  • In support of remote sensing applications for monitoring processes of the Earth system, research was conducted to analyze the basic spectral response related to background soil and vegetation cover characteristics in the visible and reflective infrared wavelengths. Surface samples of seven stations were examined. Five soils were from land-field and two soils from tideland areas. The vegetation cover experiment was conducted on seven soil samples with known natural moisture content (%) by weight. To study the effect of vegetation cover, spectral measurements were taken on five or six vegetation cover treatments of the seven soils with 3 replications in air dry conditions. For collecting RS base data, used spectro-radiometer that measures reflection characteristics between 300~1,100nm was used and measured the reflection of vegetation from bean leaves. The relationships were evaluated for both a general soil line and for the individual lines of five soils, under air-dried condition as well as different vegetation cover ratio, through the determination of the line parameters. As vegetation cover ratio in bean leaves increases, features of soil reflectance decrease and those of plant reflectance become more and more apparent. In proportion to vegetation cover rate, near-infrared reflectance increased and visible reflectance decreased. Analysis results are compared to commonly used vegetation indices(RVI and NDVI ).

  • Maize, in Hungary, is the fodder-plant grown in the biggest quantity. It is not only used as a fodder but other products such as iso-sugar are made from it, too. The quality of the fodder and the produce is largely dependent on the composition of the supplied maize to the processing site. The examination of quality parameters besides conventional methods are investigated and measured by NIR spectroscopy on a routine basis. The investigated parameters are the following: water, total protein, starch and oil content. The accuracy and precision of determining these parameters we, apart from the wet chemical methods, influenced by sample preparation to a great extent. One of the main features of this is the sample particle size and its distribution across the sample. The uneven distribution of particle size negatively influences the measurement accuracy, decreases model robustness and prediction ability. With these in mind the aim of our experiment was to investigate the effect of particle size on the accuracy of maize composition determination using reflection measurement setup. In addition, we tested different spectrum transformations, which are suitable for canceling this effect. In our experiment 47 samples were analyzed with three different mesh sizes (1.5mm, 1.8mm and 2mm). The results of our findings are presented here.

  • The infrared reflection coatings with pigment can be used to protect the surfaces of combustible materials exposed to fire. To obtain high reflectivities in the infrared range (0.5-10.mu.m) important to fire, several dielectric pigments, such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and silicon, can be synthesized to polymer coatings. The theoretical analysis shows that the coating design with particles diameter in the 1.5 to 2.5.mu.m range and volume fraction in the 0.1 to 0.2 range is estimated to be optimal. In the analysis of the radiation, the dependent scattering, absorption by polymeric binder, and the internal interface reflection are considered. In addition, the temperature distribution in the semi-transparent coating layer and an opaque substrate (PMMA) is also presented.

  • It was common knowledge in textbooks that images acquired using mid-infrared ray were not suitable for measuring temperature near room temperature. But a recent satellite image using a mid-infrared sensor show the possibility that the result measured using the mid-infrared sensor can also measure the temperature near room temperature. In this paper, the possibility and accuracy of extraction room temperature information from satellite images with mid-infrared sensors are reviewed. The mid-infrared satellite image reviewed in this paper showed the temperature of room temperature well, and regarding the reliability as an absolute value of the measured temperature, the effect of the heat transfer amount due to the direct reflection of sunlight on the surface and the effect of the infrared absorption amount absorbed in the atmosphere can be seen as a relatively small or constant value. However, the problem of uncertainty in the radiation coefficient due to physical properties, which is the limit of the non-contact thermometer, remained a problem to be solved.

  • The aim of this thesis research is to develop equipment measuring refractive state in order to measure the general ocular function using PC-based Foucault Test(Knife Edge Test). The Image of light generated from the reflection of incident light in retina thru Knife Edge Test was photographed using a CCD camera. The resulting image was then analyzed to measure the size of pupil by measuring the diameter of reflected image. The reflection state was judged from the orientation of reflected image and the degree of abnormal reflection was confirmed by measuring the size of second image of reflection. The aberration value was calculated from the magnitude of spherical aberration obtained by comparing the brightness of second reflected image appeared in the opposite direction to the reflected image.

  • In this paper, a design for a radio frequency(RF) and infrared(IR) absorber with metasurfaces is discussed in microwave frequency bands. The RF absorber includes double layers of metasurfaces to operate in S- and X-bands. Effects of sheet resistance of the metasurfaces and thicknesses of dielectric supporting layers on reflection responses are investigated. An IR stealth layer incorporates an array of conductive grids with slits to reflect IR signals but to transmit RF signals and visible rays. Periodicity of the grids and slits is studied for transmission responses in the X-band and a surface area ratio. Reflection responses of the RF/IR multispectral absorber are found to be lower than -10 dB and -16 dB in the S- and X-bands, respectively, from full-wave simulation. Finally, the RF/IR multispectral absorber is fabricated and its reflection responses are measured to verify designed performance.

  • Large-sized multi-touch screen is usually made using infrared rays. That is because it has technical constraints or cost problems to make the screen with the other ways using such as existing resistive overlays, capacitive overlay, or acoustic wave. Using infrared rays to make multi-touch screen is easy, but is likely to have technical limits to be implemented. To make up for these technical problems, two other methods were suggested through Surface project, which is a next generation user-interface concept of Microsoft. One is Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR) which uses infrared cameras, the other is Diffuse Illumination (DI). FTIR and DI are easy to be implemented in large screens and are not influenced by the number of touch points. Although FTIR method has an advantage in detecting touch-points, it also has lots of disadvantages such as screen size limit, quality of the materials, the module for infrared LED arrays, and high consuming power. On the other hand, DI method has difficulty in detecting touch-points because of it's structural problems but makes it possible to solve the problem of FTIR. In this thesis, we study the algorithms for effectively correcting the distort phenomenon of optical lens, and image processing algorithms in order to solve the touch detecting problem of the original DI method. Moreover, we suggest calibration algorithms for improving the accuracy of multi-touch, and a new tracking technique for accurate movement and gesture of the touch device. To verify our approaches, we implemented a table-based multi touch screen.

  • Recently infrared cameras have been widely used to diagnosis degradation status of the power substitution system. At the place of high magnetic field, however, electronic parts of infrared camera take a place problem that is not reasonable working due to high magnetic field. To solve this problem, we may generally use reflector, it has a problem that the performance of reflection degrade caused by flexure of the reflector. In this paper, in order to overcome these problem, technique of design for reflector is proposed to reduce error and to increase measurement efficiency. The reflector is made by coating using aluminum on the acrylic sheet.

  • In this paper, we have extended the research on the infrared sensor which has been limited to the plane. The reflection mechanism of the light on the curved surface is analyzed according to the curvature change and the emitted angle of photodiode and verified through experiments. The difference in the curvature causes a difference in the measurement distance, and also changes the intensity of the light coming into the phototransistor, thereby causing a difference in the output voltage. However, the difference in the output voltage due to the curvature change can be solved by adjusting the emitted angle of the photodiode to minimize the spot area formed on the curved surface regardless of the curvature. Therefore, it is possible to measure the distance by using the infrared sensor regardless of the curvature by aligning the photodiode to the center of the curved surface and adjusting the angle of the photodiode.

  • This paper is a part of developing a software that predicts the infrared signal emitted from a ground object by considering solar irradiation. The radiance emitted from a surface can be calculated by using the temperature and optical characteristics of the surface object. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is defined as the ratio of reflected radiance to incident irradiance. It is a very important surface reflection property that decides the reflected radiance from the object. In this paper, the spectral radiance received by a remote sensor over the mid-wave infrared(MWIR), and the long-wave infrared(LWIR) regions are computed and compared each other for several different materials. The results show that the optical surface properties such as the BRDF and the emissivity of the object surface can play a major role in generating the infrared signatures of various objects, and the largest infrared signal may reach up to 10 times the smallest one when the infrared signals obtained from a flat plate with different surface conditions under the sun light.
