This paper mainly focused on the analysis of the reverse flow, flow fluctuation in throttle upstream and the geometry of intake system which influence the HFM measurement.
This paper describes the effect of air assisted fuel injection system(AAI) using compressed air to improve the performance of lean combustion engine. AAI is designed to promote fuel atomization and intake flow. In order to investigate the performance of engine with AAl, experiments are conducted varying the engine revolution speed, lean air-fuel ratio and intake manifold pressure. Compared with the original engine, the performance of the engine with MI is improved as the air-fuel mixture becomes leaner or the engine load becomes lower. The descreasing rate of BSFC is propotional to the relative air-fuel ratio and the lean misfire limit extended more than 0.2 relative airfuel ratio.
A computational study on the improvement of the pressure loss of intake system, which is located at engine manifold of the combat vehicle, has been conducted using a finite-volume-based, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. The computational result of the pressure loss through the air cleaner is in good agreement with equivalent experimental data. A parametric study was done for improving of the pressure loss of intake system over the baseline case. The effects of five primary parameters such as the height of inlet, the width of interconnection pipe, the shape of drain chamber and the diameter of filter housing were considered in this study. Consequently, this computational investigation can contribute to finding an optimal guideline for the idea of improvement in the pressure loss of intake system.
Future powertrain technologies will be developed focused on applications of eco-friendly technology for internal combustion engine, electric vehicle and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. But it is expected that these cutting edge technologies will not be applied immediately due to lack of infrastructure, technical and economical reasons. Therefore, numerous developments of internal combustion engine will be carried out for the time being. There have been many turbo engine developments undergoing to maximize the engine performance using turbo charger system in accordance with global trend-green technology and downsizing of engine which coincides with HMC's future development strategy. This study reviews the development process and result of plastic intake manifold module which is firstly developed for turbo engine. CAE simulation and experiments were implanted to evaluate design validity.
Unsteady state free natural gas jets injected from several types of injectors were numerically simulated. Simulations showed good agreements with the schlieren experimental results. Moreover, injections of natural gas in intake manifolds of a single-valve engine and a double-valve engine were predicted as well. Predictions revealed that large volumetric injections of natural gas in intake manifolds led to strong impingement of natural gas with the intake valves, which as a result, gave rise to pronounced backward reflection of natural gas towards the inlets of intake manifolds, together with significant increase in pressure in intake manifold. Based on our simulations, we speculated that for engines with short intake manifolds, reflections of the mixture of natural gas and air were likely to approach the inlets of intake manifolds and subsequently be inbreathed into other cylinders, resulting in non-uniform mixture distributions between the cylinders. For engines with long intake manifolds, inasmuch as the degrees of intake interferences between the cylinders were not identical in light of the ignition sequences, non-uniform intake charge distributions between the cylinders would occur.

It has been well acknowledged that intake system plays great role in the performance of reciprocating engine. Well-designed intake system is expected to not only increase engine efficiency but also decrease engine emission, which is one of the most urgent issues in the automotive society. Thorough understanding of the flow in intake system helps great to design adequate intake system. Even though both experimental and numerical methods are used to study intake flow, numerical analysis is more widely used due to its merits in time and economy. Intake system of In-line 6-Cylinder CNG engine was chosen for the analysis ICEM CFD HEXA was used to create 3-D structured grid and FIRE code was used for the flow analysis in the intake system. Due to the complexity of the geometry standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was applied. Numerical analysis was performed for various inlet and outlet boundary conditions under both steady and transient flow. Inlet mass flow rate and outlet pressure variation were changing parameters with respect to engine speed. Flow parameters, such as velocity, pressure and flow distribution, were evaluated to provide adequate data of this intake system.
In this study, a computer analysis has been developed for predicting the pipe pressure of the intake and exhaust manifold. To obtain the boundary conditions for a numerical analysis, one dimensional and non-steady gas dynamic calculation is performed by using the MOC(Method Of Characteristic). The main numerical parameters are the variation of the engine revolution to calculate the pulsating flow which the intake and exhaust valves arc working. The comparison of exhaust pressure in case of numerical results is quite matched with in case of experimental results. When engine revaluation is increased, the pressure amplitude showed a high value, but the pressure frequency was decreased.
This paper presents an approach to nonlinear engine idle controller and intake manifold absolute pressure(MAP) observer based on mean torque production model. A stable engine idle speed is important in that the unstable engine Idle mode can make engine to drooping or stall state. A sliding fuzzy controller has been designed to control engine idle speed under load disturbance. A sliding observer is also developed to estimate the intake manifold absolute pressure and compared with the actual MAP sensor value. The sliding mode observer has shown good robustness and good tracking performance. The inputs of sliding fuzzy controller are the errors of rpm and MAP. The output is a duty cycle(DC) for driving a idle speed control valve(ISCV).

Generally, there are two methods in researching internal combustion engines. One is by experimental research and the other is by computer simulation. The experimental research has many merits that researchers can get data for engine performance, but it has also some demerit of cost and time. If there is an engine simulation code with accuracy for the solution, it is very convenient to predict the performance and optimum design value of the engine. In this study, engine performance simulation program has been improved to predict the transient variation of properties of gas in cylinder, intake and exhaust manifolds, There total program code was developed to calculate the pressure, flame factor and turbulent intensity, As a result of present study, the authors could predicted the in-cylinder pressure, intake manifold pressure and the engine performance in various conditions. The authors also could easily prepare the tool if optimum design of manifold and in-cylinder geometry.
