Mineral oil has been widely used as an insulating oil for electrical transformers for a long time, but the necessity of employing new insulation oil such as vegetable oil has been increased due to urgent needs for the biodegradability when it leaks and also for the thermal stability at a higher operation temperature. Although specific periods are required between the production and consumption, there are still short of the data to prove the insulation oils' storage stability depending upon various circumstances and their resources. Thus, this paper demonstrates the insulation oils' oxidation characteristics of both mineral and vegetable oils when each was exposed to different environments for 12 weeks. From this test, some properties including total acid number, water content and dielectric breakdown were changed under specific conditions and resources. Vegetable oils showed higher hydrophilicity and water saturation than those of mineral oils due to their molecular compositions. Under sunlight exposure condition, all insulation oils oxidized and changed their properties when exposing to the direct light, regardless of the resource used.

We have proposed a hydrogen detection sensor based on a Pd (palladium)-coated, single-mode, optical fiber. The experimental results demonstrated that the sensor could detect hydrogen in air as well as in insulation oil. The influence of Pd film thickness and environmental temperature on response time and sensitivity was analyzed. The reflected optical power at the optical-fiber/Pd interface decreased as the concentration of hydrogen increased, in both air and the insulation oil. The sensor showed 0.75 dB of optical power variation when the concentration of dissolved hydrogen was saturated in the insulation oil.

This paper dealt with the acoustic detection of partial discharge (PD) in insulation oil for insulation diagnostics of oil immersed transformers. Electrode systems such as needle to plane, plane to plane, and floating were fabricated to simulate some defects in transformers. A wide band acoustic emission(AE) sensor with the frequency ranges of 100 kHz~1 MHz and a narrow band AE sensor with the resonant frequency of 140 kHz were used in the experiment. Also, a decoupler and an amplifier were designed to detect and amplify the acoustic signal only. The decoupler separates acoustic signal from DC source without any distortion, and the amplifier has the gain of 40 dB in frequency ranges of 11 kHz~4 MHz. In the experiment, frequency components and propagation characteristics of acoustic signal were analyzed, and an algorithm of positioning of PD occurrence by the time difference of arrival was proposed. From the results, the frequency components of the acoustic signal exist from 50 kHz to 200 kHz and the positioning error of PD calculated by three AE sensors was within 1%.

This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of electromagnetic waves radiated from a partial discharge (PD) source in insulation oil to apply condition monitoring of oil-immersed transformers. Two types of narrow-band monopole antennas with the resonant frequency of a 500 MHz and a 1 GHz were designed and fabricated. Also, a needle-plane electrode system was manufactured to simulate PDs and the curvature radius of the needle is 10 ${\mu}m$ and the diameter of the plane is 60 mm. Electromagnetic wave was measured by the PD measurement system with the monopole antennas. Detection sensitivity of the fabricated antenna was compared for the same PD magnitude; 620 $mV_{peak}$ for the 500 MHz antenna and 960 $mV_{peak}$ for the 1 GHz antenna to the PD magnitude of 74 pC. Consequently, the 1 GHz monopole antenna is more effective to detect PDs in oil-immersed transformers.
The impact of the convected charges, which is caused by the electrification phenomina, in the oil-paper insulation systems of power transformers has been numerically investigated using FEM. The potential distribution of the oil-paper insulation system is assumed to be governed by three equations instead of the classical Laplace equation. When the charge density of oil and the conduction current are kept high, the field distortion or the interrace in a power transformer is considerably distorted due to the convected charges.
Practical disposal of transformer insulation oil laden with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) by a chemical treatment has been studied in field work. The transformer insulation oil containing PCBs was treated by the required amounts of PEG (polyethylene glycol) and KOH, along with different reaction conditions such as temperatures and times. The reaction of PEG with PCBs under basic condition produces arylpolyglycols, the products of nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Removal efficiencies of PCBs in insulation oil before and after chemical treatment were examined. The removal efficiency of PCBs was very low at lower temperatures of 25 and $50^{\circ}C$. Under the reaction condition of PEG 600/KOH/$100^{\circ}C$/2hr, removal efficiency of PCBs was approximately 70%, showing completely removal of PCBs containing 7~9 chlorines on biphenyl frame which appear later than PCB IUPAC Number 183 (2,2',3,4,4',5',6-heptaCB) in retention time of GC/ECD. However, when increasing the reaction temperature and time to $150^{\circ}C$ and 4 hours, removal efficiency of PCBs reached 99.99% without any formation of PCDDS/PCDFs during the process. Such reaction conditions were verified by several official analytical institutions. In studying the reaction of PEG with PCBs, it confirmed that the process of chemical treatment led to less chlorinated PCBs through a stepwise process with the successive elimination of chlorines.

Pressboard is used for insulation oil-immersed equipment such as transformer. It's low cost, good electrical properties when immersed in oil, ease of storage and installation, and general reliability have made it virtually a universal choice. This study has examined fabricating specimen and specimen characteristics of pressboard.

Electrical insulation is one of the most important part in a high voltage apparatus. Recently, researchers are interested in the environmental friendly vegetable oil from environmental viewpoint. Accelerated aging transformer insulating material in vegetable oil was compared to that of mineral oil. Accelerated aging oil samples produced in the oven at $140^{\circ}C$ for 500, 1000, 1500, 2000hours. And Real transformer insulation oils samples of vegetable oil and mineral oil were aged by thermal cycles repeating from $30^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Samples were analyzed at 42, 63, 93, 143, 190, 240, 300 cycles. The mineral and vegetable insulating oils were investigated for breakdown voltage, water content, total acid number, viscosity, volume resistivity, insulating paper and oil permittivity, and dissolved gas analyses. The breakdown voltage of the vegetable insulating oil is higher than that found for the mineral oil; the accelerated aging progress decreased the breakdown voltage. The vegetable oil had a higher water saturation than the mineral oil; the vegetable oil has the superior water characteristics and breakdown voltage. And high viscosity of vegetable oil, care has to be taken, especially when designing the cooling system for a large transformer.

Dissolved gas in oil analysis has been used for fault diagnosis of oil immersed insulation. In this paper to improve the reliability in deciding the degradation causes of the oil immersed insulation, we carried out electrical and thermal degradations for the insulations, and analyzed the characteristics of dissolved gases distribution on each situation. As a result more reliable faults discrimination is possible if we use the interrelation of factors like key gases and gas compositions of hydrocarbon gases and ratios of CO/$CO_2$.

The best plan to reduce the building energy consumption is that the insulation performance should be improved because the insulation and airtight of building envelopes have an effect on the energy consumption basically. New insulation materials, which have the high performance and are above insulation standard, have been developed steadily. Because there are not studies on the building energy rating system and economic evaluation considering new insulation materials, these matters should be studied. In result alternatives, which applied 6 high performance material each, reduce the annual heating energy and raise the building energy rating. Applying the vacuum insulation material(Case 1, 2) and vacuum or triple glazing can retrieves the investment with $120 and $140$\sim$150 per barrel each.
