  • The effects of casing shapes on the interaction of the impeller and volute in a small-size turbo-compressor are investigated. Numerical analysis is conducted for the compressor with circular and single volute casings from inlet to discharge nozzle. In order to predict the flow pattern inside the entire impeller, vaneless diffuser, and casing, calculations with a multiple frame of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For incompressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and three-dimensional time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are employed. To predict the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure and loss coefficients are obtained with various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load.

  • Comprehensive investigation according to the two kinds of blades is systematically carried out for a design of the centrifugal blower. The motivation of this work is due to demand of enhanced flow rate with higher inlet pressure, such as air purifiers adopting several filters. It is observed that flow rate of the blower with forward blades is larger than that of the system with backward blades. The reason is due to larger outlet velocity from the rotating forward blades and the tendency is validated by a parallel experiment with a wind tunnel. Numerical analysis for the blower system shows detail information between the blades and inside the casing. A series of figures to show the flow details offers deep understanding of a centrifugal blower with the two different blades.

  • Mostly, water leakage took place in construction joints. In case of cable tunnels constructed by open-cut method, waterstops have been used to prevent the water leakage. But, we haven't any experience to install the waterstops in NATM cable tunnels. So, it is necessary to develope the waterstops and test the performance of it in laboratory. We manufactured cable tunnel lining quarter scale model by pouring concrete, and installed the waterstops. After filling the inside of concrete lining about two-third with water, we put the air pressure on the water, In addition, it is also carried out water leakage test for concrete lining model without waterstops. As a result, we confirmed the performance of waterstops and its adaptability. It is also tested that the performance of rubber gaskets used in concrete segments of Shield tunnelling. In addition, we determined the allowable infiltration rate for cable tunnel with non-drainage system.

  • Fuel tank sloshing noise of vehicle is caused by flow impact on the tank wall during sudden braking, and the sloshing vibration of tank wall is a coupled phenomenon of the fuel inside tank and tank wall structure. Therefore, Fluid-Structure Interface(FSI) analysis technology should be adopted to predict accurately the sloshing vibration. In this study, FSI approach was employed to analyze sloshing phenomenon for a simple tank model with velocity change of the actual vehicle test. First, the simulated results for rigid tank model were compared with those for deformable tank model. Next, influence of baffle location and shape of baffle holes on the acceleration magnitude and the maximum stress of tank wall was investigated. In addition, sloshing analysis for tank with another baffle type was carried out.

  • Experimental studies on the fabrication of sub-30 nm nanofibers using weakly two-photon induced photopolymerized region have been carried out. For the generation of nanofibers inside or outside microstructures, an over-polymerizing method involving a long exposure technique (LET) was proposed. Such nanofibers can find meaningful applications as bio-filters, mixers, and many other uses in diverse research field. A multitude of nanofibers with a notably high resolution (about 22 nm) in two-photon polymerization was achieved using the LET. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the LET can be employed for the direct fabrication of various embossing patterns by controlling the exposure duration and the interval between voxels. Thin interconnecting networks are formed regularly in the boundary of the over-polymerized region, which allows for the creation of various pattern shapes. Overall of this work, some patterns including nanofibers are fabricated by the LET.

  • This paper describes an effective utilization method of well logging data and boring cores for understanding the geology of Keoje-do area. Six holes were drilled in 1988-1989, and all rock cores were recovered. Nevertheless, seven kinds of logs were carried out in each borehole. The geologic situations of the drilling sites are accurately evaluated from a comparison between core descriptions and well logging data. Porosities and clay contents of sedimentary rocks can be calculated using the data of density and gamma-ray logs. Fractured zones are easily detected from the change in inside diameter of borehole by caliper log. Sonic, density and gamma-ray logging data clearly indicate alternated and dyke zones; the former can be detceted from an acoustic wave attenuation and a decline of compaction by sonic and density logs, the latter can be detected from the amount of potassium contents of bed rock and dyke by gamma-ray log.

  • The oxidation of methane was carried out in six different configurations of plasma reactors in order to study the radical reactions inside and outside of the plasma zone and to explore the method to control them. Various radicals and reactive molecules, such as CH, $CH_{2}$, $CH_{3}$, H, and O(from $O_{2}$) were generated in the plasma. A variety of products were produced through many competing reaction pathways. Among them. partial oxidation products were usually not favored, because the intermediates leading to the partial oxidation products could be oxidized further to carbon dioxides easily. It is important to control the free radical reactions in the plasma reactor by controlling the experimental conditions so that the reactions leading to the desired products are the major pathways.

  • In the present work, the numerical model was refined to predict the thermal analysis of energy storage in a fixed beds during charging mode. The governing energy equations of both fluid and the solid particles along with their initial and boundary conditions are derived using a two-phase, one dimensional model. The refined model is carried out by taking into account change of (air density , air specific heat) with air temperature and also by taking into considerations heat losses from bed to surrounding. Finite difference method was used to obtain solution of two governing energy equations of both fluid and solid particles through a computer program especially constructed for this purpose. The temperature field for the air and the solid are obtained, also energy stored inside the bed is computed. A comparison between refined model and non refined model is done. Finally using refined model the effect of bed material (Glass, Fine clay ,and aluminum ), and air flow rate per unit area Ga (0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 kg/$m^2$-s) on energy storage characteristics was studied.

  • This paper deals with the implementation on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) of PWM switching patterns for a voltage multilevel inverter. The reference data in main microcontroller is transmitted to the FPGA through 16 general purpose I/O ports. Herein, three-phase reference voltage signals are addressed by the last 2-bit (bit 15-14) and their data are assigned in remaining 14-bit, respectively. The carrier signals are created by 16-bit counter in up-down counting mode inside FPGA according to desirable topology. Each reference signal is compared with all carrier signals to generate corresponding PWM switching patterns for control of the multilevel inverter. Useful advantages of this scheme are easy implementation, simple software control and flexibility in adaptation to produce many PWM signals. Some simulations and experiments are carried out to validate the proposed method.

  • Particle contamination into and out of a cavity-cylindrical cavities with aspect ratios(width/depth) less than, equal to 1 and langer than 1, and also three dianensional T's attached to a cylindrical flow tube was studied numerically, using a finite difference method. In the process of unsteady particle diffusion, the particles contained in a concentration boundary layer near the tube wall plays an important role in the initial stage, after which a quasi-steady concentration profile is developed inside the cavity, resulting in an exponential change of concentration with time. Average concentration and its rate of change are observed to be closely correlated by a power law function in terms of Reynolds number and the logarithm of Schmidt number. Effects of the three parameters-Re, Sc, and aspect ratio-are analysed and well explained.
