Flame propagation speed characteristics of methante-air mixtures were experimentally investigated in combustion chamber modelled engine. Flame propagation process was known as a funtion of equivalence ratio initial pressure and initial temperature. Ion probe and schlieren photograph were applied to measure the local flame speed and flame radius in quiescent mixtures. Pressure was also measured to make sure of the reproducibility and to apply combustion analysis. Burning velocity was calculated from the flame propagation speed and combustion analysis. Flames were developed faster with higher initial pressure and initial temperature but showed maximum propagation speed at equivalence ratio 1.1 regardless of initial pressure and temperature. Local flame speed was maximum values at near midpoint between center and wall.

A cylindrical constant-volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at the spark electrode gap and the combustion characteristics of an inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters such as stratified pattern, initial charge pressure, ignition time and the excess air ratio of the initial charge mixture. Flow characteristics including mean velocity and turbulence intensity were analyzed by a hot-wire anemometer. The combustion pressure development, measured by a piezo-electric pressure transducer, was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. It was found that the mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value around 200-300 ms and then decreased gradually to near-zero value at 3000 ms. For the stratified patterns, the combustion rate under the rich injection (RI) condition was the fastest. Under the initial charge conditions, the second mixture was accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the combustion rate.

A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at spark plug and the combustion characteristics of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times in quiescent mixture. The flow characteristics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity was analyzed by hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer and flame propagation acquired by ICCD camera were used to investigate the effect of initial pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on pressure, combustion duration, flame speed and burning velocity. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value at 200 or 300ms and then decreased to near 0 value gradually after 3 seconds. Combustion duration, flame speed and burning velocity were observed to be promoted with excess air ratio of 1.1, lower initial pressure and ignition time of 300ms.

In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.

In this study, a cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber is used to investigate the flow and combustion characteristics of methane-air homogeneous mixture under various initial charge pressure, excess air ratios and ignition times. The flame and burning speed, mean gas speed are calculated by numerical analysis to analyze the combustion characteristics. It is found that the mean gas velocity during combustion has the maximum value around 300 ms and then decreased gradually on the condition of 10000 ms, and that the combustion duration is shorten and flame speed and burning velocity have the highest value under the conditions of an excess air ratio 1.1, an initial charge pressure of 0.2 MPa and an ignition time of 300 ms in the present study. And, the initial pressure and burning speed are in inverse proportion, so that it is in agreement with Strehlow who presented that the initial pressure and burning speed are in inverse proportion when the burning speed is under 50cm/s.

To clarify the effects of equivalence ratio, initial pressure and temperature on the flame propagation and radicals characteristics, a series of the experimental study were conducted in a quiescent methane-air premixture using a constant volume chamber. The development of the flame was visualized following the start of ignition using high speed schlieren photo and radical images by intensified CCD camera. Combustion pressure and ion current were recorded simultaneously according to the experimental conditions which were equivalence ratio with 0.7 to 1.2, initial pressure with 0.08 MPa to 0.40 MPa and initial premixture temperature with 3l3.2K to 403.2K. The results showed that the flame speed by ion current and mass fraction burned by combustion pressure characterized the effects of flame propagation very well. And increased combustion duration due to lean combustion condition that was below equivalence ratio, 0.8 caused cycle variation and decreasing the power of engine.

The disintegration process of initial spray from high-pressure swirl injector was investigated at different injection pressures. The transient breakup phenomena that were difficult to observe at high injection pressure were easily observed at the low injection pressure of 0.4MPa. The effect of fuel remained inside a nozzle hole volume on the penetration of initial spray was also investigated. The disintegration process of initial spray could be classified four regions: the formation of mushroom shape, the first collision, the second collision, and the development of spray, The liquid film of cup shape was particularly found in the second collision region, and the growth ratio of its length and width at low and high injection pressures were compared.

Combustion phenomenon in scale-downed combustor is investigated. As the combustor volume decreases surface to volume ratio increases. for increased surface to volume ratio means increased heat loss and this increased heat loss affects reaction in combustion chamber. Plastic mini combustor is made. Stoichiometricaly premixed Hydrogen I air gas is used as fuel. Initial chamber pressure and chamber size are varied and the effects are evaluated. Peak pressure decreases with the decrease in chamber height. As initial chamber pressure decreases peak pressure decreases. And this change is more important than scale down effect till the chamber height of 1mm. With this result and further information following the experiments design parameter for micro engine can be established.

This paper presents the effects of initial pressure of mixture on CO, $CO_2$ and NOx emissions in constant volume combustion chamber. The CO, $CO_2,O_2,N_2$ concentrations in the chamber are determined by thermal conductivity detection (Gas-chromatograph) wile the NOx concentration is measured by chemiluminescent detection (NOx Analyser). Methane-air mixture is used as premixed fuel and the measurements are taken with equivalence ratios($\phi$) varing from 0.6 to 1.3, and initial pressures of methane-air mixture varing from 0.1MPa to 0.8MPa in constant volume combustion chamber. The NOx concentration steadily increases with increasing equivalence ratio, peaks in lean flame ($\phi$=0.85~0.9), and then rapidly decreases. However, as the initial pressure of mixture is increased, the equivalence ratio corresponding to the point of peak [NOx] shifts towards leaner conditions. This is caused by a similar shift in the peak [CH], which is caused by the variation with pressure and equivalence ratio of the rate of CH production from $CH_2$ and OH. The maximum combustion pressure peaks at $\phi$ =1.05 and the $CO_2$ concentration peaks at $\phi$=0.95~1.0 while the CO concentration rises sharply at the condition of fuel-rich mixtures. This is caused by complete combustion at $\phi$=0.95.

A comprehensive laboratory investigation of the liquefaction characteristics of Jumunjin standard sand. Seoul sand and Hongsung sand was peformed by the undrained cyclic triaxial compression test under different relative densities, confining pressures and cyclic deviator stresses. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. Liquefaction potential was dominated by the stress ratio at a given number of cycle. That is, the number of cycle required to cause initial liquefaction became samller as the stress ratio increased. 2. Liquefaction potential of a sand was infliuenced by initial relative density or void ratio. Under a given relative density. liquefaction potential of Jumunjin standard sand and Seoul sand was smaller than that of Hongsung sand. 3. The pore pressure ratio of Hongsung sand was the smallest three under a given relative density and stress ratio, and it showed higher value when the cyclic stress and the shear strain were high. 4. An excessive pore pressure ratio not found when initial shear was smaller than 0.01%, and the pore pressure ratio started to increase when initial shear became greater than 0.01%. 5. Soil texture is an important factor to cause liquefaction, and liquefaction potential decreased a the mean grain size decreased. however the sand having fine grain such as Hongsung sand showed somewhat higher liquefaction potential. 6. Based on the analysis of the specimens whose number of the cycles to cause liquefaction was 8~12, it was found that the relationship between density and stress ratio was linear. The curves for Hongsung sand was steeper than the other. 7. From the above results and the method suggested by Seed-Idriss, it may be considered that the damages by Hongsung earthquake was not directly caused by liquefaction.
