The Impact of Non-technological Innovation on the Performance of Product Innovation (비기술적 혁신이 제품혁신의 성과에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Using data from 2008 and 2010 Korean Innovation Survey, this study estimates the impacts of non-technological innovation activities on the performance of technological innovation. The study estimates the effects of the two types of innovation, organizational innovation and marketing innovation. The estimation results suggest that both organizational and marketing innovations are closely related to the success of innovative products. In particular, non-technological innovation has significant positive impacts on the share of sales with market novelties. Among individual practices in organizational innovation, only the introduction of new business practices contributes positively to the sales of innovative products. In case of marketing innovation, new marketing methods in product design, product promotion and pricing increase the share of sales from new products.

The Effects of Open Innovation on Innovation Productivity: Focusing on External Knowledge Search (기업의 개방형 혁신이 혁신 생산성에 미치는 영향: 외부 지식 탐색활동을 중심으로)

  • Extant research on firm innovation productivity is limited in measuring the innovation productivity, in which they measured firm innovation productivity by using either inputs or outputs of innovation. The present study complemented the extant research by employing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to measure firm innovation productivity. Furthermore, this paper examined the effects of firms' external knowledge search, as one of open innovation practices, on firm innovation productivity, for open innovation activities are regarded as an influencing factor on firm innovation productivity in the previous literatures. Using the data of the Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) of manufacturing industries conducted in 2008, this study developed hypotheses in which we considered not only two dimensions of external knowledge search (breadth and depth) but also two subtypes of external knowledge search (market-driven and science-driven). The results found that searching deeply and market-driven search are positively related to firm innovation productivity, but science-driven search is somewhat negatively related to firm innovation productivity. Furthermore, market-driven search can mitigate the negative effect of science-driven search on innovation productivity.

New Interpretation of Innovation Policy with Lenses of Societal Innovation Policy ('사회문제 해결형 혁신정책'과 혁신정책의 재해석)

  • The purpose of this article is to reinterpret the existing innovation policy with 'the societal innovation policy' framework. It is looking into characteristics of societal innovation policy and the prospects for socio-technical systems transition and citizen participation are discussed. After the discussion, new interpretation of innovation policy elements will be dealt with lenses of societal innovation policy. It sheds new light on the key elements of innovation policy, such as Innovation policy governance, industrial innovation policy, regional innovation policy, and infrastructure policy and suggests direction of policy improvements from societal innovation policy perspectives. This will be an opportunity to reinterpret the existing innovation policy measures and to approach to science technology innovation policy for system transition with participatory perspective.

  • This study aims at developing some hypotheses on the politics of innovation in catching-up countries. Although innovation studies of catching-up countries have studied the process of acquisition of technological capabilities, the politics of innovation was not seriously considered in those studies. This study suggests a conceptual frame-works of the innovation politics and analyses the innovation process of mobile telecommunication system in Korea. Some hypotheses on the patterns and effects of innovation politics in catching-up countries are put forward.

Institution for Regional Innovation System: The Korean case

  • There is an implicit assumption in most regional innovation policy studies that once a policy has been made the policy will be implemented. This assumption is not valid for regional innovation policies formulated in many countries. This assumption rests upon certain political and organization conditions. It is frequently said that regional innovation system in Korea is one of the successful cases because of properly established institution for the implementation of innovation policies. The components of institution for innovation are defined in this article. For the analysis of institution for regional innovation system in Korea, three aspects such as organization, policies & programs, and governance structure were taken into account. Institution for regional innovation system in Korea is analyzed with three aspects: (1) organization for policy implementation, (2) innovation policy, and (3) governance structure. Firstly, organizations for innovation in Korea are composed of three categories such as organizations for policy formulation, organizations for policy implementation and agencies for coordination. Secondly, there are two categories of policies for innovation: (1) policies for the enhancement of national competitiveness and policies for the regional innovation capacity building, and (2) policies for fostering manpower and policy for regulatory reform. Thirdly, innovation governance in Korea is composed of three layer structure: (1) top level governance which is composed of two committee, three ministries and two agencies, (2) local level governance such as one innovation related offices and one center for regulatory reform, and (3) one category of agency for coordination as a regional platform.

The aims of innovation and innovation strategy as the determinants of firm performance in the service sector (혁신목적과 혁신전략이 서비스 기업의 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Although the importance of the service sector has been highlighted recently, service innovation remain under-researched by scholars. Innovation research based on manufacturing sector suggests that innovation strategy varies according to the objectives of innovation and has a positive influence on firm performance. To investigate the path that links the objectives of innovation, innovation strategy used and firm performance, this study develops a conceptual model of service innovation from the literature and tests the Structural Equation Model(SEM) using STEPI (Korea's Science and Technology Policy Institute) data. We could identify the causal relationships both between the objectives of innovation and innovation strategy and between innovation strategy and firm performance in service as in manufacturing, but we also found that the results of the empirical study for the service industry, in particular, the empirical results on the relationship between the aims of innovation and innovation strategy used, are quite different from those for manufacturing.

  • The present paper deals with an analysis of relationship among technical human resources management as a precursor, technology innovation activity and achievements of technical innovation on the basis of preceding empirical studies on technology innovation activities of manufacturing corporations. The analysis shows that First, the technical human resources management is found to have influence upon technology innovation activity in various ways, implying that the role of technical human resources management as a key to technical innovation is most important of all to enable manufacturing companies to gain edge in competition by means of technology innovation activity; and Second, technology innovation activity exercises impacts on the achievements of exploitative technology innovation as well as on the achievements of exploratory technology innovation on the part of manufacturing industry. The above findings prove that the level of technology innovation activity may be a source for superior competitiveness of manufacturing business as a result of technology innovation performance. Manufacturing corporations, thus, need to place more weight on stepping up their executive level of technology innovation activity factors than on increasing simply the level of technical investment.

  • In industrialised countries, innovation is a key source of economic growth. Research is a key driver of technological innovation and involves the process of systematic investigation and/or experimentation to discover new knowledge. The Governments' industry innovation policy supports a business focus on Research and Development (R&D) through a range of programs in order to achieve these aims. The Innovation Statement, launched by the Australian Prime Minister in January 2001, commits an additional $3 billion over five years to encourage and support innovation. The Australian Government aims to build world competitive firms and strong research capability in industry to strengthen Australia's international competitiveness and increase national prosperity. It develops policies and programs to enhance investment in innovation. The Australian Government also undertakes analysis and comparisons of innovation policies, instruments and approaches to maintain a leading-edge National Innovation System. This includes analysis of the innovation activities of other nations, and evaluation of the impacts of innovation policies and programs on Australia's institutions and enterprises.   • This paper describes a comprehensive approach to examine how technological innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm's competences through its dynamic and reciprocal relationship with R&D and product commercialization. Three theories of technology and innovation (R&D and technological knowledge concept, product-process concept, technological interdependence concept) are used to relate technology and innovation to strategic management. Based on those theories, this paper attempts to identify dynamic relationship between product innovation and process innovation by system dynamics, by investigating the aspect of the dynamic changes of the closed feedback circulation structure in which R&D investments drive technological knowledge accumulation, and such knowledge accumulation actualizes product innovation and process innovation, subsequently resulting in the increase of productivity, customer satisfaction, profit generation, and re-investment on R&D from the created profits. This provides the ability to assess the advantages and disadvantages of different technological innovation strategies and commitments, and the opportunity to explore equilibrium point and suggest a generalized technological innovation model under different industry environment parameters and time-strategies.
