  • Here, we investigated the observed sunspot areas with respect to latitudes using the Hilbert transform technique. Conventional study of the cyclic patterns of sunspots is based on the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, which only obtains the amplitude information. In comparison, our approach characterizes the amplitude as well as the phase of solar activity. We demonstrated the solar North-South asymmetry in the instantaneous amplitude by analyzing daily sunspot data set spanning from the solar cycles 11 to 24. Our findings confirm that the northern hemisphere is dominant in the solar cycles 14, 15, 16, 18, and 20. Unlike the amplitude, the North-South asymmetry in the period of solar activity could not be established. We have also found that the standard deviation as a measure of fluctuation in the phase derivative is minimum in the latitude band 10° < l < 20°, and the fluctuations obtained for latitudes above 30° are considerable.

  • A visualization study was carried out to investigate the effects of phase difference qualitatively by examining wake pattern on the phase difference of a dragonfly type wing model. The model was built with scaled-up, flapping wings composed of a paired wing with fore- and hind-wings in tandem that mimick the wing form of a dragonfly. The present study was conducted by using the smoke-wire technique and an electronic device below the tandem wings was mounted to find the exact wing position angles. Uncertainties in wing position angle are about $\pm$$1.0^{\cire}$ and instantaneous wing positional angle varies from $-16.5^{\cire}$ to $+22.8^{\cire}$. The tests were made at phase differences between the fore-wing and hind-wing at $0^{\cire}$, $90^{\cire}$, $180^{\cire}$ and $270^{\cire}$. The results show that Karman vortex structures were produced at phase differences of $90^{\cire}$, $180^{\cire}$ and $270^{\cire}$, but Karman vortex structures were not observed at the phase difference of $0^{\cire}$.

  • The neutral section was installed in order to prevent conflict with different phase angle source in electric railway catenary system. The speed of electric train reduced due to coasting operation by notch off when it passed the neutral section. And, the catenary wire was damaged and the accident might be happened because of the arc generation when the electric train passed the neutral section with notch off condition. The inrush current of main transformer installed tiling train is analyzed during the operation of MCB(main circuit break) passing through the neutral section. The instantaneous waveform of load current were analyzed in case of powering and regenerative braking. Inrush current waveform with run of AC railway train showed that inrush current waveform and harmonics, the inrush current generated from main transformer in train has bad effects on power quality problem. In order to reduce these inrush currents, the MCB is connected when the phase angle of voltage is 90 degree. This paper is to measure inrush current and harmonics in main transformer of high speed train in neutral section of electric railway. This measurement report is used to control minimum inrush current in algorithm and power phase angle.

  • This paper presented an evaluation method for the efficiency uncertainty of a three-phase induction motor using finite element analysis. The motor efficiency in the finite element analysis is calculated by the loss separation method as in the actual test. In the process of evaluating the efficiency uncertainty, the difference between the finite element analysis and the actual test is the method of calculating the type-A / B standard uncertainty of the input quantity to estimate the efficiency and each losses. For the input quantities which can confirm the instantaneous values with respect to time, the type-A standard uncertainty in the finite element analysis is calculated from the RMS values or average values having separate periods in the steady state. And, the type-B standard uncertainty in the finite element analysis is assumed to be zero. Also, this paper compared and analyzed the efficiency uncertainty evaluated by the proposed method and the efficiency uncertainty through the actual test.

  • The droplet and the turbulent characteristics of a counterflowing internal mixing pneumatic nozzle mainly focused. The measurements were made using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer under the different air pressures. The nozzle with tangential-drilled holes at an angle of 30 to the central axis has been designed. The spatial distributions of velocities, fluctuating velocities, droplet diameters and SMD were quantitatively and qualitatively fluctuating velocities were substantially higher than the radial and the tangential ones. This implies that the disintegration process is enhanced with the higher air pressure. The larger droplets were detected near the spray centerline at the upstream while the smaller ones were generated at the downstream. This was attributed to the lower rates of spherical particles which were not subject to instantaneous breakup. However, substantial increases in SMD from the central part tower spray periphery were predictable in downstream regions.

  • In this paper, CPLD(Complex Programmable Logic Device) controller designed with VHDL is developed. With the controller, the harmonics from 3 phase diode rectifier are suppressed and power factor is also improved. The input current of diode rectifier is drawn from the ac mains only during the period in the ac cycle when the instantaneous voltage is greater than the voltage across the dc-link capacitor. The three bidirectional switches rated at very small power are installed in a conventional three phase diode rectifier. Using CPLD controller, an idle current charges to capacitors continuously. Results of simulation and experimental demonstrate a reduction of harmonics, a improvement of power factor and THD.

  • Recently, PWM Buck AC-AC Converter is widely employed in various industrial applications such as voltage and power regulator, electronic transformer, phase shifter and so on. This paper presents static and dynamic modeling and complete characteristic analysis of a PWM Buck AC-AC converter. Firstly, the three phase converter system is modelled by using DQ transformation whereby we can obtain basic characteristic equations such as voltage gain and power factor as well as state equation and transfer function for control. Secondly, based on the analysis, the feedforward-feedback control technique is also proposed to obtain instantaneous duty level change whereby very fast dynamic response is achieved. Finally, the experimental results show the validity of the modeling, analysis and control.

  • An optical fiber probe system for measuring the local void fraction in the air-water two-phase flow was developed with a 1550 nm light source. Air was injected through a nozzle placed in the center of the bottom wall of a water-filled cylindrical tank. The optical fiber probe having a diameter of $125{\mu}m$ was sufficiently thin to resolve the air-water interface of the bubbly flows. To verify the performance of the optical fiber probe, the synchronized high speed visualization study using a high speed camera was carried out. Comparison between the optical signals and the instantaneous bubble diffraction images confirms that the optical fiber probe is very accurate to measure the void fraction in two-phase flows. The estimated bubble diameter and the rising velocity by the optical fiber probe have 1% and 5% of accuracy, respectively.

  • Turbulent wake behind a ship propeller has been investigated using the adaptive hybrid 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry). 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured according to 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. As the tip vortex evolves downstream, the slipstream is contracted and the turbulent intensity is decreased with viscous dissipation and turbulent diffusion.

  • This paper deals with a single-phase dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) with a quasi Z-source topology. The proposed system based on a single-phase quasi Z-source PWM ac-ac converter which have features such as the input voltage and output voltage are sharing ground, and input current operates in continuous current mode(CCM). For the detection of voltage sag-swell, peak voltage detection method is applied. Also, the circuit principles of the proposed system are described. During the 60% severe voltage sag and 30% voltage swell, the proposed system controls the adding or missing voltage and maintains the rated voltage of sinusoidal waveform at the terminals of the critical loads. Finally, PSIM simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed concept and theoretical analysis.
