  • As affective barriers to library and information use, library anxiety(Mellon, 1986) has been studied in reference/information services and bibliographic instructions. The paper revisits Mellon's theory of library anxiety and Bostick's(1992) Library Anxiety Scale(LAS) in the digital library environment. In particular, this study attempts to address the inadequacy of the continued applications of LAS in the digital library environment, although the scale has been used unquestionably as the instrument measuring library anxiety. This contention was substantiated by three service trends in digital libraries(i.e., digital reference services, remote access, and transition from bibliographic instructions to information literacy) and by re-analyses of published library anxiety research papers in recent years. This study addresses the need for scale development that could measure anxieties of digital library users. It also suggests Information Literacy Anxiety Scale(ILAS) as a direction for the new scale.

  • The purpose of this study was to study what effect providing the patient with preparatory concrete information had on the state anxiety depending on coping styles of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. State Anxiety scores for 32 patients who had cardiac catheterization were examined after information was provided about the test using an audio tape. The state anxiety of patients who had a high trait anxiety level was compared to that of those who had a low trait anxiety level. The state anxiety of those who had a monitor type were compared to those of patients who had blunter type. The Trait and State Anxiety Scale of Spielberger, Miller's Behavioral Style Scale, and Krantz's Health Opinion Survey and Visual Analog Scale (Ⅰ, Ⅱ) were used. Findings were as follows : 1. Among the demographic characteristics, gender difference of the patients was significantly different for the trait anxiety level. Female patients had higher trait anxiety level than male patients. 2. Analysis of state anxiety scores indicated that the mean score of the state anxiety prior to the test was higher than the mean score of the state anxiety examined after the test. The difference was statistically significant. 3. Among the patients, 14 patients (43. 7%) used monitor type, while 18 patients (56. 3%) used blunter type. The means of preference for information measured on the Krantz' subscale was 2. 45. 4. The study results indicate that the state anxiety level of those who had a low trait anxiety level was lower than that of those who had a high trait anxiety level. 5. State anxiety levels depending upon the kind of coping style which patients used during the test were not significantly different. This study did not identify the influence of preparatory concrete information on the state anxiety depending on coping styles, and there fore a quasi-experimental study using a large sample according to different types of information, and the amount of information, coping styles is recommended.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of information by using cartoon on preoperative anxiety of children following tonsillectomy. The subjects were 30 children aged between 7 and 12 who were hospitalized at C university hospital for undergoing tonsillectomy from December 20, 1996 to August 14, 1997 Sixteen of them were assigned to the experimental group, while fourteen subjects to the control group. The data were collected through preoperative state anxiety, pulse rate, pain before and after giving information by using cartoon. The results were as follows : 1. Preoperative state anxiety increased in both groups (P=0.0348). No significant difference found between experimental and control group. But preopertive anxiety in experimental group was apt to increase less than that in the control group. 2. Pulse rate didn't make significant difference within and between groups. 3. Pain increased in both groups (P=0.0001). No significant difference found between experimental and control group. 4. Experimental group between the aged 7 and 9 decreased preoperative state anxiety, but experimental group between the aged 10 and 12 increased preoperative state anxiety after treatment(P=0.0298). These findings may indicate that the information by using cartoon is effective in children between the aged 7 and 12.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects of information on anxiety, blood pressure and pulse in cerebral angiography clients. Methods: The data were collected from June to November 2014. The participants were 42 (21 each for experimental and control group) patients who to received cerebral angiography. The information developed from researchers' materials for cerebral angiography was provided only to experimental group. Measured variables were anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate. Research tools for anxiety were Spielberger's state anxiety inventory, and 10 point visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: The difference in mean systolic blood pressure after intervention between the experimental group ($129{\pm}15.34$) and the control group ($141{\pm}17.70$) was statistically significant (t=-2.28, p=.028). The differences between the two groups in state anxiety, VAS anxiety, diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate after intervention were not statistically significant (p>.05). Conclusion: The information using educational material was effective in to decreasing systolic blood pressure in patients who received cerebral angiography. Therefore this study material could be used as a nursing intervention for patients in cerebral angiography.

Caregivers in the experimental group participated in the information protocol for 30 min. Both groups were pre-tested before the intervention for two variables, anxiety and nursing needs. The post-test of both groups included anxiety and nursing satisfaction. The instruments used in this study were the Spielberger's state anxiety inventory (1976) and the nursing satisfaction scale developed by Molter (1979). Results: Anxiety scores were significantly lower and nursing satisfaction scores were significantly higher for caregivers in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the research methods, contents, and effects of providing information to alleviate patients' anxiety during outpatient surgery. Methods: The PICOTS-SD (Participants, Interventions, Comparisons, Outcomes, Time, Setting, Study design) was used and 11 randomized controlled trials studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. For assessing the quality of the studies, the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used. Results: In the 11 selected studies, intervention methods included verbal, written paper, video, and websites, and the outcome variable was anxiety. Regarding the effectiveness of providing information on anxiety, the result of the present study was ambivalent. Conclusion: This study showed the current trends in providing information as an intervention. However, randomized controlled trials are further needed in Korea, to verify the effects of such an intervention on patients' anxiety.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine Internet users' psychological anxiety about the possibility of personal information leakage. The investigator examined the difference of psychological anxiety focusing on the possibility of personal information leakage according to the use amount of Internet, the number of joined sites and the frequency of e-commerce transaction. Study findings show that women felt more psychological anxiety than men did. In addition, people who used Internet more frequently felt more psychological anxiety. However, the number of joined sites and the average frequency of e-commerce transaction in a month had no significant influence upon users' psychological anxiety about the possibility of personal information leakage.
