This study was carried out to investigate the properties of soils in the sampling green tea farms and the chemical constituents of the green tea leaves at the 3 harvest stages (Ujeon ${\rightarrow}$ Sejag ${\rightarrow}$ Jungjag). The results as follows; The properties of the soils were sandy loam, loam, well drained and fertile-rich in phosphoric acids in general. The contents of chlorophyll, tannin, vitamin-c and total catechin were increased as harvest periods getting late but the contents of total nitrogen, free amino acids, theanine, caffeine were decreased on the reverse. The inorganic constituents Mg, Ca and Mn were increased as harvest periods getting late but the Na, K, B contents were decreased on the reverse. The contents of the total nitrogen, chlorophyll, total free amino acid, theanine, caffeine and total catechin and Na, Mg, Ca, B and Se were insignificant differences between Ujeon and Sejag.
This study was conducted to examine the chemical composition of kiwifruit skin, and to est its anti-microbial activities and cytotoxicities, thus, exploring ways for the economic utilization of kiwifruit skin. Four varieties of kiwifruit were examined: Daeheung, Bidan, Haegeum No.1 and Hayward. Vitamin C content in the fruit skins of Bidan, Daeheung, Haegeum No.1 and Hayward were 72.44, 67.22, 62.51 and 61.44mg/100g, respectively. Total amino acids content in the fruit skins of Bidan, Haegeum No.1, Hayward and Daeheung ere 808.31, 706.02, 629.07 and 464.83mg/100g dry weight, respectively. K and Ca content ere $17.20-45.70{\mu}g/mL$ and $4.58-10.15{\mu}g/mL$. While, other inorganic matter contents were below $4.89{\mu}g/mL$. Anti-microbial activity of kiwifruit skin extracts, in terms of the diameter of inhibition zone when tested against five gram positive and three gram negative microbial trains (even in the concentration of 2,000mg/L), was less than 14.1mm. The hyperplasia inhibition of lung cancer cells by methanol extracts from Bidan and Haegeum No.1 using concentrations of 800mg/L were 27.7% and 14.5%, however, those from Daeheung and Hayward were below 3% Consequently, it will be useful to know that kiwifruit skin can be added to processed goods which demand for higher concentrations of vitamin C, amino acids, K and Ca.
This study examined the effective utilization of pearl processing by-products. Three extracts of hot-water extract (WE), hydro-cooked extract (HE), and two-step enzymatic hydrolysate (EH) were prepared from pearl oyster muscle, and their characteristics were examined. The moisture, crude protein, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), and amino-N contents were 97.5-98.0%, 0.5-1.3%, 2.1-4.9 g/100 mL, and 35.0-74.5 g/100 mL, respectively. EH had the lowest VBN and highest amino-N contents. In addition, EH had the highest yields. In terms of its functional properties, EH inhibited angiotensin-I converting enzyme ($IC_{50}$, 1.39 mg/mL) more strongly than the other extracts ($IC_{50}$, 4.17-7.95 mg/mL). The free amino acid contents of WE, HE, and EH were 661, 470 and 1,150 mg/100 mL, respectively. Major amino acids were taurine and glutamic acid. Major inorganic ions were Na, Mg, and Ca. Contents of taste compounds, such as free amino acids, inorganic ions, and quaternary ammonium bases, differed significantly according to the extract methods. Based on the results of chemical experiments and sensory evaluation, the quality of EH was superior to the other extracts, and EH is suitable for use in natural flavoring materials.

We investigated stabilities of blue pigment extracted from Gardenia jasminoides at various conditions to check its applicability for beverages. Gardenia blue pigment with maximum absorption at 587 nm was obtained from the reaction of glycine and genipin (aglycone of geniposide). The blue pigment was found to be relatively unstable at acidic pH but very stable at alkaline conditions with half-life values of 102 days and 126 days at PH 9.0 and PH 11.0, respectively. The pigment also showed high thermal stability with half-life value of 55, 18, and 2 days at 50, 70, and 9$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The addition of inorganic ions, sugars, and amino acids to model beverage containing this blue pigment increased retention rate at room temperature while addition of vitamin C decreased the stability. The sensory evaluation of the model beverage showed that inorganic ions and amino acids increased overall acceptability, indicating that the blue pigments of Gardenia jasminoides can be used as a natural colorant for leverage.
The applicability of soil washing/flushing to treat a contaminated soil with cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) using a mixture of organic/inorganic extractant was evaluated in laboratory-scale batch and column tests. Citric acid was the effective extractant to remove Cd and Cu from the soil among various organic acids except EDTA. Carbonic acid was chosen as inorganic extractant which was not only low toxicity to environment, but also increasing soil permeability. Moreover, the optimum ratio of organic and inorganic extractant to remove Cd and Cu was 10 : 1, and this ratio of organic and inorganic extractant achieved removal efficiencies of Cd (46%) and Cu (39%), respectively. The increasing flow rate of extractant could explain the phenomena of soil packing when carbonic acid was used with organic extractant (i.e. EDTA and citric acid). Therefore, a mixture of organic extractant with inorganic extractant, especially carbonic acid, could resolve a problem of soil packing when this extractant was applied to a field application to remove Cd and Cu using in-situ soil flushing process.

Among the nutrients in feed, amino acids and minerals are important for the growth and development of pets. In particular, interest in nutritional components related to the health of pets is increasing as pet-raising households and pet food markets have recently grown. Therefore, in this study, 55 pet food products distributed in South Korea were purchased, and the content of 3 essential and conditionally essential amino acids (taurine, lysine, arginine) and 4 minerals (Ca, P, Na, K) was investigated. Among the three amino acids, arginine was found to have the highest content, and the average content was 1.79 and 1.37 % in cat and dog foods, respectively. On the other hand, the taurine content was the lowest, but it was found to be higher than the minimum requirement of 0.10 % for cats set by the American Association for Feed Control (AAFCO) and the European Federation of Pet Food Industries (FEDIAF). As a result of the four-component analysis of minerals, the content of Ca was found to be the highest, and the average content was confirmed to be 1.64 and 1.25 % in cat and dog food, respectively. On the other hand, Na was the lowest, but it was higher than the AAFCO minimum requirement and FEDIAF minimum requirement for young cat and dog food. Among all 55 samples examined, the content of the three amino acids and the four inorganic components was confirmed to be suitable for the recommended minimum intake and maximum allowable intake presented by AAFCO and FEDIAF.

Se is essential for a number of enzymes that perform important metabolic functions necessary for good health. However, people in many countries do not appear to consume adequate amounts of Se to support the maximal expression of the selenoproteins and Se retention in the body of animals and humans is dependent on the ingested Se source such as organic and inorganic Se. Therefore, this review was discussed to explore metabolic characterization regarding intestinal absorption, bioavailability and selenoprotein synthesis according to animal species such as monogastrics including human beings and ruminants. Generally, organic Se provided to animals is more effective than inorganic Se in body retention for the animal owing to the difference of manner for intestinal absorption. But, Se absorption in ruminants depending on its chemical form still remained questioned by several microbial actions and feeding regimen in the rumen. And Se absorbed through small intestine is utilized for the synthesis of selenoproteins and/or retained as selenoamino acids in the body. Retained Se in the body may be recycled to synthesize selenoproteins as lacked of dietary Se. In conclusion, desirable forms of Se ingestion in the animal may be useful for Se fortification in animal products as well as well being for humans and animals.

A protective oxide layer forms on the material surfaces of a Nuclear Power Plant during operation due to high temperature. These oxides can host radionuclides, the activated corrosion products of fission products, resulting in decommissioning workers' exposure. These deposited oxides are iron oxides such as Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and mixed ferrites such as nickel ferrites, chromium ferrites, and cobalt ferrites. Developing a new chemical decontamination technology for domestic CANDU-type reactors is challenging due to variations in oxide compositions from different structural materials in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) system. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has already developed a chemical decontamination process for PWRs called 'HyBRID' (Hydrazine-Based Reductive metal Ion Decontamination) that does not use organic acids or organic chelating agents at all. As the first step to developing a new chemical decontamination technology for the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) system, we investigated magnetite dissolution behaviors in various HyBRID inorganic acidic solutions to assess their applicability to the PHWR reactor system, which forms a thicker oxide film.

Red mud is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. In this study inorganic coagulants were prepared by leaching aluminum and iron from red mud with acids under various operating conditions. The optimum leaching efficiency of Al and Fe was obtained by contacting red mud with acids of 5M $H_2SO_4$ and 9M HCI with the ratio of 1/10(g/mL) at $85^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. In addition. the removal experiments of heavy metal ions($Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cr^{3+}$), turbidity and phosphate phosphorus($PO_4{^{3-}}-P$) in aqueous solutions were also studied in various experimental conditions. As a result, the developed coagulants are found to show a good removal performance of heavy metal ions. turbidity and phosphate phosphorus in aqueous solutions.
This study was carried out to obtain a basic informations for the improvement of human health and the development of variety through analysis of inorganic compounds, contents of amino acids and saccharids to three elephant- foots (Amporphophallus Konjac. K) collected from Kumsan, Japan and China. Mannan as a carbohydrate of major component of an elephant-food was slightly high in Kumsan than that of Japan and China variety. Degree of viscosity of an elephant-foot depends upon the soluble free sugar contents and amino acid, contents of these free sugars were high in the order of Kumsan, China and Japan elephant-foot powder. Results of analysis of inorganic compounds to an elephant-foot used; Kumsan variety was shown to be high than those of China and Japan, especially. K, P and Fe in Kumsan variety were high, while Na and Ca were appeared to be high in China elephant-foot.
