  • Tree species-specific estimates with spacebome high-resolution imagery improve estimation of forest biomass which is needed to predict the long term planning for the sustainable forest management(SFM). This paper is a contribution to develop crown distinguishing coniferous species, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis, from QuickBird imagery. The proposed feature analysis derived from shape parameters and first and second-order statistical texture features of the same test area were compared for the two species separation and delineation. As expected, initial studies have shown that both formfactor and compactness shape parameters provided the successful differentiating method between the pine species within the compartment for single crown identification from spaceborne high resolution imagery. Another result revealed that the selected texture parameters - the mean, variance, angular second moment(ASM) - in the infrared band image could produce good subset combination of texture features for representing detailed tree crown outline.

  • For clustering large-scale data, which cannot be loaded into memory entirely, incremental clustering algorithms are very popular. Usually, these algorithms only concern the within-cluster compactness and ignore the between-cluster separation. In this paper, we propose two incremental fuzzy compactness and separation (FCS) clustering algorithms, Single-Pass FCS (SPFCS) and Online FCS (OFCS), based on a fuzzy scatter matrix. Firstly, we introduce two incremental clustering methods called single-pass and online fuzzy C-means algorithms. Then, we combine these two methods separately with the weighted fuzzy C-means algorithm, so that they can be applied to the FCS algorithm. Afterwards, we optimize the within-cluster matrix and betweencluster matrix simultaneously to obtain the minimum within-cluster distance and maximum between-cluster distance. Finally, large-scale datasets can be well clustered within limited memory. We implemented experiments on some artificial datasets and real datasets separately. And experimental results show that, compared with SPFCM and OFCM, our SPFCS and OFCS are more robust to the value of fuzzy index m and noise.

  • In this paper, a comparison of superpixel characteristics based on SLIC(simple linear iterative clustering) for several color feature spaces is presented. Computer vision applications have come to rely increasingly on superpixels in recent years. Superpixel algorithms group pixels into perceptually meaningful atomic regions, which can be used to replace the rigid structure of the pixel grid. A superpixel is consist of pixels with similar features such as luminance, color, textures etc. Thus superpixels are more efficient than pixels in case of large scale image processing. Generally superpixel characteristics are described by uniformity, boundary precision and recall, compactness. However previous methods only generate superpixels a special color space but lack researches on superpixel characteristics. Therefore we present superpixel characteristics based on SLIC as known popular. In this paper, Lab, Luv, LCH, HSV, YIQ and RGB color feature spaces are used. Uniformity, compactness, boundary precision and recall are measured for comparing characteristics of superpixel. For computer simulation, Berkeley image database(BSD300) is used and Lab color space is superior to the others by the experimental results.

  • Selecting locally optimum thresholds, based on optimizing a criterion composed of the area variation rate and the compactness of the segmented shape, is presented. The method is shown to have the shape-resolving property in the subtraction image, so that overlapped objects may be resolved into bright and dark evidences characterizing each object. As an application a vehicle detection algorithm robust to the operating conditions could be realized by applying simple merging rules to the geometrically correlated bright and dark evidences obtained by this local thresholding.

  • In this paper we proposed a new Bragg grating waveguide in order to improve reflectivity and to achieve compactness. Bragg gratings with various thicknesses were engraved in the middle of the core layer with a length of 3 mm. For the sake of cost-effectiveness, the $3^{rd}$ order Bragg grating waveguides were fabricated via conventional photolithography. The maximum reflectivities for the fixed width waveguide of $6{\mu}m$ with the 0.1 and $0.3{\mu}m$-thick Bragg gratings were, -13.14 and -6.25 dB, respectively, and the Bragg wavelengths were 1562.28, 1564.10 nm, respectively. A slight increase in the Bragg grating thickness can result in a remarkable reduction in the length of the Bragg grating waveguide with a fixed reflectivity.

  • It is well understood that force reflecting coupled with visual display can be an important two-way communication channel in human-computer interaction. In this work, important components for a high-fidelity system bandwidth are force reflecting device and that all the computations including contact determination and response computation have to be performed in less than a millisecond. This paper describes a force-reflecting device and an embedded controller. The realized force-reflecting device is based on a novel serial type mechanical structure, and features compactness, high sustained output force capability, low friction, zero backlash, and enough workspace. The embedded controller reduces software computational load via main processor and simplifies hardware strictures by the time-division control. The device is integrated with existing dynamic simulation algorithms running separate workstation, so that objects can be manipulated in real time and the corresponding forces felt back by the operator.
