  • Two dimensional modeling was carried out to find the safety distance between the defrost heater and the plastic inner wall of domestic refrigerator Estimation was processed for the three cases; the estimation of plastic wall temperature (1) without any protection, (2) with an aluminum foil attached on a wall, and (3) with an aluminum shield installed between heater and wall. The former two cases are found to be dangerous during defrosting process, because the temperatures of inner wall reach above 80'C , which is the upper temperature limit of the wall material. The case with an aluminum shield is considered to be safe by maintaining the temperature of the wall in the range of 6$0^{\circ}C$ during defrosting process.

  • In this numerical study, it is investigated for the ice-formation phenomena for water flow in a concentric tube. The freezing layers of ice in both the inner and outer wall of a concentric tube are simultaneously considered. In the solution strategy, the complete set of governing equations in both the solid and liquid regions are resolved. Numerical results are obtained by varying the inner/outer wall temperatures and Reynolds number. The results show that the inner/outer wall temperatures have the great effect on the thickness of the solidification layer thereof. The shapes of ice layer in both the inner and outer wall can be expressed as a function of inverse Graetz number. As the wall temperature in inner or outer tube decreases, the heat transfer coefficients in both inner and outer ice layer surfaces increase absolutely.

  • A large-eddy simulation is performed for turbulent flow in a concentric annulus with the inner wall rotation at Re$\sub$Dh/=8900 for three rotation rates N=0.2145, 0.429 and 0.858. Main emphasis is placed on the inner wall rotation effect on near-wall turbulent structures. Near-wall turbulent structures close to the inner wall are scrutinized by computing the lower-order statistics. The anisotropy invariant map for the Reynolds stress tensor and the invariant function are illustrated to reveal the altered anisotropy in turbulent structure. Probability density functions of the splat/anti-splat process are explored to develop a sufficiently complete picture of the contributions of the flow events to turbulent production. The present numerical results show that the altered turbulent structures may be attributed to the centrifugal instability, which leads to the augmentation of sweep and ejection events.

  • In this study, temperature characteristics and fire damage form were analyzed to investigate flame spreading form and fire probability from ignition sources subject to drivit component materials which is finishing material in architecture. Ignition sources were limited to a gas torch and exterior panel board fire, and the size of the sample was manufacture in 30 cm length ${\times}$ 50 cm height ${\times}$ 5cm thickness size. Marble (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall), marble (inner wall) + 4 mm plaster stone (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit + insulation (outer wall), and gypsum board (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall) were prepared for the sample. As result of the research for temperature characteristics, large temperature difference by each material was shown in $218^{\circ}C{\sim}995^{\circ}C$ at 30 seconds and $501^{\circ}C{\sim}1078^{\circ}C$ at 300 seconds. Especially when the inner wall was a plaster board, lowest temperature of $501^{\circ}C$ was shown at 300 seconds and marble inner wall showed the following lowest temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. Temperature rising over $1000^{\circ}C$ was shown in other materials. Regarding fire damage form, drivit or gypsum board outer wall parts exposed to fire showed combustion and carbonization to show calcination(breaking phenomenon) and influence of heat exposure was higher as calcination became more severe.

  • This study was considered to occur the local wall thinning at elbow which is flowing the steam and high-pressure water of high-temperature. The angle of elbow is ${\Theta}=45^{\circ}$ and $67.545^{\circ}$. The damage behaviors of inner or outer wall thinning elbow under internal pressure were calculated by FEA(finite element analysis). We compared the simulated results by FEA with experimental data. The FEA results are as follows: In the FEA results of three types of wall thinning ratio, the circumferential and longitudinal stresses show the similar values regardless of the angle of elbow, respectively. The circumferential strain was greater at elbow of small angle, but the longitudinal strain was nearly same. The FEM stress of outer wall thinning elbow was slightly higher than that of the inner wall thinning elbow, and strain was also slightly higher. In the experiments, the circumferential strain was increased with the increase in the internal pressure, and increased rapidly on about 0.2% of strain. The longitudinal strain was small. The strain at break was much smaller than 0.2%. In the relation between pressure and eroded ratio, the criteria that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained. The results of FEA were in relatively good agreement with those of the experiment.

  • This study on the effects of local wall-thinned location on the fracture behavior of pipes was carried out, and the results were compared with the analytical results. Local wall-thinning for the bending test was machined with various sizes on the outside of pipes, in order to simulate the metal loss, due to erosion/corrosion. In addition, we had carried out FE analysis for the pipes with local wall thinning on the inside, and its results were comparatively studied with that of the outside. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors of inner or outer wall thinning. Fracture types, obtained from the experiments and analyses, could be classified into ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation, depending on the thinned length and thinned ratio. Based on the results, the fracture behaviors of pipes with the outer wall thinning can be applied to estimate the fracture behaviors of pipes with the inner wall thinning.

  • The fully developed tubulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square- ribbed roughness elements on both the inner and outer wall surfaces in the concentric annuli are studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. Heat transfer coefficients for two conditions, i.e, a) inner wall heated as constant heat flux and outer wall insulated b) inner wall insulated and outer wall heated as constant heat flux, are investigated. The analytical results of the fluid flow are verified by experiment. The experiment is done with a pitot tube and a X-type hot wire anemometer to measure the time mean velocity profiles, zero shear stress positions, maximum velocity profiles and friction factors, and etc. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, Nusselt number and Prandtl number.

  • The CLSM and the image analysis technique enhanced observation of fiber wall fibrillation occurred in both the outer and the fiber wall surfaces during refining by non-destructive techniques. In the early stages of refining, it was well observed that a partial separation between the S1 and S2 layer in the secondary wall was made generating a space in the wet fiber walls . With further refining, it was clearly shown that the shear forces imparted by the refiner bar surfaces caused the S1 layer to become totally separated from the S2 layer as well as creating microfibrils. Furthermore, the fibrillation in the inner fiber wall surfaces could be due to the normal force (Fn) by refiner bars, friction force between a fiber and refiner bars (Fs) and inner friction force between fiber walls(fs). It was confirmed that the concept of fibrillation should be extended to fibrillation in the inner fiber wall surfaces as well as internal and external fribrillation.

  • This paper is a study of the possibility of experience and expression in the architecture of Louis I. Kahn by focusing on the characters of entrance, court and window/wall of his public buildings. In the course of composition, Kahn defined the entrance, court and window/wall as an connecting elements and elements of boundary. The characters revealed by these elements or rooms give the clue to insight Kahn's thought of relation of interior and exterior space or inner and outer space. Following are the characters of these elements. First, a entrance reveals the fact that inner space separates from outer space by connecting these two space and giving the value to inner space as the entity and totality like outer space. The entrance gives its ontological being to human subjects not by vision but experience and expression which is the essence of commonness, that is, Silence. Kahn made the possibility of activity amplify in this common and silent space. Second, this entrance is connected with wide and huge central space not individual spaces of interior space. This extreme procedure of entering makes human subject feel sublime of intoner space. And the central spaces becomes another exterior or another world in the inner world of architecture by the lights from above and by having the boundary wall which shows same pattern of exterior wall. Third, Kahn regarded a window as the giver of lights not as the medium of vision connecting inner space with outer. He tried to connect interior with exterior through the being and character of the light expressed in the interior. And in his buildings, interior space is connected with exterior by expressing the purpose of building, composition of inner space, structural truth and construction facts through the Form, a pattern of wall, details and ornamental joints. By practicing this thoughts in the real buildings, Kahn tried to gave aura to both the interior space and entity of architecture which is regarded as micro universe like flowers, rocks and human beings.

  • A cyclone design concept named Convex cyclone was developed to reduce pressure losses. Contrary to conventional cylinder-on-con type cyclone, inner wall of Convex cyclone are defined with a continuous curve and it has convex shape body. The discontinuity of inner diameter variation rate of cylinder-on-con type cyclone cause additional pressure loss. Continuous wall of Convex cyclone prevent additional pressure loss. In order to verify Convex cyclone design concept, we make a comparative experiments between Stairmand HE and Convex cyclone. Experimental Convex cyclone designed based on Stairmand HE model, and inner wall are defined with circular arch. The experimental result clearly shows that Convex cyclone can achieve maximum 50% pressure loss reduction with a few percent of collection efficiency drop. In addition, the experimental results indicated the existence of optimum convexity, minimum pressure loss, of cyclone wall.
