  • In recent years, a large natural disasters have occurred due to worldwide abnormal weather and the amount of damage has been increased more resulting from high density population and a large-sized buildings of the urbanized area. In this study. we estimate the flooded area according to rainfall probability intensify and sea level in Woreong dong, Masan occurred flood damages by typhoon Maemi using SWMM, a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model in urban area, and then analyze the damage of flood expected area through connecting with GIS database. In result, we can predict accurately expected area of inundation according to the rainfall intensity and sea level rise through dividing the study area into sub-area and estimating a flooded area and height using SWMM. We provide also the shelter information available for urban planning and flood risk estimation by landuse in expected flood area. Further research for hazard management system construction linked with web or wireless communication technology expects to increase its application.

  • This study attempted to simulate the flood discharge in the Duman River basin containing Hoeryong City and Musan County of North Korea where were damaged from Typhoon Lionrock on August, 2016. For hydrological modelling remotely sensed datasets were used to estimate watershed properties and hydrologic factors because the basin is ungauged where hydrological observation is not exist or sparse. For validation we applied our methodology and datasets to the Soyanggang Dam basin. It has not only similar shape factor and compactness ratio to those of the target basin but also accurate, adequate, and abundant measurements. The results showed that the flood discharge from Typhoon Lionrock corresponded to three to five years design floods in the Duman River basin. This indicate that the Duman River basin has a high risk of flood in the near future. Finally this study demonstrated that remotely sensed data and geographic information could be utilized to simulate flood discharge in an ungauged watershed.

  • There is always a risk of water disasters due to sudden storms in mountainous regions in Korea, which is more than 70% of the country's land. In this study, a radar-based risk prediction technique for sudden downpour is applied in the mountainous region and is evaluated for its applicability using Mt. Biseul rain radar. Eight local heavy rain events in mountain regions are selected and the information was calculated such as early detection of cumulonimbus convective cells, automatic detection of convective cells, and risk index of detected convective cells using the three-dimensional radar reflectivity, rainfall intensity, and doppler wind speed. As a result, it was possible to confirm the initial detection timing and location of convective cells that may develop as a localized heavy rain, and the magnitude and location of the risk determined according to whether or not vortices were generated. In particular, it was confirmed that the ground rain gauge network has limitations in detecting heavy rains that develop locally in a narrow area. Besides, it is possible to secure a time of at least 10 minutes to a maximum of 65 minutes until the maximum rainfall intensity occurs at the time of obtaining the risk information. Therefore, it would be useful as information to prevent flash flooding disaster and marooned accidents caused by heavy rain in the mountainous area using this technique.

  • Recently, the spatiotemporal patterns of flood disasters have become more complex and unpredictable due to climate change. Flood hazard map including information on flood risk level has been widely used as an unstructured measure against flooding damages. In order to product a high-precision flood hazard map by combination of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, huge digital information such as topography, geology, climate, landuse and various database related to social economic are required. However, in some areas, especially in developing countries, flood hazard mapping is difficult or impossible and its accuracy is insufficient because such data is lacking or inaccessible. Therefore, this study suggests a method to delineate large scale flood-prone area based on topographic factors produced by linear binary classifier and ROC (Receiver Operation Characteristics) using globally-available geographic data such as ASTER or SRTM. We applied the proposed methodology to five different countries: North Korea Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. The results show that model performances on flood area detection ranges from 38% (Bangladesh) to 78% (Thailand). The flood-prone area detection based on the topographical factors has a great advantage in order to easily distinguish the large-scale inundation-potent area using only digital elevation model (DEM) for ungauged watersheds.

  • To compile a flood hazard map it is essential to identify the potential risk areas. A scenario-based numerical modeling approach is commonly used to build a flood hazard map in the case of a levee-break. The model parameters that capture peak discharge, including breach formation and progress, are important in the modeling method. In this study an earth-levee-break model is constructed under the assumption that the failure mechanism and hydraulic processes are identical for all levee-break river activities. Estimation of the hydrograph at the outlet as a function of time is highlighted. The constructed hydrograph can then serve as an upper boundary condition in running the flood routing model downstream, although flood routing is not considered in this study.

  • The amount of rice yield reduction due to inundation should be estimated to analyse economic efficiency of the farmland drainage improvement projects because those projects are generally promoted to mitigate flood inundation damage to rice in Korea. Estimation of rice yield reduction will also provide information on the flood risk performance to farmers. This study presented the relationships between inundated durations and rice yield reduction rates for different rice growth stages from the observed data collected from 1966 to 2000 in Korea, and developed the rice yield reduction estimation model (RYREM). RYREM was applied to the test watershed for estimating the rice yield reduction rates and the amount of expected average annual rice yield reduction by the rainfalls with 48 hours duration, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 years return periods.

  • Flood damage due to torrential rains and typhoons is occurring in many parts of the world. In this paper, we propose a water level prediction model using water level, precipitation, and humidity data, which are key parameters for flood prediction, as input data. Based on the LSTM and GRU models, which have already proven time-series data prediction performance in many research fields, different input datasets were constructed using the ASOS(Automated Synoptic Observing System) data and AWS(Automatic Weather System) data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and performance comparison experiments were conducted. As a result, the best results were obtained when using ASOS data. Through this paper, a performance comparison experiment was conducted according to the input data, and as a future study, it is thought that it can be used as an initial study to develop a system that can make an evacuation decision in advance in connection with the flood risk determination model.

  • Urbanized area has complex terrain with many flow paths. Almost stormwater is drained through pipe network because most area is impervious. And overland flow from the pipe network reform the surface flow. Therefore, it should be considered the drainage system and surface runoff both in urban inundation analysis. It is analyzed by using MIKE FLOOD integrated 1 dimension - 2 dimension model about Incheon Gyo urbanized watershed and compared with the results of 1 dimension model and 2 dimension model. At the result this approach linking of 2 dimension and 1 dimension pipe hydraulic model in MIKE FLOOD give accuracy that offers substantial improvement over earlier approach and more information about inundation such as water dapth, velocity or risk of flood, because it is possible to present storage of overland flow and topographical characteristic of area.

  • Smartphones change the picture of data and information sharing and make it possible to share various real-time flooding data and information. The vulnerability indicators of farmland inundation is needed to calculate the risk of farmland flood based on changeable hydro-meteorological data over time with morphologic characteristics of flood-damaged areas. To find related variables show the vulnerability of farmland inundation using the binary-logit model and correlation analysis and to provide vulnerability indicators were estimated by fuzzy set method. The outputs of vulnerability indicators were compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) for verification. From the result vulnerability indicators are applicable to mobile_based information system of farmland inundation.
