Shear Strength Evaluation of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams with Conventional Reinforcements Details (일반 철근 배근 상세를 갖는 강섬유 보강 콘크리트 연결보의 전단강도 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to prevent diagonal tension failure of existing conventional coupling beams, increase the shear strength of conventional coupling beams, and quantitatively evaluate the increase. Steel fibers can improve shear strength and partially change the failure mechanism, but this is the result of research on general RC beams and columns, and research on the shear strength enhancement of conventional coupling beams for steel fiber reinforced concrete is still lacking. Therefore, in order to confirm the increased shear strength caused by steel fiber and the resulting change in failure mechanism, three specimens were fabricated with the steel fiber volume fraction as a variable (0%, 1%, 2%) and repeated loading experiments were performed. As a result, the shear strength of the specimens reinforced with steel fibers (1%, 2%) increased as the shear resistance contribution of concrete increased after the maximum strength was developed compared to the specimens without it (0%).

  • In this study, a numerical analysis technique was newly developed to evaluate the damage propagation characteristics of concrete structures. To do this, numerical techniques are incorporated for the concrete members up to the compressive damage due to the bending compressive forces after the tensile crack based on the deformation mechanism. Especially, for the compressive damage stage after the tensile crack, the crack propagation process will be analyzed numerically using the concept of an equivalent plastic hinged length. Using this concept, it can be established that section forces, such as axial forces and the moment cracks takes place, can be related to the width of the crack making it possible to analyze the crack extension.

  • A new jointing method using steel cramps with a unique configuration was developed for the field joint of precast deck slabs of highway bridges. In this jointing method, the looped distribution bars are connected by the cramps to the main reinforcements. Therefore, the joint can transfer the bending moment and shearing force through the interlocking effect caused by the cramps, and it is both excellent in installation on-site and economical compared with the loop joint currently in use. In order to confirm the bending and shear capacities and to clarify the failure mechanism of the joint, a series of static loading tests were carried out. From the results of these experimental studies, it was clarified that the cramp joint has enough load carrying capacity being equivalent to the loop joint.

  • This study look into the mechanisms of growth and magnification of the cracks and delamination in the pre-cracked RC beams repaired with carbon fiber sheets. The experimental parameters were loading type, loading speed and crack. In the experiments, it was confirmed that a failure of beams began with development and propagation of the stepped delamination in the below the loading point due to the rapid change of shear force, but mechanisms of the failure were not influenced with loading type, loading speed and pre-cracks. Particularly, in the case of beams having the pre-cracks, growth of crack concentrated at the special crack below the loading point and led to failure of the beam by delamination due to magnification of crack.

  • In the existed study, a fire outbreak in a reinforced concrete structure looses the organism by the different contraction and expansion of hardened cement pastes and aggregate, and causes cracks by thermal stress, leading to the deterioration of the durability. So accurate diagnosis of deterioration is needed based on mechanism of fire deterioration in general concrete structures. Fundamental information and data on the Properties of concrete exposed to high temperature are necessary for accurate diagnosis of deterioration. Therefore, This study is willing to propose fundamental data for quick and accurate diagnosis of deteriorated concrete structure by fire damage with making variable concrete test specimen, exposing high temperature environment, observing the explosive spalling and examining engineering property.

  • To improve the durability of concrete structure, we usually consider the reduction of water-cement ratio, the increase of concrete cover depth and the use of mineral admixtures. The use of admixtures make concrete more durable and tighten against water in recent papers so it is needed to study more about the relationship between the admixtures and the chloride ion diffusion. Therefore we analyzed the correlation between chloride ion diffusion and physical properties such as compressive strength, void ratio, air permeability of the concrete, and tried to use them as fundamental data for analyzing chloride ion diffusion mechanism of the concrete mixed with mineral admixtures.

Effects of Air Void at the Steel-Concrete Interface on the Corrosion Initiation of Reinforcing Steel in Concrete under Chloride Exposure

  • A series of reinforced G109 type specimens was fabricated and pended with a 15 weight percent NaCl solution. Mix design variables included 1) two cement alkalinities (equivalent alkalinities of 0.32 and 1.08), 2) w/c 0.50 and 3) two rebar surface conditions (as-received and wire-brushed). Potential and macro-cell current between top and bottom bars were monitored to determine corrosion initiation time. Once corrosion was initiated, the specimen was ultimately autopsied to perform visual inspection, and the procedure included determination of the number and size of air voids along the top half of the upper steel surface. This size determination was based upon a diameter measurement assuming the air voids to be half spheres or ellipse. The followings were reached based upon the visual inspection of G109 specimens that were autopsied to date. First, voids at the steel-concrete interface facilitated passive film breakdown and onset of localized corrosion. Based upon this, the initiation mechanism probably involved a concentration cell with contiguous concrete coated and bare steel serving as cathodes and anodes, respectively. Second, the corrosion tended to initiate at relatively large voids. Third, specimens with wire-brushed steel had a lower number of voids at the interface for both cement alkalinities, suggesting that air voids preferentially formed on the rough as-received surface compared to the smooth wire brushed one.

  • The prototype SFR has currently been under design by KAERI. The size of its major components is much larger than that of APR1400 and high temperature materials are applied for it. The increased size of components and those specific materials effect on material procurement, manufacturing process and fabrication facilities. The manufacturing methods are studied for Reactor Vessel/Guard Vessel, Control Rod Drive Mechanism, Heat Exchanger, Primary Pump, Reactor Vessel Internals, Steam Generator and In-Vessel Transfer Machine. The proper manufacturing methods are suggested for each component including side forging technology for ultra large forgings of Reactor Vessel to minimize the weld seams on which In-service Inspection should be conducted.

Development of the Expert System for Management on Slab Bridge Decks (슬래브교 상판의 전문가 시스템 개발)

  • The purpose of this study makes a retrofit and rehabilitation practice trough the analysis and the improvement for the underlying problem of current retrofit and rehabilitation methods. Therefore, the deterioration process, the damage cause, the condition classification, the fatigue mechanism and the applied quantity of strengthening methods for slab bridge decks were analysed. Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniqures that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, a back-propagation neural network model for estimating a management on existing slab bridge decks from damage cause, damage type, and integrity assessment at the initial stsge is need. The training and testing of the network were based on a database of 36. Four different network models werw used to study the ability of the neural network to predict the desirable output of increasing degree of accuracy. The neural networks is trained by modifying the weights of the neurons in response to the errors between the actual output values and the target output value. Training was done iteratively until the average sum squared errors over all the training patterms were minimized. This generally occurred after about 5,000 cycles of training.

  • A series of three shear wall specimens were tested under constant axial stress and reversed cyclic lateral loading to evaluate the capacity of seismic retrofit proposed for the shear wall with the opening induced by remodeling. One specimen was tested in the as-built condition and the others were retrofitted prior to testing. The retrofit involved the use of carbon fiber sheets and steel plates (thickness ; 3mm) over the entire face of the wall. Specimens were 1/2-scale representations of a one-story wall in a Korean apartment building that was built in 1980. The test results showed that failure mechanism of specimens governed by shear fracture and the strength of specimens was varied with according to the retrofitting strategies.
