A Time-Constrained Information Processing Model in Ubiquitous Environments

  • As pervasive computing is widely adopted and reliable networks are becoming more easily accessible, there is a rapidly growing need to develop a mechanism to analyze and evaluate the performance of ubiquitous environments. This paper presents an information processing model which characterizes a ubiquitous environment where a variety of pieces of information need to be exchanged among devices within a system. The proposed model not only provides analytical tools to evaluate the performance of devices, but also makes it possible to identify key factors in designing a ubiquitous environment. For illustrative purposes, a test bed is constructed and the performance of the system is assessed based on the proposed model.

A Study on the Effectiveness of Information Retrieval (정보검색효율에 관한 연구)

  • Retrieval effectiveness is the principal criterion for measuring the performance of an information retrieval system. The effectiveness of a retrieval system depends primarily on the extent to which it can retrieve wanted documents without retrieving unwanted ones. So, ultimately, effectiveness is a function of the relevant and nonrelevant documents retrieved. Consequently, 'relevance' of information to the user's request has become one of the most fundamental concept encountered in the theory of information retrieval. Although there is at present no consensus as to how this notion should be defined, relevance has been widely used as a meaningful quantity and an adequate criterion for measures of the evaluation of retrieval effectiveness. The recall and precision among various parameters based on the 'two-by-two' table (or, contingency table) were major considerations in this paper, because it is assumed that recall and precision are sufficient for the measurement of effectiveness. Accordingly, different concepts of 'relevance' and 'pertinence' of documents to user requests and their proper usages were investigated even though the two terms have unfortunately been used rather loosely in the literature. In addition, a number of variables affecting the recall and precision values were discussed. Some conclusions derived from this study are as follows: Any notion of retrieval effectiveness is based on 'relevance' which itself is extremely difficult to define. Recall and precision are valuable concepts in the study of any information retrieval system. They are, however, not the only criteria by which a system may be judged. The recall-precision curve represents the average performance of any given system, and this may vary quite considerably in particular situations. Therefore, it is possible to some extent to vary the indexing policy, the indexing policy, the indexing language, or the search methodology to improve the performance of the system in terms of recall and precision. The 'inverse relationship' between average recall and precision could be accepted as the 'fundamental law of retrieval', and it should certainly be used as an aid to evaluation. Finally, there is a limit to the performance(in terms of effectiveness) achievable by an information retrieval system. That is : "Perfect retrieval is impossible."

Outage Analysis and Optimization for Time Switching-based Two-Way Relaying with Energy Harvesting Relay Node

  • Energy harvesting (EH) and network coding (NC) have emerged as two promising technologies for future wireless networks. In this paper, we combine them together in a single system and then present a time switching-based network coding relaying (TSNCR) protocol for the two-way relay system, where an energy constrained relay harvests energy from the transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals from two sources, and then helps the two-way relay information exchange between the two sources with the consumption of the harvested energy. To evaluate the system performance, we derive an explicit expression of the outage probability for the proposed TSNCR protocol. In order to explore the system performance limit, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability. Since the problem is non-convex and cannot be directly solved, we design a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization algorithm for it. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show that in such an EH two-way relay system, if NC is applied, the system outage probability can be greatly decreased. Moreover, it is shown that the relay position greatly affects the system performance of TSNCR, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the relay is placed in the middle of the two sources. This is the first time to observe such a phenomena in EH two-way relay systems.

  • In this paper, a configuration procedure of a transportation infrastructure system for GNSS based very precise real-time positioning is proposed. This infrastructure system consists of several receiving station, a central station, and communication sub-systems. The required performance, design, implementation and verification of each sub-system are explained respectively. The required performance can be broken down into accuracy, integrity, stability, processing time. The design of the each sub-system is performed in accordance with the required performance and each sub-system is built with regard to the design. Lastly the implemented system is verified in comparison with the required performance.

  • As the Internet facilitates the rapid increase of information availability, the study on SDI service that provides users with relevant document in a timely manner has been developed. However, the practical use of this service has been low. This thesis aims at analyzing the reasons for this and developing relevance feedback based SDI system to improve the performance of the existing SDI system. Experimental systems that are developed for this study are SDI system based on users' minimum intervention feedback, SDI system based on perfect automation feedback, and SDI system based on users' maximum intervention feedback. The fourth system that utilizes the traditional SDI system is also studied to evaluate the level of performance improvement of the newly developed three types of SDI system. As a result of this study, SDI system based on users' maximum intervention feedback showed greatest performance improvement. The next performance improvement happened in order of SDI system based on perfect automation feedback, SDI system based on users' minimum intervention feedback, and the traditional SDI system. Feedback based systems showed greater performance improvement as they went through more feedback processes.

  • In this paper, firstly we describe the structure and the performance of our ICPS(Information Communicaion Processing System) which currently provides information retrieval services, and then make a proposal for the construction of the open-networking information communication infra-structure which enables us to fully pre-pare for the emerging information society. In detail, the structure and the methodology needed for the implementation of the billing function on behalf of all information providers by using the user access network number as a user identification number while guaranteeing the equivalent access to the multiple value-added networks, are suggested. Based on the above ideas, the AICPS(Advanced Information Communication Processing System) has been designed and implemented. Final system performance evaluation with the assumption of a poling system as a system model, shows that our system can handle 10,000 user simultaneously who are using V.34 28.8 kbps modems and the processing capacity is 288,000 packet/sec. This result is so far superior to our target performance established during the desingning procedure. Namely, our system was originally designed to accommodate only 960 users at the same time. By taking advantage of this excessive high performance of our system, many other users can easily access the new services which are accessible only throught the ISDN or the Internet.

  • Under the rapid change of business circumstance to E-business, CRM is one of the major strategic choices to reinforce the relationship with customers. In this point, this study attempts to understand the relationships among the quality of CRM and the variables of post adoption on the innovation diffusion theory. With integration of information system success model and innovation diffusion theory, it developed a research model and several hypotheses focusing on CRM performance of post-adoption. To testify the hypotheses, it conducted a survey on insurance industry and performed a statistical analysis for the research model with structure equation model. The results show that the factors of CRM quality (system, service, and information) have significant relationships with level of CRM usage and satisfaction. And the relationships between satisfaction and CRM performance and between CRM performance and intension of CRM extension are found as statistically significant.

  • This paper aims to establish fundamentals of measuring and evaluating the performance of water-marking systems. We first present the general model of a watermarking method for still images. Based on this model, we propose a statistical method of measuring the performance and robustness of the watermarking system. Then, the DCT-based watermarking system is analyzed and its performance is evaluated by using the proposed method.

Impact of Organizational Culture on the Accounting Information System and Operational Performance of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City

  • This study focuses on determining the impacts of organizational culture on the accounting information system and the operational performance of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City. The paper is organized in five parts: introduction, literature review, research methodology, research results, and conclusion and policy implications. Based on the samples of 353 respondents working in small and mediumsized enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City, the research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to find the answers for research questions. Group discussion, which yields final observed variables of the factors of organizational culture is used for qualitative method. Statistics, assessment of the reliability of Cronbach's Alpha scale, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) are used for quantitative procedure. The results show that mission, involvement and inconsistency in organizational culture positively affect the accounting information system of small and medium-sized firms in Vietnam. In addition, mission, involvement, adaptability and consistency in organizational culture are found to have positive impacts on the firm operational performance. Another finding of the study is that the accounting information system has a positive effect on operational performance of small and medium-sized firms in Vietnam.
