  • The insulation of a building envelope influences the hygrothermal performance as well as the thermal performance of the building. While most of Korean wood frame houses have an interior insulation system, the exterior insulation system with high thermal performance has recently been applied. While it can be effective in energy savings for better insulation performance, without consideration of the moisture, condensation and mould growth can occur. Therefore, in this study, hygrothermal behaviour, water content, and mould growth were analyzed using hygrothermal simulation of an exterior wall of a wood frame house with which the interior insulation and exterior insulation systems were applied. The wall layer included Wall A (Interior insulation) and Wall B (Exterior insulation). The U-values were identified as 0.173 and $0.157W/m^2K$, respectively. The total water content and OSB absolute water content of Wall A were confirmed to be higher than those of Wall B, but the absolute water content did not exceed the reference value of 20%. The moisture content of the two walls was determined to be stable in the selected areas. However, mould growth risk analysis confirmed that both Wall A and Wall B were at risk of mould growth. It was confirmed that as the indoor setting temperature decreased, the mould index and growth rate in the same area increased. Therefore, the mould growth risk was affected more by indoor and outdoor climate conditions than by the position of the insulation. Consequently, the thermal performance of Wall B was superior to that of Wall A but the hygrothermal performances were confirmed to be similar.

  • The IIS(Internal Insulation System) is applied in most Korean apartment buildings which are the most common type of residential buildings. Consequently, there are many cases in which the layer of insulation is disconnected by the structural components at the wall-slab and wall-wall joints in the envelope. These joints become thermal bridges where the risk of heat loss increases. It is expected that the EIFS(External Insulation and Finish System) is the solution to this problem. In this study, annual heating and cooling loads of apartment buildings with IIS and EIFS were compared using Design Builder program in order to evaluate the thermal storage effect of EIFS where the concrete thermal mass is located inside of the insulation material. As results, the apartment building with EIFS could reduce annual heating and cooling loads by 2.4% and 4.1%, respectively.

  • The primary insulation system used in an oil-filled transformer is kraft paper, wood, porcelain and oil. Modern transformers use paper that is chemically treated to improve its tensile strength properties and resistance to aging caused by immersion in oil. But these insulation papers are mainly aged to thermal stress. Over the course of the insulation paper and oil's life it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. Its interaction with the steel of the tank and core plus the copper and aluminium of the windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to decay. High temperature have an effect on mechanical strength of cellulous paper using the layer insulation. We made two aging cell in which thermal aging tests of insulation papers and mineral oil are conducted. It is measured dielectric strength, number of acid, moisture, etc. of insulation paper and oil aged in the aging cells.

  • A Bi-2223 tape has been developed for low-field Power applications such as Power cables or transformers working at liquid nitrogen temperature For such applications it is required to understand fault current characteristics of the Bi-2223 tape. In this paper we report fault current characteristics using two types of samples, straight sample and pancake coil sample. It was found that the fault current characteristics of the Bi-2223 tape are independent of external fields and frequencies . However they depend on electrical insulations and fault durations strong1y Also it was shown that the fault current characteristics in the insulated straight sample are similar to those in the pancake sample with a conductor insulation. Finally. it was shown that the Pancake sample with a layer insulation has better characteristics than that with a conductor insulation fur fault currents.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the thermal insulation performance of windows according to the formation of air layer and to evaluate its energy efficiency on a selected standard house. A thermal insulation test, KS F 2278 was used to measure U-values (Heat transmission coefficients) for the following three cases: the first case (Case 1) is a Low-E pair glass (Argon injected), the second case (Case 2) is a Low-E pair glass with the air cap attached on the glass surface, and the third case (Case 3) is a Low-E pair glass, on the frame of which the air cap is attached. The evaluation of the energy efficiency was conducted according to a building energy calculation method from ISO 13790, calculation of energy use for space heating and cooling, using the U-values obtained from the thermal insulation tests. As results of the tests, the U-values of Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3 were $1.668W/m^2{\cdot}K$, $1.568W/m^2{\cdot}K$, and $1.319W/m^2{\cdot}K$ respectively. The Case 2 had about 5.9% lower value than the Case 1, and the Case 3 had about 20.9% lower value than the Case 1. It seems that the thermal performance of the windows is attributed to an increase of the heat resistance and the thickness of air layer. An evaluation of the energy efficiency of the three cases on the selected standard house showed that the amount of heating energy demand per unit area was $7.776kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case $1,6.856kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case 2, and $4.856kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case 3. This study suggests that the formation of air layer (by using air cap) and its thickness should reduce the heat energy demand and thus improve the energy saving efficiency

  • For high voltage XLPE power cables, semiconducting layers have been applied to prevent discharge at the interface between conductor and insulation, and/or insulation and external shielding layer. The semiconducting layers may be also effective to release electrical stress in the interface. The property of semiconducting layers are significantly related to the quality and reliability of power cables. Generally, these semiconducting layers are formed by extruding, the conductibility of the material is given by the carbon black mixed with base polymer. The life of power cables is depended on the smoothness of the interface between insulation and semiconducting layer. If the smoothness is no good, the life of power cables is shorter because the electrical stress and water tree is increased. The causes of no good smoothness are the void of the interface, the protrusions, the contaminants and impurities of the semiconducting layer. The selection and dispersion of the Carbon Black is the significant factor to determine the life of power cable in the manufacturing of semiconducting compound.

  • Laminated Polypropylene Paper (LPP) and Kraft paper were used as ac power insulation for conventional cable as well as high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable because of its prominent insulating characteristics. However, researches on the use of LPP/Kraft paper in HTS cables are thinly scattered. In this paper, the effect of laminate polypropylene paper on the breakdown strength of LPP/Kraft multi-layer sample impregnated with liquid nitrogen (LN2)under ac and impulse applied voltage was studied. In addition, the breakdown strength characteristics of LPP and Kraft multi-layer sample were also investigated. It was found from the experimental data that the LPP has higher breakdown strength value than Kraft paper in ac and impulse. Especially in the ac case, the breakdown strength increases as the component ratio of LPP in the LPP/Kraftsample increases and slightly affected by the inserting position of LPP but in impulse case, the breakdown strength strongly depends on the number of LPP and the relative position of LPP.
