Objectives: This study was performed to review clinical research trends in the treatment of primary headache disorders with pharmacopuncture. Methods: We searched clinical studies on primary headache disorders treated with pharmacopuncture in four electronic databases including OASIS, RISS, CNKI, and Pubmed. The selected studies were analyzed with regard to study design, subject, intervention, evaluation, and result. Results: Five randomized controlled trials, one non-randomized controlled trial, one before-and-after study, and six case series were selected. Most of the studies showed that pharmacopuncture treatment was significantly effective in treating primary headache disorders; however, the quality of the randomized controlled trials was low. Conclusions: According to this study, pharmacopuncture could be a useful treatment option for primary headache disorders. Based on these results, further studies on the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture for primary headache disorders should be performed in the near future.
Objective : To investigate effects of herbal preparations formulated(Gihyeolgwanjeolbang-A, CWS-A) on complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis in rats. Method : Arthritis was induced by injecting CFA subcutaneously into the left knee joint and paw, and the herbal preparations formulated(CWS-A I, 82.3 mg/kg ; CWS-A II, 164.6 mg/kg) was administered orally (i.g.) for 10 consecutive days beginning on day 10 after the injection. External shape, paw edema, inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), and histological observation were assessed. Result : In swelling of the paw, CWS-A I and CWS-A II group in 15 days and 20 days were significantly reduced compared to controls. In serum ALT, CWS-A I and CWS-A II group were significantly reduced compared to controls. In TNF-${\alpha}$, CWS-A I and CWS-A II group were a tendency reduced compared to controls. In HGB, HCT, MCHC of erythrocytes, CWS-A II group was increased compared to controls. In histological observations, CWS-A II group was observed synoviocytes more than control group and was observed proteoglycans in the deep layers. Conclusion : The data suggest that CWS-A significant anti-arthritic effects that may be mediated by suppressing inflammatory parameters.
Drug eruption is a cutaneous reaction caused by various drugs. It is a very common drug induced adverse reaction. Contrast media induced drug eruption is rare. But approximately 10% of people injected with contrast media experience adverse reaction, and drug eruption accounts for more than 40% of all adverse reactions. We report a case of mild drug eruption and its treatment process based on korean traditional medicine. The patient is a 50 years old female diagnosed with functional dyspepsia. The patient had gastric discomfort and alternation between diarrhea and constipation. All symptoms showed nearly complete remission with continued korean traditional medical treatment. The patient had been injected with contrast media for Computed tomography(CT) evaluation of her breast cancer history. Rashes appeared on back and abdomen, and urticaria and pruritus appeared on the patient's finger 1 day after injection. We prescribed Goreisan(TSUMURA CO &, TJ-17) and acupuncture on Quchi(LI11), Zusanli(ST36), Yangxi(LI5), Yanggu(SI5). Consequently, the drug eruption showed remarkable improvement. So the author reports korean traditional medicine is effective complementary treatment for drug eruption.
In oriental medicine, manual-acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA) have been widely utilized to cure several inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. We designed this experiment to find neurochemical mechanism related to electroacupuncture induced anti-inflammatory effect on mouse air pouch model. EA with both low frequency (1 Hz) and high frequency (120 Hz) was treated after induction of inflammation in air pouch using injection of zymosan. To verify the role of opioid system in electroacupuncture-induced anti-inflammatory effect, naloxone (10 mg/kg) was pretreated. In addition, idazoxan (5 mg/kg) was pre-treated to evaluate the possible effect of endogenous adrenergic system in autonomic system on EA induced anti-inflammatory effect. As results of this study, naloxone pretreatment did not change the anti-inflammatory effect evoked by high frequency EA, while low frequency EA(1 Hz) induced anti-inflammatory effect was dramatically suppressed by naloxone pretreatment. These data indicated that endogenous opioid system might be extensively involve in anti-inflammatory effect evoked by not high frequency, but low frequency EA. However, idazoxan pretreatment did not produce any modulatory effect on both low and high frequency EA induced anti-inflammatory effect, suggesting that EA induced anti-inflammatory effect was not mediated by endogenous adrenergic system. In conclusion, these data strongly suggested that EA induced anti-inflammatory effect is mediated by endogenous opioid system, not endogenous adrenergic system.
Eui Bang Shin Gam("醫方新鑑") is a classic on oriental medicines written by Shin Oh (新塢) Han Byung Lyun (韓秉璉) in 1913. It was written under the base of the writer's own experience as well as in the light of 36 other classics on oriental medicines such as Dong Eui Bo Gam ("東醫寶監"), Eui Hak Yip Mun ("醫學入門"), and Kyung Ak Jeon Seo ("景岳全書"). In an attempt to avoid difficult theories and list only the essential informations and formulas for clinical purposes, it attained its own characteristics of not only reorganizing Dong Eui Bo Gam in a pragmatic way but also explaining diseases classified in western medicines in oriental medicines' point of view as well as suggesting medicine formulas regarding such explanations. As a result, it is a complete and efficient medical classic through which one can gain knowledge in both classic oriental medicines and combination of western and oriental medicines. Its special features are making a separate chapter for cholera and Lao Zhai (勞瘵), which is also a contagious disease, and trying in the chapter to explain the diseases in words of oriental medicines; listing details of nine major epidemic and matching them with the diseases known in oriental medicines; and recording a case of enforcing sterilization and preventive injection against contagious diseases. The basic medical theory in Eui Bang Shin Gam are the yin-yang theory, the thesis of fire and water, the thesis of the exterior and the interior, Yun Qi Lun (運氣論), and four institutions of human body. In explaining the basic theories, the writer emphasized strengthening the yang of the body, under the influence of the thoughts of Zhang Ga Bin (張介賓). Since he put the importance of diagnosis first, the first chapter is about diagnosis. There are five different ways of diagnosing a patient mentioned in the book, and acupuncture, pulse, and medicines was considered crucial.

Objectives : The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of low level laser treatment (LLLT) on the gait behavior in the rat model of arthritis. Methods : Knee arthritis was induced by the injection of $125{\mu}l$ of Complete Freund's Adjuvant(CFA) into the right hind knee joint cavity. Arthritic rats were divided 3 groups; arthritis group was used for control(CON), 10 min of laser treated group(LSR10), and 30 min of laser treated group(LSR30). LLLT was applied to KI 1 for 11 times under gaseous anesthesia. We performed several analyses under catwalk test including stand and swing time, duty cycle of paw steps, intensity and print area of steps, and stride length. Results : Stand and duty cycle of paw steps were increased significantly at 12 days after arthritis induction in LSR30 group. Swing time was decreased significantly at 12 days after arthritis induction in LSR10 group. In the analysis of intensity, print area and stride length, however, results did not show statistical significance during the time point of experiments. Conclusions : The data suggest that LLLT on the rat model of CFA induced arthritis showed beneficial effects by increase of stand time and duty cycle of paw steps and decrease of swing time. Therefore, LLLT could be useful option to improve gait discomfort in arthritis patients.

Objectives : This study is performed to investigate the therapy on tinnitus through the literature of Eastern and Western medicine. Methods : This study review the definition, etiology, classification, internal and external methods of treatment of tinnitus based on 50 articles of Eastern medicine, 16 articles of Western medicine about the treatment of tinnitus. Results : The results were as follows. 1. In Eastern medicine, the cause and mechanism of disease of tinnitus arose from the state of qi-blood deficiency, internal dampness-heat and depression stagnation. In Western medicine, there are mainly caused by damage to the auditory system the lower induced changes in the upper. 2. In Eastern medicine, differentiation of syndromes classifies clinical aspects, and cause and mechanism of disease. In Western medicine, it divides into an generating region, clinical and associated symptoms aspects. 3. In Eastern medicine, internal method of treatments of tinnitus are divided into four treatments. In Western medicine, internal methods of tinnitus are vasodilators, blood-flow improvers, Metabolism improvers etc. 4. In Eastern medicine, external method of treatments of tinnitus are paste preparation method, powder preparation method, pill preparation method, acupuncture & moxibustion method. In Western medicine, external method of treatments of Tinnitus are divided into injection, other surgical therapies and adjuvant therapy. Conclusions : Until now, there is no perfect, effective single treatment. We think that Eastern medicine approach and treatment can be helpful to overcome the limitations of tinnitus cure.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics of anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock caused by bee venom. Methods: We retrospectively collected the data of the patients who experienced anaphylaxis caused by natural bee sting or acupuncture using bee venom from January 1999 to December 2008. Seventy subjects were divided into the shock and non-shock groups. The clinical characteristics, sources of bee venom, treatments and outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age of the subjects was $45.5{\pm}16.3$ years old and the number of males was 44 (62.9%). There were 25 patients in the shock group and 45 in the non-shock group. The age was older (p=0.001) and females (p=0.003) were more frequent in the shock group. Transportation to the hospital via ambulance was more frequent in the shock group (p<0.001). No difference was found in species of bee between the two groups. The cephalic area, including the face, was the most common area of bee venom in both groups. Anaphylaxis caused by bee sting commonly occurred between July and October. Cutaneous and respiratory symptoms were the most frequent symptoms related to anaphylaxis. Cardiovascular and neurologic symptoms were more frequent in the shock group. The amount of intravenously administered fluid and subcutaneous injection of epinephrine were much more in the shock group than that in the non-shock group. Conclusion: Older age was the factors related to anaphylactic shock caused by bee venom. Further validation is needed to evaluate the gender factor associated with shock.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on Eastern-Western integrative medicine in Korea. Methods We searched the studies on Eastern-Western integrative medicine in 5 Korean web database (NDSL, KoreanTK, KISS, OASIS, DBPIA). 66 research papers we founded. Results 13 papers were published at 2010. The studies on Eastern-Western integrative medicine were mainly published in the Journal of Society of Preventive Korean Medicine. 24 papers were case report, include 7 studies on neurology, 4 studies on each oncology and dermatology, 2 studies on each gastroenterology and ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, 1 study on each obstetrics and gynecology and endocrinology and nephrology. In 24 case reports, 7 kinds of Eastern medicine treatment method and 4 kinds of Western medicine treatment method were existed. In case reports, medication (100%), herbal medicine, acupuncture (95.8%), moxibustion (58.3%), cupping, infusion solution (25%), pharmacopuncture (20.8%), physical therapy (12.5%), laser, injection, rehabilitation (8.3%) were used. Conclusions In this study, we analyzed the trends of Eastern-Western integrative medicine in korea from 2010 to 2017. There were various studies about Eastern-Western integrative medicine. In case reports, Eastern-Western integrative medicine tend to concentrated on treatment not diagnosis. Not only treatment but also diagnosis is needed in Eastern-Western integrative medicine studies.
