  • Hwa-byung is a form of psychogenic illness among people in Korea and is listed as a culture-bound syndrome of Korea in the DSM-IV. Despite increased clinical researches for Hwa-byung in the oriental medicine of Korea, there has been no agreement of pattern identification for Hwa-byung. The purpose of this study is to develop a standard instrument of pattern identification for Hwa-byung which will be applied to clinical research. The items and structure of the instrument were based on review of published literature. The advisor committee on this study was organized by 15 neuropsychiatry professors of 11 oriental medical colleges nationwide. The experts attended 2 consultation meetings and discussed developing the instrument. and we also took professional advices by e-mail. The results were as follows; First, we divided the symptoms and signs of Hwa-byung into five pattern identification - stagnation of liver Qi, flare-up of the liver fire, disharmony between heart and kidney, deficiency of both Qi and blood, malfunction of gallbladder due to phlegm stagnation. Second, we got the mean weights to each symptom of five pattern identification which had been scored on a 5-point scale - ranging from 0 to 4 by the 15 experts. Third, we made out the Korean instrument of the pattern identification for Hwa-byung. It was composed of 34 questions and decided on question-and-answer form. Though there are some limits in this study, the instrument of pattern identification for Hwa-byung is meaningful and expected to be applied to the subsequent research. And also, we hope to improve the instrument and make up for this study through various research and discussion.

  • The on-orbit test simulation for predicting the instrument directional responsivity was conducted by the Monte Carlo based integrated ray tracing (IRT) computation technique and analytic flux-to-signal conversion algorithms. For the on-orbit test simulation, the Sun model consists of the Lambertian scattering sphere and emitting spheroid rays, the Amon-Ra instrument is a two-channel including a broadband scanning radiometer (energy channel) and an imager with ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ FOV (visible channel). The solar radiation produced by the Sun model is directed to the instrument viewing port and traced through the dual channel optical train. The instrument model is rotated on its rotation axis and this gives a slow scan of the Sun model over the full field of view. The direction of the incident lights are fed with scanned images obtained from the visible channel instrument. The instrument responsivity was computed by the ratio of the incident radiation input to the instrument output. In the radiometric simulation, especially, measured BRDF of the 3D CPC was used for scattering effects on radiometry. With diamond turned 3D CPC inner surface, the anisotropic surface scattering model from the measured data was applied to ray tracing computation. The technical details of the on-orbit test simulation are presented together with field-of-view calibration plan.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the KOMPSAT satellite to perform global ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. The instrument images the ocean surface using a wisk-broom motion with a swath width of 800km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of < 1km over the entire field of view (FOV). The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-board image data compression/storage. The instrument also performs sun and dark calibration for on-board instrument calibration. The OSMI instrument is a multi-spectral imager covering the spectral range from 400nm to 900nm using CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). The ocean colors are monitored using 6 spectral channels that can be selected via ground commands. KOMPSAT satellite with OSMI was integrated and the satellite level environment tests including instrument aliveness/functional test, such as launch environment, on-orbit environment (Thermal/Vacuum) and EMI/EMC test were performed at KARl. Test results met the requirements and the OSMI data were collected and analyzed during each test phase. The instrument is launched on the KOMPSAT satellite on December 21,1999 and is scheduled to start collecting ocean color data in the early 2000 upon completion of on-orbit instrument checkout.

  • This study aims to develop an instrument for measuring high school students' action competence on climate change (ACoCC). The instrument is defined as the construct comprised of seven factors and thirty-five items and takes approximately 15 minutes to fill out. A panel of experts and students' content validation were undertaken to modify the items. Five hundred and twenty-eight first and second graders in Korean high schools participated in the instrument survey. To assess the reliability and validity of ACoCC instrument, item analysis (mean, skewness, kurtosis, item-total correlation), internal consistency estimate, and confirmatory factor analysis were used. It was appropriate to use the 7-dimensional ACoCC instrument (knowledge about climate change, climate change sensibility, reflection, communication, integrated thinking, willingness, decision making), with 35 items for high school students. The following instrument was self-report given in the 5-point Likert scale (1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=neutral, 4=agree, 5=strongly agree). The internal consistency coefficient was shown as a whole was shown as 0.953, and the subscale's internal consistency coefficient ranged from 0.786 to 0.862.

  • The increase in assertive and unilateral measures represents a key feature of the recent global trade environment. Against this backdrop, the EU is pushing to introduce the so-called "anti-coercion instrument(the instrument)," which aims to allow unilateral countermeasures in the event of economic coercion or threats from third countries. This paper examines the recent assertive trade environment and the legislative background of the instrument. It evaluated the necessity of and concerns arising from the instrument by comparing the existing EU trade policy, i.e., Trade Barrier Regulation (TBR). In addition, the paper aims to analyze the permissibility of the instrument under the WTO system, especially in the context of the principle of "strengthening of the multilateral system." Finally, the paper draws implications of the instrument in terms of our domestic policies that can effectively address economic threats or trade friction in the growing geopolitical crisis.
