  • This paper describes a new, effective method developed at the National Research Council Canada for rolling element bearing incipient failure detection. This method can detect not only outer race damage, previously published, but also inner race damage with a 100% detection rate based on a sample size of 32. The prediction of the exact angular location of the damage spot along the raceway is illustrated and experimental confirmation is presented. For the first time, a statically measurable parameter for inner and outer race damage is introduced as a means of verifying other techniques which do not offer absolute proof, but resort only to "overwhelming evidence". A brief comparison with other methods such as Shock Pulse Method, Kurtosis Analysis and High Frequency Resonance Technique is presented. A computerized automatic monitoring system utilizing the new method is described and experimental results are presented.presented.

  • We propose a finite element modeling method considering the ball bearing contact mechanism, and the developed method was verified through experimental and analytical results of inner and outer race-type rotor systems. A comparison of the proposed method with conventional method reveals that there is little difference in the results of the inner race-type rotor system, but there are considerable differences in the results of the outer race-type rotor system such that predictions of greater accuracy can be made. Therefore, the proposed method can be used for accurately predicting the dynamic characteristics of an outer race-type rotary machine.

  • Kullback Discrimination Information (KDI) is one of the pattern recognition methods. KDI defined as a measure of the mutual dissimilarity computed between two time series was studied for detection and classification of bearing flaking on outer-race and inner-races. To model the damages, the bearings in normal condition, outer-race flaking condition and inner-races flaking condition were provided. The vibration sensor was attached by the bearing housing. This produced the total 25 pieces of data each condition, and we chose the standard data and measure of distance between standard and tested data. It is difficult to detect the flaking because similar pulses come out when balls pass the defection point. The detection and classification method for inner and outer races are defected by KDI and nearest neighbor classification rule is proposed and its high performance is also shown.

  • The effective case depth for case-hardened rolling bearing has been discussed. For this purpose, rolling contact fatigue tests for ball bearings built with inner race of various hardness values were conducted until L10 calculating rating life using a bearing life test machine under radial loading. Then, the distribution of residual stress below the inner raceway, which depended on the hardness value, was measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result, the linear relationship was established between the hardness value of the inner race and the theoretical shear stress evaluated at the depth where the residual stress disappeared below the inner raceway. Based on the relationship, it could be found that the factor of safety in bearing manufacturer’s rules for the effective case depth of case hardened rolling bearings was set higher. However, it could be also found that the hardness values at the depth where the maximum shearing stress acted below the raceway surface in a tapered roller bearing hardened by the carburizing process, were not sufficient for preventing plastic deformation under the basic dynamic load rating. Consequently, further efforts were still required to reduce or to disperse the contact load on the material design of a rolling bearing in order to prolong its life.

  • In this study, a rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to simulating a ring rolling process of the inner race cage of a constant velocity joint for the passengers' cars. The ring rolling process is mathematically modeled by several assumptions. The defect formation at the side ends is predicted in detail. The predictions are compared with the experiments and a good agreement is observed in terms of deformed shape.

  • In view of the effects of the hardness of material on fatigue, rolling contact fatigue process in hard metals seems to differ from it in soft metals. This paper has been aimed to compare the rolling contact fatigue process according to the hardness of materials. Rolling contact fatigue tests using the ball bearings assembled with the inner race of four different hardness have been carried out. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth on/below the inner raceway during individual rolling contact fatigue have been measured by X-ray diffraction. The results of this study showed that the change of residual stress and half-value breadth during the rolling contact fatigue on race way in hard metals is the same as in soft metals. However, plastic deformation by rolling contact in hard metals is in microscopic scale but only for soft metals in macroscopic scale.

  • This paper describes how to identify standard numbers and to diagnose defects of the ball bearings. The first stage of the networks is a procedures for identifying standard numbers of the bearings, and the next stage carries out the diagnosis of defects on the outer race and the inner race of bearings. The identification and the diagnosis of bearings were carried out by simulations and experiments.

  • Inner diameter of bearing race is automatically measured by complete inspection system after grinding process. Contact type three points supporting method is widely applied to automatic inner diameter measurement because of its excellent stability. However, the geometric consideration regarding three points supporting method is not sufficient. In this study, the error equation from geometric error analysis of three points supporting method is found. The effect of factors in the error equation is also investigated. The error equation is linear for difference of diameter in sample and master on range of tolerance. An error becomes more and more larger, when the distance of two supporting balls or the diameter of supporting ball are increased. In the result, some considerations are proposed for measurement of inner diameter by the three points supporting method.

  • The outer race of a constant velocity (CV) joint having six inner ball grooves has traditionally been manufactured by multi-stage warm forging, which includes forward extrusion, upsetting, backward extrusions, necking, ironing and sizing, and machining. In the current study, a multi-stage cold forging process is examined and an assessment for replacing and modifying the conventional multi-stage warm forging is made. The proposed procedure is simplified to the backward extrusion of the conventional process, and the sizing and necking are combined into a single sizing-necking step. Thus, the forging surface of the six ball grooves can be obtained without additional machining. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation on each operation was performed. The forging loads were also predicted. In addition, a structural integrity evaluation for the tools was carried out. Based on the results, it is shown that the dimensional requirements of the outer race can be well met.
