This paper describes flow characteristics in a piping system having various duct shapes on refuse collecting system. A simulator for the refuse collecting system is designed to analyze the flow characteristics in the piping system. The simulator consists of an air intake, a waste chute, circular duct having various shapes, cyclone and turbo blower. The simulator has four different duct shapes: straight, curved, inclined and Y-shaped ducts. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis is introduced to analyze the pressure loss in the piping system. Throughout the numerical simulation, pressure loss obtained by numerical simulation has a good agreement with the results of experimental measurements. The selected length of curved and Y-ducts for the pressure loss is determined using pressure distributions on the duct. Flow and pressure characteristics in the piping system of the simulator are evaluated by numerical simulation and discussed in detail.
Recently, many automotive companies tend to apply an air quality system (AQS), which prevents polluted air such as smoke or dust by controlling air intake actuator of vehicle, to satisfy the consumer's need for agreeable in-vehicle environment. However, performance of the traditional AQS is not satisfactory because a polluted air may enter into the inside of vehicle through the breaks of windows. Especially, the commercial vehicles such as bus or truck need to be prevented polluted air from the breaks of vehicle. Hence, as an alternative to the traditional AQS, this paper presents the architecture of smart AQS for commercial vehicle and implementation of the smart AQS. Also, the performance of the suggested system is evaluated through an experimental testbed.
In this study, the flow characteristics at the ventilation holes was analyzed by using numerical method when carbon composite brake disk was rotated at a constant speed. In order to ensure the validity of the analysis results, grid dependency test was performed by considering the accuracy and appropriateness, and 4mm mesh size was selected for decrease of the maximum error rate 63.6%. As a result, the outside air flows in the clearance between the disk and shaft in case of B model. whereas, the outside air flows in the clearance or the outlet of the ventilation holes in case of A and C models. And also average static pressure at the outlet was changed depending on shape of the ventilation holes and rotational speed of the disk in case of A and C models. Besides, in the B model, intake air according to the clearance goes with side surface of ventilation hole, and so increased by mean velocity of 4.64m/s and mean pressure of 0.58pa in the ventilation hole outlet, in case of disk rotational speed of 146.21rad/s.
The re quest to develop the engines that are able to run without air or with very little oxygen condition is raised with the interest of ocean science or the mines. This research had already be gun before the world war II, but had been stagnant owing to the appearance of nuclear power. Recycle diesel engines have ability to run under the above mentioned condition the recycle diesel engine recirculates exhaust gases into intake port and consumes additional oxygen supplied by oxygen tank. Carbon dioxide is controlled by the absorber. The combustion and emission characteristics of recycle diesel engines are quite different with conventional one because the working fluids of recycle diesel engines consist of Ar, $CO_2$ and $O_2$ as well as $N_2$. Recycle diesel engine is therefore different with general diesel engine from the viewpoint of intake air composition. It is required to investigate the effect of intake composition in the combustion and emission to know recycle diesel engine. In this study, NOx concentration, smoke and cylinder pressure are measured with the variation of Ar and $CO_2$ Reduces show that the addition of Ar reduces NOx but increases smoke. Otherwise $CO_2$ reduces smoke and NOX simultaneously. Only $CO_2$ increases the ignition delay and both gases increase fuel consumption Ar addition is superior to $CO_2$ addition for the performance of recycle diesel engine system but $CO_2$ has the avantage with respect to emission.
The combination of physical models of an advanced engine control system was proposed to obtain sophisticated combustion control in ultra-lean combustion, including homogeneous compression-ignition and activated radical combustion with a light load and in stoichiometric mixture combustion with a full load. Physical models of intake, combustion and engine thermodynamics were incorporated, in which the effects of residual gas from prior cycles on intake air mass and combustion were taken into consideration. The combined control of compression ignition at a light load and sparit ignition at full load for a high compession ratio engine was investigated using simulations. The control strategies of the variable valve timing and the intake pressure were clarified to keep auto-ignition at a light load and prevent knock at a full load.
Distribution of fuel-air mixture has a strong influence on performance and emissions of a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine. In this paper, parametric study is performed by KIVA-3V to investigate fuel-air mixture with respect to injection timing, cycle equivalence ratio and engine speed. With open-valve injection intensive mixing during intake and compression stroke results in relatively homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. Sequential induction of fuel-air mixture and fresh air results in stratification in the cylinder among the test cases at closed-valve injection. There is close similarity in the calculated distributions of the mixture in the cylinder with different cycle equivalence ratios and engine speeds. The results are compared against pressure traces and flame images obtained in a single cylinder engine converted from a 11L six-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine.
In order to obtain underwater or underground power sources, the closed cycle diesel engine is operated in the non air-breathing circuit system where the major species of the working fluid include oxygen, argon, and recycled exhaust gas. In the present study, the closed cycle diesel engine is designed to operate at the intake pressure between 2 and 3 bar. For operating in the open-cycle and closed-cycle situations, experimental apparatus using this diesel engine is made with ACAP as data acquisition system. In open, semi-open, and closed cycle modes, the predicted p-$\theta$ and P-V are compared with load bank power. Computation have been performed for wide range of major experimental parameters such as the specific fuel and oxygen concentrations, fuel conversion efficiency and polytropic exponent, IMEP and maximum cylinder pressure.

A fundamental experimental study for an alternative proposal to super-speed craft propulsion system called underwater ram-jet propulsion by high pressure air ejection as driving force was investigated. For basic study of the effects of ram-jet propulsion performance, a simple underwater ram-jet flow field was established and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method was adopted to analyse the jet-induced flow appearing at ram intake, mixing chamber and nozzle. Some flow dynamics relating to the high-speed ram-jet effect were discussed for the basic understanding of the its propulsion principle.
Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spot-lighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. Spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is varied with crank angle. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system such as laser scattering method and schlieren method were developed to clarity the spray behavior during on intake stroke. As the ambient pressure increases, thepenetration length and spray angle show a tendancy to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Distribution of injected fuel on intake stroke has a significant effect on homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. These results provide the information on macroscopic wall-wet growth in the cylinder and design factors for developing GDI injector.
Combustion characteristics of diesel engine depends on mixture formation process during Ignition delay and premixed flame region. Fuel and air mixture formation has a great influence on the exhaust emission. Therefore, the present study focused on the combustion mechanism of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine. This study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of direct injection type HCCI engine using a visualization engine. To investigate the combustion characteristics, we measured cylinder pressure and calculated heat release rate. In addition, we investigated the flame development process by using visualization engine system. From the experimental result of HCCI engine, we observed that cool flame was always appeared in HCCI combustion and magnitude of cool flame was proportional to magnitude of hot flame. And we also found that fuel injection timing is more effective to increase lean homogeneous combustion performance than intake air temperature. Since increasing the intake air temperature improved fuel vaporization before the fuel atomizes, we concluded that increasing the temperature has disadvantage fur homogeneous premixed combustion.
