  • This paper presents the results of plate loading test and discontinuum analysis, carried out to study the deformation behaviour and determine the deformation modulus of !rletamorphic andesitic tuff found at the site of a underground oil storage facility in Korea. In the plate loading test, the maximum pressure of 14MPa was applied to the bedrock by using a flat jack(1m in diameter) and the rock anchor system for the reaction against the applied pressure. The values of deformation modulus obtained from this test were compared with those of laboratory test, biaxial test and pressuremeter test. The deformation modulus from plate loading test was generally about half of the intact rock modulus, and the mass modulus of the bedrock at the test site may be affected by discontinuities and ranges between 25 and 350pa. Discontinuum analysis was also performed to simulate plate loading test and study the influence of discontinuities on the deformability of rock mass by simulating the presence of joints at the test area.

  • The study that unconfined compression strength of intact rock which is the most important factor to determine the bearing capacity effects discontinuities in rock mass has been carried out actively so far. However, the study which is related to lithological characters such as vesicle which is one of the primary characteristics of Basalt has barely been conducted. On this study, We have analyzed the correlation-ship between vesicle and unconfined compression strength and the effect on the bearing capacity, based on the reviewing on the changes of unconfined compression strength as the amount of vesicle of Basalt. It is impossible to analyze the amount of vesicle of Basalt as measuring unit. So it was analyzed by the ratio of the core sample's surface area and another area that vesicle takes up. Also, unconfined compression strength was calculated by point load test and unconfined compression strength test. The analysis shows that vesicle area ratio and unconfined compression strength have the exponential relationship and vesicle area ration is the factor to determine the bearing capacity of Basalt. It is considered that the reliability of calculating of the bearing capacity of Basalt will be improved as we study the correlation-ship between the vesicle area ratio and rock mass grade hereafter.

  • In this study, a procedure was introduced to estimate strength and deformation modulus of the 3-D discrete fracture network(DFN) systems using the distinct element method(DEM). Fracture entities were treated as non-persistent square planes in the DFN systems. Systematically generated fictitious fractures having similar mechanical characteristics of intact rock were combined with non-persistent real fractures to create polyhedral blocks in the analysis domain. Strength and deformation modulus for 10 m cube domain of various deterministic and stochastic 3-D DFN systems were estimated using the DEM to explore the applicability of suggested method and to examine the effect of fracture geometry on strength and deformability of DFN systems. The suggested procedures were found to effective in estimating anisotropic strength and deformability of the 3-D DFN systems.

  • Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is being used increasingly in geotechnical design practice worldwide, and is expected to completely replace the current Allowable Stress Design (ASD) method in the near future. LRFD has advantages over ASD in that it allows the design of superstructures and substructures at a consistent reliable level by quantification of failure probability based on reliability analysis. At present, resistance factors for cast-in-place piles embedded in rocks are determined by AASHTO only for the intact rock conditions. In Korea, however, most of the bedrocks in which piles are embedded are heavily weathered. Thus, this study will try to determine the resistance factors of heavily weathered rocks (so-called intermediate goo-materials). To this aim, reliability analysis was carried out to evaluate the resistance factors of cast-in-place piles embedded in intermediate geo-materials in Korea. Pile load test data of 21 cast-in-place piles of 4 construction sites were used for the analysis. Depending on the method which calculates the pile capacities, the resulting resistance factors ranged between 0.1 and 0.6.

  • A kinematically constrained microplane constitutive model is developed for intact granite. The model is verified by fitting the experimented data of Westerly granite and Bonnet granite. Using the model with the standard finite element method, the behavior of the intact granite subjected blasting impact is studied. What is studied includes the attenuation of the blasting waves, the size of the fractured zone and the effect of the charge condition to avoid overbreak of the rock mass. The model developed captures the energy loss due to the inelastic behavior and the microcracking of granite during blasting very well. The attenuation of the blasting waves calculated based on the model is much more than that based on the linear-elastic constitutive law. The size of damaged (or fractured) zone is calculated directly from the principal strain as blasting impact is spreading, not like in the case with the linear elasticity model.

  • It is considered in this paper that the main causes of tunnel collapse during the construction were the insufficiency of data of geotechnical investigations, or their limits due to special ground condition such as its heterogeneity and anisotropy It is thought that safety of ground can be affected by the geological conditions such as presences of discontinuities in good intact rocks, and considered to be necessary that awareness of the conditions of discontinuities in advance is important to apply adequate reinforcement measures. It is also shown that a serious accident had occurred because of the unawareness of the permeable alluvial deposits at the top of the tunnel. And it is shown that the example of application of the results of geotechnical investigation such as face-mapping, pilot boring etc. during tunnel construction, and a serious deformation of tunnel under special geological condition. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to perform an adequate geotechnical investigation to confirm the geotechnical conditons of ground before design, and supplimentary investigation is also needed depending on conditions for safe and econonic construction.

  • A geological repository system consists of a disposal canister with packed spent fuel, buffer material, backfill material, and intact rock. The buffer is indispensable to assure the disposal safety of high-level radioactive waste. Since the heat generated from spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister is released to the surrounding buffer materials, the thermal properties of the buffer material are very important in determining the entire disposal safety. Especially, since thermal expansion can cause thermal stress to the intact rock mass in the near-field, it is very important to evaluate thermal expansion characteristics of bentonite buffer materials. Therefore, this paper presents a thermal expansion coefficient prediction model of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials which is a Ca-bentonite produced in South Korea. The linear thermal expansion coefficient was measured considering heating rate, dry density and temperature variation using dilatometer equipment. Thermal expansion coefficient values of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials were $4.0{\sim}6.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$. Based on the experimental results, a non-linear regression model to predict the thermal expansion coefficient was suggested and fitted according to the dry density.

  • This study was conducted to suggest a method to determine weighting values of each parameter of the RMR system considered with geologic characteristics of a study area. This study reviewed the weighting values of the RMR system for the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks distributed in Ulsan area. Based on the data of field survey at the study area, a multiple regression analysis was used to set up an optimal weighting values of the RMR parameters. For the multiple regression analysis, each parameter of the RMR and the slope gradient were regarded as the independent variable and the dependent variable, respectively. The analysis result suggested a modified weighting values of the RMR parameters as follows; 30 for the intact strength of rock; 18 for RQD; 8 for spacing of discontinuities; 32 for the condition of discontinuities; and 12 for ground water.

  • The uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of intact rocks are the most important analytical parameters for design of rock mass structures. But the preparation of the samples for uniaxial compressive test is a hard and time consuming task. By using ultrasonic test, engineers can predict the analytical parameters that is the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. The uniaxial compressive test and ultrasonic test were carried out 115 samples of igneous rocks, 74 samples of metamorphic rocks and 55 samples of sedimentary rocks and, after regression analysis of the test results, best fit equations for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus are proposed. In order to obtain a better correlations coefficient between uniaxial compressive strength and P-wave velocity, the P-wave velocity were multiplied by density values. The proposed equations for predicting uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus using ultrasonic test provide reliable results.
