  • The degradation of aqueous oxytetracycline (OTC) from an aqueous solution antibiotic using H2O2/Fe2+ process was studied in one 1 L batch chemical reactor. The extent of OTC degradation (20 mg/L) was investigated from a known initial pH solution, temperature and the type of catalyst (Fe2+, Fe3+) and for various initial concentrations of OTC, H2O2 and Fe2+. The degradation efficiency achieved was found to be very important (90.82% and 90.63%) at initial pH solution of 3 and 4, respectively. However, the type of catalyst and the reaction temperature had a slight impact on the final degradation of OTC. The results showed that the OTC removal increased with increasing initial H2O2 concentration in the range of 70 to 150 mg/L and initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range of 2 to 5 mg/L. The highest degradation efficiency obtained at ambient temperature was 90.95% with initial concentration of OTC of 10 mg/L, H2O2 = 150 mg/L and Fe2+ = 5 mg/L. Moreover, biodegradability improved from 0.04 to 0.36 and chemical oxygen demand degradation was 78.35% after 60 min of treatment. This study proved that Fenton process can be used for pretreatment of wastewater contaminated by OTC before a biological treatment.

  • The sensitivity analysis is a method to quantify to what extent the output of a model changes with the values of input parameters. This will lead to increase model accuracy through measurement validation. Three line source air quality models, HIWAY 2, PAL, and CALINE 3 were selected for this study. The input parameters analysed included wind speed, wind direction, stability, emission rate, mixing height, receptor distance, initial dispersion coefficient, surface roughness, and averaging time. It turned out that PAL model generally showed higher concentration than other two models, and that between CALINE 3 and HIWAY 2, CALINE 3 showed higher concentration than HIWAY 2 model near the line sources, but beyond a certain downwind distances HIWAY 2 model showed higher concentration. The modesl were very sensitive to wind speed especially in the range of 0 $\sim$ 1 m/s and to wind direction near the parallel wind to streets. In case of emission rate, the output concentration was directly proportional to these input parameters. And the sensitivity of the input parameters such as stability, mixing height, initial dispersion coefficient, surface roughness, and averaging time were not very significant.

  • In this work, the effect of the initial concentration of methanol and ethanol, and the addition of oxygen molecules were discussed to improve the hydrogen generation using non-thermal plasma reactor effectively. In addition, the effect of ozone decomposition catalyst of manganese dioxide and its quantity was investigated. First, hydrogen concentration increased until an initial concentration of about 40,000[ppm] of methanol and thereafter it was saturated. Henceforth, hydrogen concentration decreased with increasing the oxygen percent on the carrier gas of nitrogen about both substances. Related with the effect of catalyst, it increased upto 60[g], but it was not changed largely after that. Consequently, it is confirmed that the hybrid process using plasma process and catalytic surface chemical reaction is a very promising way to increase the efficiency of hydrogen generation as investigated in this work.

  • It is well known that the adsorption character of activated carbon is dependent on the specific surface area and pore volume, but the relationship between the surface-chemical structure and the adsorption character has not been studied very often. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the acidic surface functional groups of activated carbon and the adsorption characteristics of low concentration phenol. So three types of activated carbons and four different treatments were introduced to this isotherm experiment. These treatments were nontreatment, 1N $HNO_3$ treatment, 6N $HNO_3$ treatment, $H_2O_2$ treatment. The conclusions of this study are as followings. If the initial concentration of phenol is high as 5mg/l, the adsorption is dependent on the specific surface area. If the initial concentration of phenol is low as $100{\mu}g/l$, the adsorption is dependent on the average pore volume. The acidic surface functional groups prevent the adsorption of phenol molecules to activated carbon. And the adsorbed amount decreases more for $HNO_3$ treatment than for $H_2O_2$ treatment and more for concentrated $HNO_3$ treatment than for dilute $HNO_3$ treatment.

  • Dry weight loss and nutrient release from leaf litter for six tree species were studied using litter bag methods. The litter bags were incubated for f6 months on the forest floor in temperate deciduous forest in Mt. Cheonma, located at the middle part of Korean Peninsula. The changes in nutrient content and the rate of dry weight loss in leaf litter varied with litter types. The litter of Pinus densiflora showed the lowest rate of mass loss (k=0.33), nitrogen concentration (0.89%) and ash concentration (2.50%), while showed the highest C/N ratio (63.40). On the other hand, the litter of Acer pseudo-sieboldianum showed the fastest rate of mass loss (k=0.82), the highest nitrogen concentration (1.11%), and the lowest C/N ratio (49.40). During the decomposition, nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium in the leaf litters showed relatively slow decreasing pattern compared to other elements (carbon, potassium, magnesium, manganese and sodium), but potassium and sodium decreased at early stage of the decomposition for all leaf litters. Differences in annual decomposition rates of litter among species were consistent with the particular chemical characteristics of their leaf litters. The initial concentration of nitrogen was positively correlated with litter decomposition rate for six species, while litter decomposition rate of six species was negatively correlated with C:N ratio of initial leaf litters.

  • We have proposed a characteristic method to estimate real composition when multi component oxide films are deposited by ALD. Final atomic concentration ratio was theoretically calculated from the film densities and growth rates for $HfO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ using ALD processed HfxAhOz mms.W e have transformed initial source feeding ratio during deposition to fins] atomic ratio in $Hf_xAl_yO_z$ films through thickness factors ($R_{HFO_2}$ ami $R_{Al_2O_3}$) ami concentration factor(C) defined in our experiments. Initial source feeding ratio could be transformed into the thickness ratio by each thickness factor. Final atomic ratio was calculated from thickness ratio by concentration factor. It has been successfully confirmed that the predicted atomic ratio was in good agreement with the actual measured value by ICP-MS analysis.

  • A result of estimating the effects of initial phosphorus concentration and nitrogen sources on removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater treatment using Scenedesmus dimorphus shows that there was no difference in microalgae growth amount and nitrogen removal amount by phosphorus concentration(5 ~ 60 mg/L). On the other hand, as initial phosphorus concentration increased, phosphorus removal amount was increased by luxury uptake of microalgae. Scenedesmus dimorphus preferred to ammonia when ammonia(40 mg/L) and nitrate(40 mg/L) are simultaneously presented and nitrogen removal rate of ammonia was high at approximately 20 mg/L/day.

  • The separation of $TiO_2$ wastewater carried out by an electrocoagulation/flotation process, which had various operating parameters. The effect of electrode material (aluminum and four dimensionally stable electrode), applied current (0.07~0.5 A), electrolyte concentration (0~1 g/L), solution pH (3~11), initial turbidity (1000~20000 NTU) and suspended solid concentration (5000~25000 mg/L) were evaluated. Turbidity removal efficiency of the soluble anode (aluminum), which could produce metal ions, was higher than that of the dimensionally stable electrode. Considering operation time, turbidity removal and electric power, optimum current was 0.19 A. The more NaCl dosage was high, the less electric power was required. However, optimum NaCl concentration was 0.125 g/L considered removal efficiency, operation time and cost. Initial $TiO_2$ concentration did not affected turbidity removal on the electrocoagulation/flotation operation. The electrocoagulation/flotation process was proved to be a very effective separation method in the removal of $TiO_2$ from wastewater.

  • This study is focused on effects of factors that affect the formation of THMs during chlorination in drinking water treatment. During the chlorination, chlorine consumption is increased by increasing the initial chlorine dose, the pH and the total dissolved solid (TDS) concentration. Also THMs formation is increased up to $58.82{\mu}g/L$ and $55.54{\mu}g/L$ by increasing initial chlorine concentration and increasing pH. However, concentration of chloroform is decreased by increasing TDS concentration. This is caused the cation($Na^+$) of the total dissolved solids preferentially reacts with the functional groups of the organic material which influence the trihalomethane formation. But total trihalomethane formation is increased up to $127.46{\mu}g/L$ by $Br^-$ contained in the total dissolved solids. DOC reduction was not influenced by any of the factors.

  • Phosphate, ammonia, glucosamine, glucose, pyruvate, succinate, fumarate, malate and acetate were examined for their ability to control the heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) production in succinate salts medium or in M9 medium. The results obtained were summerized as follows. 1. When the initial phosphate concentration was adjusted to 1.0mM, ST production was decreased to 80u/ml or less. But when the initial phosphate concentration was adjusted to 64mM or 100mM, enterotoxin production was 320u/ml. 2. When the initial ammonia concentration in the medium was adjusted to 1.0mM, no ST production and cell growth were observed. But when ammonia concentration was adjusted to 10mM, 19mM, 38mM or 76mM, enterotoxin production was 320u/ml. 3. Among carbon sources, glucosamine, glucose, pyruvate, succinate, fumarate, malate and acetate, acetate supported the highest specific production (928 unit/O.D.) of heat-stable enterotoxin. From this results, we could assume that heat-stable enterotoxin production is controlled by stringent control mechanism. 4. When the pH of the succinate salts medium was kept between 6.2 to 6.5, no heat-stable enterotoxin production was observed, but when the pH of the medium was kept between pH 6.2 to 6.5, 267 unit/O.D. of heat-stable enterotoxin was produced. 5. Glucose inhibited the heat-stable enterotoxin production and the mechanism was assumed due to its capacity to lower the pH of the medium during catabolysis and its high metabolic energy.
