Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 from rattlesnakes (rsTRPA1) and boas (bTRPA1) was previously proposed to underlie thermo-sensitive infrared sensing based on transcript enrichment in infrared-sensing neurons and hyper-thermosensitivity expressed in Xenopus oocytes. It is unknown how these TRPA1s show thermosensitivities that overwhelm other thermoreceptors, and why rsTRPA1 is more thermosensitive than bTRPA1. Here, we show that snake TRPA1s differentially require Ca2+ for hyper-thermosensitivity and that predisposition to cytosolic Ca2+ potentiation correlates with superior thermosensitivity. Extracellularly applied Ca2+ upshifted the temperature coefficients (Q10s) of both TRPA1s, for which rsTRPA1, but not bTRPA1, requires cytosolic Ca2+. Intracellular Ca2+ chelation and substitutive mutations of the conserved cytosolic Ca2+-binding domain lowered rsTRPA1 thermosensitivity comparable to that of bTRPA1. Thapsigargin-evoked Ca2+ or calmodulin little affected rsTRPA1 activity or thermosensitivity, implying the importance of precise spatiotemporal action of Ca2+. Remarkably, a single rattlesnake-mimicking substitution in the conserved but presumably dormant cytosolic Ca2+-binding domain of bTRPA1 substantially enhanced thermosensitivity through cytosolic Ca2+ like rsTRPA1, indicating the capability of this single site in the determination of both cytosolic Ca2+ dependence and thermosensitivity. Collectively, these data suggest that Ca2+ is essential for the hyper-thermosensitivity of these TRPA1s, and cytosolic potentiation by permeating Ca2+ may contribute to the natural variation of infrared senses between rattlesnakes and boas.
An attempt to derive the surface temperature from the Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT)-3A mid-wave infrared (MWIR) data acquired over the southern California on Nov. 14, 2015 has been made using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model. Since after the successful launch on March 25, 2015, the KOMPSAT-3A spacecraft and its two payload instruments - the high-resolution multispectral optical sensor and the scanner infrared imaging system (SIIS) - continue to operate properly. SIIS uses the MWIR spectral band of 3.3-5.2 ㎛ for data acquisition. As input data for the realistic simulation of the KOMPSAT-3A SIIS imaging conditions in the MODTRAN model, we used the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, the KOMPSAT-3Asensor response function, the solar and line-of-sight geometry, and the University of Wisconsin emissivity database. The land cover type of the study area includes water, sand, and agricultural (vegetated) land located in the southern California. Results of surface temperature showed the reasonable geographical pattern over water, sand, and agricultural land. It is however worthwhile to note that the surface temperature pattern does not resemble the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance counterpart. This is because MWIR TOA radiances consist of both shortwave (0.2-5 ㎛) and longwave (5-50 ㎛) components and the surface temperature depends solely upon the surface emitted radiance of longwave components. We found in our case that the shortwave surface reflection primarily causes the difference of geographical pattern between surface temperature and TOA radiance. Validation of the surface temperature for this study is practically difficult to perform due to the lack of ground truth data. We therefore made simple comparisons with two datasets over Salton Sea: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) field data and Salton Sea data. The current estimate differs with these datasets by 2.2 K and 1.4 K, respectively, though it seems not possible to quantify factors causing such differences.
To examine the detectability of the yellow sand and/or aerosol from China crossing over the Yellow Sea within the range of OSMI wavelengths(400-900 nm), we have investigated the optical characteristics of aerosols in yellow sand events observed on April, 1998 in Seoul. The spectral reflectance(%) and aerosol optical thickness in the range of Visible(VIS) and near Infrared (NIR) wavelengths were derived from the measurements of solar radiation using the GER-2600 spectroradiometer and sunphotometer during the April, 1798. The average spectral reflectance for the yellow sand events is over 40% and higher around 14:30 than 12:00 LST, but that for clear days is about 20% both at 12:00 and 14:30 LST in the range of 500-900 nm. The aerosol optical thickness at 501 nm varied from 0.25 on very clear day to 1.01 during a so-called "yellow-sand" episode and that for 673 nm varied from 0.14 to 0.92, respectively.

Infrared guided weapons act as threats that greatly degrade the survivability of combat aircraft. Infrared weapons detect and track the target aircraft by sensing the infrared signature radiated from the aircraft fuselage. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the infrared signature and susceptibility of supersonic aircraft according to omni-directional detection angle. Through the numerical analysis, we derived the surface temperature distribution of fuselage and omni-directional infrared signature. Then, we calculated the detection range according to detection angle in consideration of IR sensor's parameters. Using in-house code, the lethal range was calculated by considering the relative velocity between aircraft and IR missile. As a result, the elevational susceptibility is larger than the azimuthal susceptibility, and it means that the aircraft can be attacked in wider area at the elevational situation.

The infrared light is known to be less dependent on background light compared to the visible light, and thus many applications such as remote sensing and image surveillance use the infrared image. Similar to color images, infrared images can also be degraded by hazy weather condition, and consequently the performance of the infrared image-based applications can decrease. Nevertheless, infrared image dehazing has not received significant interest. In this paper, we analyze the characteristic of infrared images, especially near-infrared (NIR) images, and present an NIR dehazing algorithm using the analyzed characteristics. In particular, a machine learning framework is adopted to obtain an accurate transmission map and several post-processing methods are used for further refinement. Experimental results show that the proposed NIR dehazing algorithm outperforms the conventional color image dehazing method for NIR image dehazing.
In Japan for protecting the slides of steep sloped areas covering the face of slopes by sprayed mortar became popular since 1970s. But, these mortar walls are getting older now. In this background, this study aims to find ways to develop a diagnostic technique of these faces of slope without physically contacting or destroying them. In doing so, we have used heat infrared imaging processing method and developed a simulation model to predict the weak portion of the wall. The results revealed that, by following the model vacuum of mortar wall can be detected having thickness up to 15cm.
Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth Orbit in 2008. The meteorological imager (MI) is one of COMS payloads and has 5 spectral channels to monitor meteorological phenomenon around the Korean peninsular intensively and of Asian-side full Earth disk periodically. The MI has on-board radiometric calibration capabilities called 'blackbody calibration' for infrared channels and 'space look' for infrared/visible channels, and radiometric response stability monitoring device called 'albedo monitor' for visible channel. Additionally the MI has on-board function called 'electrical calibration' for the check of imaging path electronics of both infrared and visible channels. The characterization of MI performance is performed to provide the pre-launch radiometric calibration data which will be used for in-orbit radiometric calibration with the on-board calibration outputs. The radiometric calibration of the COMS MI is introduced in the view point of instrument side in terms of in-orbit calibration devices and capabilities as well as the pre-launch calibration activities and expected outputs.
[ 0-3PbTiO_3/P$ ](VDF/TrFE) nanocomposites thin films for passive pyroelectric infrared sensor have been fabricated by two-step spin coating technique. 65 wt% VDF and 35 wt% TrFE was formed to a P(VDF/TrFE) poder Nano size $PbTiO_3$ powder was used. 0-3 connectivity of $PbTiO_3$(VDF/TrFE) composites film is achieved and also observed by SEM photography successfully. The dielectric constant, and pyroelectric coefficient measured and compared with P (VDF/TrFE). A very low dielectric constant (13.48 at 1 kHz) and high enough pyroelectric coefficient (3.101 $nC/cm^2$.k at $50^{circ}C$) neasured. This nanocomposites can be used for a new pyroelectric infrared sensor for better performance.
We propose a Readout Integrated Circuit (ROIC), which applies a fixed current bias sensing method to the input stage in order to simplify the circuit structure and the infrared sensor characteristic control. For the sample-and-hold stage to display and control a signal detected by the infrared sensor using a two-dimensional (2D) focal plane array, a differential delta sampling (DDS) circuit is proposed, which effectively removes the FPN. In addition, the output characteristic is improved to have wider bandwidth and higher gain by applying a two-stage variable gain amplifier (VGA). The output characteristic of the proposed device was 23.91 mV/$^{\circ}C$, and the linearity error rate was less than 0.22%. After checking the performance of the ROIC using HSPICE simulation, the chip was manufactured and measured using the SMIC 0.35 um standard CMOS process to confirm that the simulation results from the actual design are in good agreement with the measurement results.
