In this study, an algorithm to estimate Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) over small cities during nighttime has been developed by using the radiance from artificial light sources in small cities measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor's Day/Night Band (DNB) aboard the Suomi-National Polar Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. The algorithm is based on Beer's extinction law with the light sources from the artificial lights over small cities. AOT is retrieved for cloud-free pixels over individual cities, and cloud-screening was conducted by using the measurements from M-bands of VIIRS at infrared wavelengths. The retrieved nighttime AOT is compared with the aerosol products from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra and Aqua satellites. As a result, the correlation coefficients over individual cities range from around 0.6 and 0.7 between the retrieved nighttime AOT and MODIS AOT with Root-Mean-Squared Difference (RMSD) ranged from 0.14 to 0.18. In addition, sensitivity tests were conducted for the factors affecting the nighttime AOT to estimate the range of uncertainty in the nighttime AOT retrievals. The results of this study indicate that it is promising to infer AOT using the DNB measaurements over small cities in Korea at night. After further development and refinement in the future, the developed retrieval algorithm is expected to produce nighttime aerosol information which is not operationally available over Korea.

Objectives : This study aimed to determine the status of thermal stimulation devices approved in Korea for medical applications over the past 10 years, and based on this, to obtain insight for future thermal treatment in Korean medical institutions. Methods : We searched the item classification list entitled "Regulations on Medical Device Items and Rating by Item" from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Notice No. 2021-24, 2021 (Enforced March 19, 2021; www.mfds.go.kr) for individually licensed heaters using the terms "heat" and "heating". Results : We identified 17 items of thermal stimulation product group, of which 1,308 devices were licensed by February 4, 2022, and 53.2% of them (n=696) were devices with valid permits for distribution in Korea. Among the licensed devices, heating pad systems under/overlay (electric, home use) were approved the most, but combinational stimulator (for medical use, home use; Grade 2) accounted for the highest percentage among the current valid permission. Moxibustion apparatuses were licensed separately for electrical use and non-electrical use, and occupied a low percentage of the total devices. We analyzed 307 devices that were accompanied by technical documents and found that the heat sources were wires in 145 (47.2%), infrared rays in 44 (14.3%) and ultrasonic waves in 42 (13.7%) devices. Most (83.1%) devices were used for pain relief, while other applications included beauty, cancer treatment, maintenance of infant body temperature, and healing fractures. Conclusions : Thermal stimulation devices accounted for about 0.9% of all medical devices, and among them, combinational stimulators and heating pad systems under/overlay had the most valid permits. Thermal stimulation devices using heating wires and infrared rays were the most prevalent, and most were used to relieve pain. In order to develop a range of thermal stimulation devices that can be utilized in Korean medical institutions, it is imperative that they have potential applications beyond pain management, addressing various medical purposes. To achieve this, foundational research is necessary to effectively apply diverse heat sources based on medical objectives.
This study was conducted to develop a portable quality evaluation system of bee-honey by near infrared spectroscopic technique. Two kinds of bee-honeys from acacia and polyflower sources were tested in this study. The system consists of power supply, tungsten-halogen lamp, detector, and optical fiber probe. Performance of the system was analyzed by comparing the prediction accuracy of the laboratory spectrophotometer. Total of 346 spectra was divided into a calibration set and a prediction set. The PLS (Partial Least Squares) models were developed to predict the quality parameters of bee-honeys. Reflectance spectra, moisture contents, ash, invert sugar, sucrose, F/G ratio, HMF(hydroxy methyl furfural), and $C^{12}/C^{13}$ ratio of honeys were measured. The PLS models of the laboratory spectrophotometer showed good relationships between predicted and measured quality parameters of honeys in the wavelength range of 1.100~2.200 nm. The PLS analysis of the portable quality evaluation system showed good relationships between predicted and measured quality parameters of honeys in the wavelength range of 1.100~1.300 nm and 1.400~1.700 nm. The results showed the feasibility of the portable quality evaluation system to determine the quality parameters of bee-honey in the field during harvesting.
In search of the intracluster dusts, we have made a survey of globular clusters (GCs) with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) aboard AKARI, the Japanese infrared space satellite. The GCs are thought to host dust particles that are condensed from the material injected by the cluster asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, attempts to detect dust emission from GCs had not been successful until a significant amount of far-infrared (FIR) emission was detected close to the NGC 7078 center by the ISO observations (Evans et al. 2003). Recent FIR observations by the AKARI (Matsunaga et al. 2008) and the Spitzer Space Telescope (Boyer et al. 2006; Barmpy et al. 2009) reported a tentative detection of the dusts in NGC 5024 and NGC 6341, and also confirmed the previous ISO dust detection from NGC 7078. We have observed 17 selected GCs in four FIS wavebands at 65, 90, 140, and 160 micrometers. Each observation covers about $10'{\times}10'$ area centered at each GC. The resulting images show extended structures and/or blobs around the GCs. The extended structures are very suggestive of the Galactic cirrus, while the blobs around NGC 288 and NGC 4833 seem to be related to the two clusters. In this presentation, we will report four representative cases of our survey results and discuss the properties of newly detected sources.

With advancement of infrared space telescopes during the past decade, infrared wavelength regime has been a focal point to study various properties of galaxies, such as stellar mass, dust contents and dust-hidden star formation with respect to evolution of galaxies. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have emerged as one of the most important features since these features dominate mid-infrared spectra of galaxies. These PAH features provide a great handle to calibrate star formation rates and diagnose ionized states of grains. However, PAH $3.3{\mu}m$ feature has not been studied as much as other PAH features since it is weaker than others and resides outside of Spitzer's capability. Still its calibration and characterization are important since it will be the only PAH feature accessible by JWST for high-z galaxies. AKARI mJy Unbiased Survey of Extragalactic Sources in 5MUSES (AMUSES) intends to take advantage of AKARI's capability of spectroscopy on 2 to 5 ${\mu}m$ to provide an unbiased library of 44 sample galaxies selected from a parent sample of 5MUSES, one of Spitzer legacy projects. For these 3.3mm flux limited sample galaxies whose redshifts range between 0 < z <1, AMUSES will calibrate PAH $3.3{\mu}m$ as a SFR while measuring ratios between PAH features and investigating Bra's potential as a SFR indicator. We present preliminary results of AMUSES.
This study was performed to develop a prototype continuous flow ginseng dryer with which better product quality and lower drying energy consumption could be achieved compared with conventional ginseng dryers. A dryer having both far infrared ray (IR) and heated-air as the drying energy sources was designed and fabricated . Dryer performance was studied by examining energy efficiencies and dryer performance evaluation indices (DPEI) during the drying tests of medium-sized four year ginseng roots with IR radiating plate temperature and drying air temperature in the range of 80-12$0^{\circ}C$ and 22-5$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The DPEI of IR /heated -air combined drying was 1/3 of that of the conventional heated-air drying when ginseng were dried to the same final moisture ratio. When ginsengs were dried for 12 hours in the prototype IR/heated-air combination dryer, a linear relationship was found to exist between final moisture ratio and ginseng temperature. As the drying progressed, drying air temperature inside the dryer was nearly constant but ginseng temperature was drastically increased during the first two hours and gradually increased thereafter until the end of drying. With the prototype Ir/heated-air combination dryer, the drying rate changed little but the energy efficiency increased proportionally when the amount of ginseng to be dried increased. Drying capacity, energy efficiency, and DPEI of the prototype IR/heated-air combination ginseng dryer were estimated to 1.500 roots, 65% and 3.800kJ/kg-water , respectively.

The capnograph system for determining the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood of a patient was developed based on the NDIR(non-dispersive infrared) absorption technology. NDIR gas analyzing method requires an optical absorption chamber and signal processing hardware. In this paper, we have designed and implemented NDIR type $CO_2$ gas chamber in consideration of the time response characteristics and lamp chopping frequency. And we have implemented signal processing hardware using two infrared sources to reduce the thermal background effect. The implemented gas chamber and signal processing hardware were tested in the temperature variation experiment and human expiratory experiment. The results showed that the system could produce a stable output signal and a good $CO_2$ gas concentration curve like a typical capnogram.
UWISH2 (UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for $H_2$) is an unbiased, narrow-band imaging survey of the Galactic plane in the $H_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission line at $2.122{\mu}m$ using the Wide-Field Camera (WFCAM) at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). The survey covers about 150 square degrees of the first Galactic quadrant ($10^{\circ}$ < l < $65^{\circ}$; $-1.3^{\circ}$ < b < $+1.3^{\circ}$). The images have a $5{\sigma}$ detection limit of point sources of K~18 mag and the surface brightness limit is $10^{-19}\;W\;m^{-2}$$arcsec^{-2}$. The survey operation began on 28 July 2009 and has completed on 17 August 2011. We have been studying the supernova remnants (SNRs) in the UWISH2 survey area. Among the known 274 Galactic SNRs, the survey area includes 65 SNRs or 24 percent of the known SNRs. The wide-field and high-quality UWISH2 images allow us to identify both the diffuse extended and compact $H_2$ emission associated with SNRs, which is useful for understanding their physical environment and evolution. The continuum is subtracted from the narrow-band $H_2$ images using the K-band continuum images obtained as part of the UKIDSS GPS (UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey of the Galactic Plane). So far, we have inspected 42 SNRs, and found distinct H2 emission in 14 SNRs. The detection rate is 33%. Some of the SNRs show bright, complex, and interesting structures that have never been reported in previous studies. In this report, we present our identification scheme and preliminary results.
The use of renewable energies has been required to diminish the dependency on fossil fuels. As one of clean energy sources biomass has been extensively studied because various biomass resources necessitated rapid characterization of their chemical and physical properties in an on-line or real-time basis. For such an analysis near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been successfully applied because of its non-invasive and informative characteristics. In this work, the applicability of nonlinear chemometric techniques based on biomass near infrared (NIR) data is evaluated for the rapid prediction of ash/char contents in different types of biomass. The prediction results of various prediction models and the effect of using preprocessing methods for NIR data are compared using six types of biomass NIR data. The results showed that nonlinear prediction models yielded better prediction performance than linear ones. It also turned out that by adopting the use of proper preprocessing methods the performance of prediction of biomass properties improved.
During laser irradiation, mechanically deformed cartilage undergoes a temperature dependent phase transformation resulting in accelerated stress relaxation. Clinically, laser-assisted cartilage reshaping may be used to recreate the underlying cartilaginous framework in structures such as ear, larynx, trachea, and nose. Therefore, research and identification of the biophysical transformations in cartilage accompanying laser heating are valuable to identify critical laser dosimetry and phase transformation of cartilage for many clinical applications. quasi-elastic light scattering was investigated using Ho : YAG laser $(\lambda=2.12{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim450{\mu}s)$ and Nd:YAG Laser $(\lambda=1.32{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim700{\mu}s)$ for heating sources and He : Ne $(\lambda=632.8nm)$ laser, high-power diode pumped laser $(\lambda=532nm)$, and Ti : $Al_2O_3$ femtosecond laser $(\lambda=850nm)$ for light scattering sources. A spectrometer and infrared radiometric sensor were used to monitor the backscattered light spectrum and transient temperature changes from cartilage following laser irradiation. Analysis of the optical, thermal, and quasi-elastic light scattering properties may indicate internal dynamics of proteoglycan movement within the cartilage framework during laser irradiation.
