  • Combustion instability is a major issue in design of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. Combustion instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to develop a technique to predict self-excited combustion instability of gas turbine combustors, a new stability analysis method based on the transfer matrix method is developed. The method views the combustion system as a one-dimensional acoustic system with a side branch and describes the heat source as the input to the system. This approach makes it possible to use the advantages of not only the transfer matrix method but also well-established classic control theories. The approach is applied to a simple gas turbine combustion system to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the approach.

  • Flow instability in the rocket turbo pump system can be caused by various reasons such as valve, orifice and venturi, etc. The inception of cavitation, especially in the propellant feeding system, is the primary cause of the mass flow and pressure oscillation due to cyclic formation and depletion of cavitation. Meanwhile, the main propellant in liquid rocket engine is the cryogenic one, which is very sensitive to temperature variation, and the variation of propellant properties caused by thermodynamic effect should be accounted for in the flow analysis. The present study focuses on the formation of cryogenic cavitations by adopting IDM model suggested by Shyy and coworkers. Also, the flow instability was investigated in the downstream of orifice by using a developed numerical code. Calculation results show that cryogenic cavitations can lead to flow instability resulting in mass flow fluctuations due to pressure oscillations. And the prediction of cavitations in cryogenic fluid is of vital importance in designing feeding system of LRE.

  • Here, the dynamic instability characteristics of aero-thermo-mechanically stressed functionally graded plates are investigated using finite element procedure. Temperature field is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varied in thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to simple power law distribution. For the numerical illustrations, silicon nitride/stainless steel is considered as functionally graded material. The aerodynamic pressure is evaluated based on first-order high Mach number approximation to the linear potential flow theory. The boundaries of the instability region are obtained using the principle of Bolotin's method and are conveniently represented in the non-dimensional excitation frequency-load amplitude plane. The variation dynamic instability width is highlighted considering various parameters such as gradient index, temperature, aerodynamic and mechanical loads, thickness and aspect ratios, and boundary condition.

  • Subtalar joint instability (STI) is one of the causes of persistent hindfoot pain even after treatment for ankle instability. Diagnosis of STI is often neglected because it is a poorly understood concept. However, understanding of the anatomy and injury mechanism of the subtalar joint is a prerequisite of appropriate treatment. Patients with STI usually complain of several symptoms, such as recurrent sprains or a giving way sensation and rolling over. Recently, various diagnostic tools and treatment methods have been investigated. This study was undertaken with the aim of helping clinicians by providing a comprehensive understanding of STI.

  • Chronic lateral ankle instability occurs in 10% to 20% of individuals after acute ankle sprain. The management of chronic lateral ankle instability is traditionally conservative treatment in the acute phase. On the other hand, surgical intervention is considered if conservative treatment fails and the symptoms are ongoing. This review focuses on the surgical approaches to treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability, including $Brostr{\ddot{o}}m$ surgical techniques, with a review of the traditional procedure and newer techniques.

  • Sizing the tube inlet orifice of a Once-Through Steam Generator (OTSG) is important to protect the integrity of the tubes from thermal cycling and vibration wear. In this study, a new sizing criterion is proposed for the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability in an OTSG. A perturbation method is used to capture the essential parts of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena of the parallel channel instability. The perturbation model of the heat transfer regime boundaries is identified as a missing part in existing models for sizing the OTSG tube inlet orifice. Limitations and deficiency of the existing models are identified and the reasons for the limitations are explained. The newly proposed model can be utilized to size the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability without excessive engineering margin.

  • The purpose of the present work was to study the dynamic instability of a three-layered, symmetric sandwich beam subjected to a periodic axial load resting on nonlinear elastic foundation. A higher-order theory was used for analysis of sandwich beams with soft core on elastic foundations. In the higher-order theory, the Reddy's third-order theory was used for the face sheets and quadratic and cubic functions were assumed for transverse and in-plane displacements of the core, respectively. The elastic foundation was modeled as nonlinear's type. The dynamic instability regions and free vibration were investigated for simply supported conditions by Bolotin's method. The results showed that the responses of the dynamic instability of the system were influenced by the excitation frequency, the coefficients of foundation, the core thickness, the dynamic and static load factor. Comparison of the present results with the published results in the literature for the special case confirmed the accuracy of the proposed theory.

  • In this study, the combustion instability characteristics according to the change in the hydrogen ratio in the fuel in the single nozzle system of the hydrogen-natural gas mixed gas turbine for power generation was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element analysis-based Helmholtz solver. This combustor shows the instability characteristics in which mode transition occurs from a mode having a low amplitude near 70 Hz to a mode having a high amplitude of 250 Hz or higher as the hydrogen fraction in the fuel increases. The current modeling results are found to reasonably predict the main characteristics of the change in measured instability frequency and growth rate with the change in fuel composition.

  • Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.
