The objective of the present study is to assess the contribution of bulk flow to the regulatory mechanism of amniotic fluid volume and its ionic concentration in the membranes surrounding the amniotic fluid. For quantitative assessment, we prepared 4 kinds of artificial amniotic fIuids (isotonic isovolumetric, hypotonic isovolumetric, isotonic hypervolumetric and hypotonic hypervolumetric ones) by replacing 70% of amniotic fluid of pregnant rabbits with water or normal Tyrode solutions. Isoosmotic saline of 0.5 ml volume containing 0.05% Censored and 15 mM/l LiCl was administered initially into amniotic sacs of all subject animals. Samples of amniotic fluid were collected in after 30 and 90 minute intervals; the concentrations of Censored, $Na^+\;and\;Li^+$ were determined and compared. Followings are the results obtained. 1. from isovolumetric and increased Congcord group, we couldn't find significant change in $Li^+\;and\;Na^+$ concentration in isotonic amniotic fluid. However, $Na^+$ concentration increased significantly as well as a striking increase in Censored concentration in hypotonic amniotic fluid. 2. In isovoIumetric and decreased Censored group, the rate of $[Li^+]$ decrement and the rate of $[Na^+]$ increment were much higher in hypotonic amniotic fluid than in isotonic. 3. In hypervolumetric and increased Censored group, the rate of $Na^+$ efflux increased proportionately with the increment of Censored concentration up to 0.98, which was higher than the rate of $Li^+$ efflux in isotonic amniotic fluid. However, the increment of $Na^+$ concentration was rather related with the initial $Na^+$ concentration in hypotonic amniotic fluid, showing inverse relationship. $Li^+$ concentration increased only when there was a marked increase in Censored concentration and approached near a maximum value or 1. 4. For hypervolumetric and decreased Censored group, the observations were identical to isovolumetric and decreased Censored group. From these results the following conclusions could be made: 1) There is no net movement of water or monovalent cations across the membranes surrounding amniotic fIuid in isotonic isovolumetric condition. In contrast, there is a net efflux of amniotic fluid by osmotic bulk flow, resulting in elevation of $Na^+$ concentration in hypotonic isovolumetric condition. 2) In hypervolumetric conditions, there is a massive efflux of amniotic fluid or solvent drag through the surrounding membranes by fiItrative bulk flow, where the rate of $Na^+$ efflux has a linear relationship with that of water efflux. This is assumed to be carried out through enlarged and newly opened intercellular spaces resulting from increased intraamniotic pressure. 3) Once increasing intraamniotic pressure reaches a point allowing $Li^+$ to pass through during osmotic bulk flow in hypotonic amniotic fIuid, $Na^+$ influx seems to occur by diffusion simultaneously or immediately thereafter, too.
It has been well known that the alkali-aggregate reaction between the aggregates and cement paste is one of the reasons of a concrete siructre expansion. Because of a serious demage on the concrete stnicture from the expansion, in many countries, the safety of the materials is checked in laboratory by mortar-bar test and the upper limit of expansion in length is 0.1%. The prescriptions are presented in the ASTM C227 and 490 of U.S. which has been international currency and in the KS Handbook F2503, F2546 and L5107 of Korea published by Korean Standards Association. Both of the prescriptions are almost same in their contents. Actually, in the process of preparing and measuring the mortar-bar according to the prescription mentioned above, it seems that there are no problems for its own purpose but a few points are found to be improved upon the methods to increase the accuracy for laboratory work as follows. 1. The prescription of blending ratio(aggregate, cement and water) should be noted by volume not by weight. 2. It is unreasonable to measure the initial length of mortar bars after 24$\pm$2 hours at once regardless the kind of aggregates. 3. It may bring about errors in calculating the expansion ratio under the condition of the denominator value fixed as 254mm. 4. The measuring methods of specific gravity are selected according to the purposes but the pure specific gravity displays the highest accuracy among them.
To examine the availability of onggi (earthenware) as a floral vase, we compared the vase life of cut gerberas (Gerbera jamesonii) with generally used vases made of glass and porcelain. After holding cut gerbera 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' in vases made of glass, porcelain, and onggi containing holding solution (tap water or preservative solution), vase life, fresh weight, and water uptake of cut flowers, and total number of microbes in holding solution were collected. In onggi vase, vase life of both the cultivars was longer than the other vases and floral preservative prolonged vase life compared with tap water. Cut gerberas applied with preservative solution in onggi vase maintained their ornamental value for more than 14 days. Cumulative water uptake by cut gerberas was greatest in onggi vase, where 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' absorbed water by 19.2 and 15.8 mL, respectively, for 10 days. Fresh weight of cut flowers in onggi vase was greater than those of the others, and the preservative solution delayed the reduction of fresh weight compared with tap water. Especially, onggi vase with preservative solution maintained 89% of the initial fresh weight at the 8th day of the treatments due to smooth water uptake with comparison with 71% in porcelain. Total number of microbes in the holding solution was smallest in onggi vase. At the 8th day, microbes number in onggi vase was 435 cfu/mL, that was 20-30% level of those of glass and porcelain vases. In conclusion, onggi vase inhibited microbial proliferation in holding solution, maintained water uptake by cut flower, and delayed bending of flower stalks due to vascular blockage, and then prolonged vase life in gerbera. Therefore, onggi with numerous micropores will be a good material for flower vase and preservative solution can improve its function.
The effect of glue plant(Codium fragile) on the Dongchimi fermentation was investigated by measuring physicochemical properties during fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$. Dongchimi was prepared with various levels(0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) of glue plant(Codium fragile). The pH of Dongchimi decreased slowly in all samples during fermentation. Total acidity of Dongchimi increased gradually during fermentation and total acidity of Dongchimi with glue plant(Codium fragile) was higher than that of control. Redox potentials decreased until 30 days of fermentation but increased thereafter. Reducing sugar content increased in the initial stage of the fermentation periods, and then decreased gradually. The reducing sugar content of Dongchimi with glue plant(Codium fragile) was higher than that of control. The content of total vitamin C was much higher in dongchimi with glue plant(Codium fragile). In color measurement, lightness value decreased gradually. However, redness and yellowness values increased gradually during fermentation but decreased thereafter. The content of hot water soluble pectin(HWSP) decreased as the fermentation proceeded, but the content of hydrochloric acid soluble pectin(HClSP) and sodium hexametaphosphate soluble pectin(NaSP) increased.

A numerical model using soil surface energy balance and soil heat flow equations to estimate mulched soil temperature was developed. The required inputs data include weather data, such as global solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed, atmospheric water vapor pressure, the optical properties of mulching material, and soil physical properties. The observed average soil temperature at 50 cm depth was used as the initial value of soil temperature at each depth. Soil temperature was simulated starting at 0 hour at an interval of 10 minutes. The model reliably described the variation of soil temperature with time progress and soil depth. The correlation between the estimated and measured temperature yielded coefficient values of 0.961, 0.966 for 5cm and 10cm depth of the bare soil, respectively, 0.969, 0.965 for the paper mulched soil, and 0.915, 0.938 for the black polyethylene film mulched soil. The percentages of absolute differences less than 2$^{\circ}$C between soil temperatures measured and simulated at 10 minute interval were 97.4% and 98.5% for 5 cm and 10cm for the bare soil, respectively, and 95.8% and 97.4% for the paper mulched soil, and 70.1% and 92.5% for the polyethylene film mulched soil. The results indicated that the model was able to predict the soil temperature fairly well under mulched condition. However, in the night time, the model performance was a little poor as compared with day time due to the difficulty of accurate determination of the atmospheric long wave radiation.
Allura Red (AR) is a water-soluble harmful tar-based food colorant (FD & C Red 40). Batch adsorption studies were performed for the removal of AR using bituminous coal based granular activated carbon as adsorbent by varying the operation parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm. From determined separation factor ($R_L$), adsorption of AR by granular activated carbon could be employed as effective treatment method. Temkin parameter, B was determined to 1.62~3.288 J/mol indicating a physical adsorption process. By estimation of adsorption rate experimental data, the value of intraparticle diffusion rate constant ($k_m$) increased with the increasing adsorption temperature. The adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.16~-6.55 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = + 23.29 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively.

Background and Objectives : Vocal fold bowing is an organic voice disorder that is associated with an abnormal structure of the vocal folds whereas vocal fold polyp is a functional voice disorder caused by an abnormal use of the vocal folds. Both types of vocal folds share a common property in that they make one's voice breathy or strained. The purpose of this study is to compare voice from two types of vocal folds and to offer information of clinical importance. Materials and Method: Vocal fold bowing and vocal fold polyp groups consisted of 7 male subjects, respectively. All subjects recorded /a/ in the state of measuring MPT (maximum phonation time), repeating 3 times, by a voice recorder (48 kHz sampling rate; 24 bit quantization). They answered the questions of K-VHI. Time domain parameters (such as perturbation parameters including HNR, Jitter, etc.) were calculated for the whole duration of /a/ and those of the frequency domain were measured in initial 40 ms and stable 40 ms of /a/, respectively. Mann-Whitney V-test was used for the time domain parameters and K-VHI survey, and Wilcoxon signed rank test was applied to the frequency domain parameters (H1, H2, H1-H2). Results: For K-VHI survey and the time domain analysis, there was no significant difference between bowing and polyp group. For frequency domain analysis, H1 and H2 showed a significantly different result between two groups. Vocal fold bowing group has longer duration and lower intensity than that of vocal fold polyp group in the 'aspirated interval', which could be observable prior to ordinary vowel oscillation. Conclusion: Both groups seem to show breathy voice. This could be referred on the basis of the value of H1-H2. The K-VHI survey says that subjects with vocal fold bowing feel more uncomfortable than subjects with vocal fold polyp.

This study investigated the effect of gamma irradiation (0.5, 1 and 2 kGy) on the microbial and physicochemical changes of apricot at $20^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks. Total aerobic bacteria, yeasts and molds were significantly decreased with increasing dose level. Hunter's color value and hardness were decreased with increment of irradiation dose level. The contents of total sugar and reducing sugar were no significantly changed by irradiation. Hydrogen donating activity was decreased and organic acid and vitamin C contents were increased with elapse of storage periods in all samples. However, there was no significant change by gamma irradiation. Sensory acceptance of irradiated apricots had high acceptability during initial storage period, but it was decreased in comparison to nonirradiated sample with elapse of storage period. These results suggest that gamma irradiation was effective upon microbiological safety and it did not affect antioxidant activity, but not good on color and texture of apricot.

QLF-D system composed with DSLR(digital single-lens reflex) camera, and the images of natural enamel caries and artificial caries was developed from 2 days to 14 days captured by QLF-D system. The correlation between lesion depth of the polarized microscope and luminosity ratio of QLF-D image was analyzed and the results were summarized as follows: 1. The Pearson correlation value between the lesion depth of polarized microscope images and luminosity ratio of QLF-D images was 0.969(p<0.01). 2. From Regression analysis of lesion depth from polarized image by demineralized period, the equation was y = 8.67x - 1.16(p<0.05). 3. From Regression analysis of luminosity ratio from QLF-D image by demineralized period, the equation was y = 3.53x + 6.42(p<0.05). From the results, QLF-D system can detect the enamel caries at the very early stage and can monitor the progression of demineralization and remineralization. For the convenient use of QLF-D system in the laboratory, the image analysing software was needed to analyze of interest site of enamel caries lesion.
For analyzing the direct contamination pathway of radionudides in rice plants, a Solution containing $^{54}Mn,\;^{57}Co,\;^{85}Sr,\;^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$ was applied to the aboveground Parts of the between RI application and harvest. Its highest observed value was 0.94. The fractions of the initial plant deposition that remained in rice plants at harvest were in the range of $19{\sim}47%,\;17{\sim}43%,\;19{\sim}42%,\;23{\sim}61%$ and $11{\sim}69%$ for $^{54}Mn,\;^{57}Co,\;^{85}Sr,\;^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$, respectively, when no decay was assumed. The translocation factors of those radionuclides in hulled seeds were in the range of $6.9{\times}10^{-4}3.8{\times}10^{-2},\;3.6{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-1},\;5.8{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}3.2{\sim}10^{-2},\;1.6{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.6{\times}10^{-3}$ and $3.2{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}2.0{\times}10^{-1}$, respertively, and were highest when they were applied at the stage of active seed development. It was indicated that the remaining percentage and translocation factor would not be greatly affected by the difference in the rain frequency if it is within a factor of 2. These results can be utilzed for predicting the radionuclide concentrations in rice seeds when an accidental deposition of those radionuclides occurs during the rice-growing season.
