This study is a broad examination researchon LIS students' perception about public library's subject special services and subject special librarian. Students majoring in Library and Information Science as respondents, it examined the recognition level of subject special services and subject special librarian, cognition level of necessity, competencies of subject special librarians and students and opinions on special status system of subject psecial librarians. Main factors shown in the results include the the level of students' understanding and necessity of subject special services and subject special librarian, students' willingness to work as a subject special librarian, the willingness to put additional effort into equip themselves with competencies as subject special librarians. There were respondents who have equipped competencies as subject special librarians through courses provided by the department of Library and Information Science and school curriculum but have not done anything further. Respondents responded that there is a need to systematize special status system of subject special librarian and that subject specialty is important in implementing subject special services but that there is a lack of subject specialty. Based on the research results, this study suggests that there is a need to put more emphasis on developing curriculum that can help overcoming difficulties faced by students majoring in Information Sciecne and help them become competent subject special librarians.

This study aims at developing subject guides for the disabled to provide service effectively. Subject guide and service models are developed on the basis of reference, case study, and user requests analysis and information types in areas are determined. Information types for collecting and building information resources are classified into types are subordinate and also metadata by information types are developed. Subject guides based on customized services contain information, disability type, service target, life-cycle, media type, and organizations.

This study investigated the distribution of subject properties in Korean. Based on the previous studies on so-called 'subjecthood diagnostics' in Korean Multiple Subject Constructions (MSCs), the current study investigates how different subject properties are distributed in single subject constructions (Non-MSCs) and MSCs. Focusing on two distinct subject properties - obligatory control (OC) of PRO and coordinated deletion (CD) - an empirical syntactic experiment was designed to test how these two subjecthood diagnostics behave in the Non-MSC and MSC environments. Seventy Korean native speakers were tested over magnitude estimation task, composed of 80 Korean sentences representing different subject properties in single or multiple subject constructions. Overall results showed (i) both OC and CD can be used as subjecthood diagnostic tests in the Non-MSC environments, but (ii) that only OC can be used as a subjecthood diagnostic test in the MSC environments.

Indexes, especially subject indexes, are major tools for information retrieval. To enhance the retrieval effectiveness of subject indexes, the semantic and syntactic relationships of indexing languages are very important elements. This paper examines the afore-mentioned relationships, based on purely the syntax and semantics of Korean language. The outlines of this study are as follows: 1. The characteristics and usages of controlled vocabularies, particularly subject headings lists and thesaury, are reviewed. 2. The semantic relationships, such as equivalence, hierarchical and associative relationships, are defined, and their categories are investigated in detail. Accordingly, the usages of 'See' and 'See also' references are suggested circumstantially. 3. The syntactic relationships are also examined. Particularly, for the syntactic relationships of multiword indexing terms, two kinds of subject entry formats are compared. Since it is more rational for subject headings organized by the principle of context-dependency, the two-fine entry format is recommended for subject indexes. 4. Computerized production techniques of 'See' and 'See also' reference for the semantic relationships of indexing terms are presented. 5. Computerized production techniques of subject indexes representing the syntactic relationships of indexing terms are also presented.

This study developed the subject guide by policy areas for advancement of policy information service, designed the system for constructing the policy-related resources, and tried to construct policy information resources on a trial basis. For the development and construction of policy areas subject guide, first, we divided the aggregated materials into top 9 types, and subdivided into 19 types. Second, we constructed the policy contents for subject guide service, based on BRM classification system which is functional classification of government. Third, a total of 6,305 were build in accordance with 133 BRM subject guide. As a result, it is said that the effectiveness of the policy subject guide developed by this study, were verified by constructing the experimental data.

With the rapid change of information environment, this study suggests role models and strategies for the university library in Korea based on the subject specialization. A job analysis of subject specialist librarians is an important source providing information about definition of a job, development of a curriculum, administration of human resources, criteria of employee training, and deciding institutional and individual objectives. This study analyzes a job of subject specialist librarians in Korea, and divides their jobs into 7 duties and 58 tasks. the 7 duties are as follows; A. a development of subject information resources, B. a management of information resources classified by subjects, C. a research support service classified by subjects, D. Liasion activity of library users, E. an education of subject classification for library users, F. library management, G. personal development of classified subject areas.

This study aims to find the direction of subject-divisional plan and the change of composition factors in university Library. To confront new information environment, change of service providing environment, academic characteristics of universities. and users' information needs, the collection and service of university libraries are needed to be restructured based on subject-divisional plan. To adopt subject divisional plan effectively. it is necessary to recognize necessity and reasonability of subject - divisional plan by analyzing a change of physical, intellectual, human, and user factors in the libraries from the aspect of subject-divisional plan. That is, the collection and service of university libraries should be reorganized according to the subjects along with such changes as below. First, people came to consider convenience of space and path of building inside more than past. Second, collection becomes constructed and materials are located based on effectiveness rather than logicality. Third, subject oriented service of library became active through developing the subject abilities of librarians. Fourth, users have tendency to visit libraries lot a special subject matter.

The overload of internet information makes user many restrictions. Users are confronted with the problems of information quantities, search, quality and reliability without information needs, technology level, education background of user, when they use internet as a tool of information search and retrieval. Web academic information subject gateway which provides user web information resource of high quality is a solution for these problems. This article explores the characteristics about the establishment and administration of foreign web academic information subject gateway, and identifies the considerations for establishing and managing it.

The library provides its services to satisfy the user's approach. Naturally, the development of library services may determine by considering the satisfaction of users. It traces users' perceptions regarding subject access highlighting problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject. This study has designed to assess users' attitudes towards the retrievals of Bengali documents in OPAC through subject headings. For a collection of data, a representative sample has drawn from a large and heterogeneous population consisting of users in university libraries of West Bengal using a stratified sampling technique. Subsequently, under each of the universities, users' community was stratified into students, research scholars, and faculty members. Under each stratum, the sample selected on a random basis. The users met personally to collect relevant data, while they came to the library and went on to search OPAC. A structured schedule, prepared for the purpose, was presented before library users and consequently, interviews and interpretations recorded systematically. In this manner, several factors have identified concerning subject searching and retrieval performance for Bengali documents. This study explores the access using subject headings in multilingual information retrieval systems. Moreover, the suitability of subject headings for retrieval of Bengali resources has ascertained from the users' point of view. The findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali subject headings to maintain uniformity and consistency.
