  • This paper presents the low cycle thermal fatigue of the engine exhaust manifold subject to thermo-mechanical cyclic loading. As a failure of the exhaust manifold is mainly caused by geometric constraints of the less expanded inlet flange and cylinder head, the analysis is based on the exhaust system model with three-dimensional temperature distribution and temperature dependent material properties. The result show that large compressive plastic deformations are generated at an elevated temperature of the exhaust manifold and tensile stresses are remained in several critical zones at a cold condition. From the repetition of these thermal shock cycles, maximum plastic strain range (0.454%) could be estimated by the stabilized stress-strain hysteresis loops. It is used to predict the low cycle thermal fatigue life of the exhaust manifold for the thermal shock test.

  • Micro hydraulic turbines take a growing interest because of its small and simple structure as well as high possibility of applying to micro and small hydropower resources. The differential pressure exiting within the city water pipelines can be used efficiently to generate electricity like the energy generated through gravitational potential energy in dams. In order to reduce water pressure at the inlet of water cleaning centers, pressure reducing valves are used widely. Therefore, pressure energy is wasted. Instead of using the pressure reduction valve, a micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine can be replaced to get energy caused by the large differential pressure found in the city water pipelines. In this study, in order to acquire design data of counter-rotating tubular type micro-turbine, output power, head, and efficiency characteristics due to the diffuser.

  • Experimental and computational studies on an turbopump inducer with and without a bearing strut were performed to evaluate the effects of a strut on the performance of an inducer. Global performance data such as head rise and efficiency, and detailed flow characteristics such as surface static pressures were measured and compared with computational results. Generally a good agreement is observed between experimental and computational results, but some discrepancies are observed due to complex flow features such as backflows at the inlet and strut/inducer interactions. For the flow rates where the backflow region is large, installing a strut enhanced the hydraulic performance of the inducer by diminishing the size of the backflows. The results also show that the strut has negligible effect on the suction performance of the inducer.

  • In the present work, flow analysis has been performed for side channel type double stage ring blower by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Shear stress transport model is used as turbulent closure. The commercial CFD code CFX 11.0 is used for the calculations. Each of two stage is calculated separately and the second stage inlet flow is same as the first stage outlet flow so that consecutive calculation is possible. Velocity and pressure fields have been analyzed at the midplane between blades. The numerical results are validated with experimental data for head coefficients at different flow coefficients.

  • For the case of high head and critical low flow rate range of micro hydropower resources, it requires very low specific speed turbines which are lower than conventional impulse turbine's specific speed. In order to satisfy the request for very low specific speed turbine with high efficiency, a new positive displacement turbine is developed. The performance characteristics of the new turbine is tested and compared with a conventional impulse turbine, which is used for automatic water faucet system. The purpose of present study is to develop an high performance turbine that can be used to extract micro hydropower potential of a water supply system. The test results show that the positive displacement turbine is much more efficient than the conventional turbine and it can sustain high efficiency under the wide range of operating conditions. The pressure pulsations at the inlet and outlet of the positive displacement turbine can be considerably minimized by using simple pressure damper.

  • Thermal desorption/gas chromatography/mass selective detection method using Tenax cartridges for the determination of gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH) is described. Glass fiber filter can collect only PAH in particulate. Gaseous PAH may penetrate the filter. Glass cartridge packed Tenax-GC was uses fur adsorption of gaseous PAH. The air of inhalation zone was collected fur 2-10 hours. Cartridges were thermally desorbed in the reverse direction to sample flow. The desorption conditions were as follows; desorption temperature; $300^{\circ}C$; desorption time; 20min; column head pressure; 30psi; inlet split vent; closed during desorption.

  • Experiments were performed to see the effect of radial tip clearance on a turbopump inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7. Hydraulic and cavitation tests were done for three cases of tip clearance ratio, that is, 0.026, 0.053, and 0.079. With increase in the tip clearance, inducer head and pressure on the inducer tip decreased. Attached cavitation and cavitation surge were found in the cavitation tests. In the attached cavitation one cell rotated at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer. Cavitation performance deteriorated with increase in the tip clearance. The level of casing vibration increased in the cavitation condition and the level was very high when the attached cavitation appeared.
